'Star Trek Into Darkness' Spoilers: What Villain Will Benedict Cucumber Play In The Sequel? By Ian Kar on November 16, 2012 4:15 PM EST (INTERNATIONAL DIGITAL TIMES)

With a trailer and extended preview for "Star Trek Into Darkness" coming out in December, what can we expect from the movie? The 2009 surprise hit, "Star Trek," directed by J.J. Abrams and starring Chris Pine as James T. Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy and John Cho as Sulu, appease both longtime Trekkies and casual moviegoers, and made a new generation of "Star Trek" fanatics. But what exactly will the film focus on?

It's really hard to say. Everyone involved has been extremely tightlipped about the plot of the film, especially Benedict Cumberbatch's role as the villain.

Benedict Cumberbatch, from the Emmy-winning BBC show "Sherlock" (if you haven't seen "Sherlock," watch it on Netflix as soon as you finish this article) will definitely play the villain in "Star Trek Into Darkness" but what exactly is his role? We have no idea, but it probably won't be the "Star Trek" classic, Khan Noonien Singh, from "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn." Many people involved in the movie, from producers to Simon Pegg, who plays Scottie, have adamantly denied the rumors that Cumberbatch will play Khan. They might just be trying to throw us off, but I think that it makes sense that Abrams and co. won't use Khan as their villain in this movie. They're trying to make a unique film, distant from the original "Star Trek" series staring William Shatner, and using Khan in the second movie would be exactly what they did originally.

TOM HIDDLESTON TALKS FRIENDSHIP WITH BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH

Tom Hiddleston has an end of the year interview with GQ UK, in which he talks about Thor 2, his style inspirations, and his friend Benedict Cumberbatch.

When talking about Thor 2 and the increases pressure he feels after the Avengers, he says, “It's mostly self-applied pressure actually. I remember Chris [Hemsworth] and I saying over the summer when Avengers came out, where do we go now? Going into this one we were - very flatteringly - involved in big creative conversations about tone, and story. Thor and Loki are these two characters that people know and love and understand - so we have to take this in the right direction. You want to do something new - you don't want to re-heat the same recipe in the microwave, you want to cook up something different and exciting - but you don't want to lose the things that worked the first time. So we're our own slave drivers, in a way. Complacency is the enemy. But that's exciting and it's going well. I have never seen a group of actors or a crew work harder.”

Rapper gives Dame Judi fresh 'cool' DAVID MICHAEL (STUFF.CO.NZ)

Judi Dench's 15-year-old grandson recently told her that ''Dench'' has been popularised as an expression by London rapper Lethal Bizzle. It means ''cool'', as in ''stay Dench''.

Delighted by the news, she asked her family to give her items of Dench-emblazoned merchandise for Christmas.

At 77 and today nursing a cough that adds a raspy edge to her clipped voice, Dench seems an unlikely hip-hop icon. But there was a time when a film career seemed just as far-fetched.

Sitting in a London hotel room, wearing a sparkly top and jewelled necklace, she is every inch the movie star. But success in Hollywood came late, kicking off after she appeared in her first James Bond film, GoldenEye (1995). Seventeen years on, she is an indispensable part of the Bond franchise.

As M, the head of MI6 and James Bond's boss, she is the longest-serving current cast member. Skyfall, which opens in Australia on Thursday, is her seventh film in the role.

Her character - Dench describes her as ''a woman holding a power job in a man's world'' - has long been an underplayed aspect of the films.

The part was crying to be fleshed out, especially given the actor playing her managed to win an Oscar with just eight minutes' screen time in Shakespeare in Love.

In Skyfall, M finally takes a more central position in the story.

Keira Knightley manages to make a green ball gown casual at LA premiere of Anna Karenina (MR. PAPARAZZI)

With her hands in her pockets, Keira Knightley managed to make the mint green ball gown she wore to the LA premiere of her new film Anna Karenina as casual as wearing a onesie.

Ok so not quite but what the jeepers are pockets even doing on ball gown?!

Posing outside the Arclight Theatre in Los Angeles, Keira Knightley was giving the cameras what they wanted: her polished pout.

Whilst she may know how to work her angles, she recently confessed to Ellen DeGeneres whilst appearing on her show that she hasn’t the foggiest how to go about her wedding to fiancé James Righton. Keria admitted:

Jude Law has offered an update on the status of Sherlock Holmes 3.

The actor confirmed that a script is in development for a sequel to 2011's Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, but no production dates have yet been confirmed.

Matthew Macfadyen: First Pic From BBC America's Jack The Ripper Series, Ripper Street Author: David Wharton (CINEMA BLEND) published: 2012-03-30 15:01:2

It seems like every cable network out there is getting into the business of original programming. Hell, even Netflix is becoming home to several original shows, so it should be no real surprise that nets like BBC America want a piece of the action. BBCA announced last week that they were coming aboard as co-producers of the period drama Ripper Street. As you might suspect, the eight-part series revolves around the infamous Jack the Ripper murders in London's East End. The show is set in 1899, in the aftermath of the Ripper's crime spree, and centers on the detectives of "H Division," who were tasked with solving the murders. Of course, Jack the Ripper was never actually caught, so it will be interesting to see how the show wraps things up...  has posted the first official shot of Ripper Street's cast, which you can see below.

The show stars Matthew Macfadyen (The Three Musketeers), Jerome Flynn (Game of Thrones), and Adam Rothberg (most recently seen in an ep of Alcatraz) as the men of H Division. The show was created by Richard Warlow, who has worked on British series such as Waking the Dead and Mistresses.

Tom Hiddleston To Play British Porn God Paul Raymond In Biopic comments published: 2012-06-19 09:01:31 Author: Sean O'Connell (CINEMA BLEND)

America has Hugh Hefner and (shudder) Larry Flynt. But when it came to soft-core publications, the Brits often turned to Paul Raymond, publisher of such skin magazines as Men Only, Escort, Club International and Mayfair. Though he passed away in March 2008, Raymond’s relatives have been fighting to tell the man’s story on film – and running into various obstacles. One might have cleared, though, now that Avengers and War Horse star Tom Hiddleston has agreed to play Raymond on screen in a planned biopic.

The news is part of a blind item in the UK Daily Mail (which means we should take it with a grain of salt), but Raymond’s own son, Howard, confirms that Hiddleston has agreed to play the main part in the film. The biopic will be based on the book The King of Soho, a nickname Raymond acquired because of all the property he snatched up in the ritzy London neighborhood.

‘We’ve waited a long time to get the right person and in Tom we finally have. It’s a difficult role, not because he is playing my father but because he is in every scene in the film,” Howard Raymond says. “We have a great script and some time in the next year we will be going into production.”

Tom Hiddleston Would Be Game For A Role In Star Wars Episode VII (CINEMA BLEND)

published: 2012-11-15 12:39:36 Author: Kristy Puchko

English actor Tom Hiddleston broke through stateside as deceitful half-brother and full-on villain Loki in 2011's Thor, but despite playing a baddie there and in the blockbuster follow-up The Avengers, Hiddleston has become a fan favorite. So it's little surprise someone thought to ask him if he might consider getting involved in another Disney property: namely Star Wars Episode VII. And while big name directors have been falling all over themselves to publicly state their disinterest in helming the project, Hiddleston confesses he'd be interested in a role.

Speaking with Digital Spy, Hiddleston describes himself as a "huge fan, especially of the first three" when asked if he'd ever consider taking a part of the already iconic franchise. He confesses, the idea hadn't yet occurred to him but then replied:

"Absolutely, yeah. It would depend on the story and the character and things, but I don't know. Maybe people would associate me too closely with Loki - I hope not."

Martha Thomases: Judi Dench Is Not A Bond Girl (COMIC MIX)

Like so much of the world, I went to see Skyfall this weekend. I went with my friend Karen, who hadn’t seen a James Bond movie in a few decades. We both had a fantastic time, and if you haven’t already gone and you like action movies, you should go, right now. This column will still be here when you get back. And, if you can’t go right this second, I shall do my best to avoid spoilers.

There are all kinds of reasons to enjoy this movie: Daniel Craig is a terrific Bond; the locations are exotic and beautiful; the set pieces, including the opening scene and the fight in the glass building, are inventive and exciting; the cinematography is glorious.

For the purposes of this column, I want to talk about a feminist reason to like it: M. Or rather, Judi Dench. Dame Judi is 78 years old, and, in this movie, she looks it. Her hair is gray, almost white. Her face is wrinkled. Her body, at least as it appears in the wardrobe assigned to her, is slack.

None of this makes any difference, because she is not a “Bond girl.” She is M. She is the head of MI6, and she is determined to do the best possible job she can. Her dedication is to her mission and her country.

Because this is a James Bond movie, the emphasis is on her relationship with James Bond. However, this relationship, while cordial, is never less than professional, even when both of their lives are at stake. And it is the most compelling relationship in the whole movie.

Domhnall Gleeson, 'Anna Karenina' Star, On The Worst Thing For An Actor (HUFF POST)

Christopher Rosen Become a fan
Christopher.Rosen@huffingtonpost.com

Gleeson is having a bit of a moment. The erstwhile Bill Weasley in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" plays the big-hearted Konstantin Levin in "Anna Karenina," Joe Wright's ambitious adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's classic novel.

"I would have never considered myself for a romantic role, that was something Joe decided I was able to do," Gleeson told HuffPost during a recent interview. "He made a big step forward for me in that way, just by trusting me."

Gleeson, 29, has been working as an actor since he was a teenager, but it's only now that he's ready to ascend up the ranks. In addition to "Anna Karenina," Gleeson's next run of movies find him starring opposite Rachel McAdams (in the time-travel romance "About Time"), Michael Fassbender (in the comedy "Frank") and even his father, actor Brendan Gleeson (in the star-studded drama "Cavalry").

HuffPost Entertainment chatted with Gleeson about "Anna Karenina" and his burgeoning career.

How did you get involved with "Anna Karenina"?
I came onboard after somebody else dropped out. I had auditioned for a small part in "Hanna" for Joe, but didn't get it. So we kept in touch, because he's just sort of one of those guys. He said, "Do you want to come and audition?" I couldn't believe that he was letting me audition for it at all. I read the book in four days and went down to meet him and did a five-hour audition. I left the audition thinking, "Well, even if it doesn't happen, I feel like I've gotten better by having him direct me for a few hours." Then I did a table read, and after that, Joe asked me to do the part. I did a little dance in the street. It was one of the great moments.

Tom Hiddleston Is So Dreamy We’d Listen To Him Talk About Anything, Even His Favorite Drink 1 day ago by Natalie Zutter (CRUSHABLE)

You know that phrase, you’d listen to so-and-so reading from a telephone book? I didn’t appreciate the truth of it before I started crushing on Tom Hiddleston. To be fair, at first I figured that this was typical celebrity worship where there was at least some substance. Like, my friends would send me GIFs of him being some mix of adorable, sexy, and crazy. Or I’d check out his twitpics from the Avengers set and be swept away by show sensitive he seems to fans’ needs. Like I said, usually he does something to merit me squeeing.

GQ UK caught up with him in London where he’s promoting the Jameson-Empire Done In Sixty Seconds short film competition. Tom is an “ambassador” for the festival, natch, and is part of the BFC Menswear Committee. Swanky, swanky. He’s also been shooting Thor: The Dark World in Iceland and elsewhere, which warms my heart to see him so busy.

Keira Knightley - Keira Knightley has seen a ghost 14 November 2012 (CONTACT MUSIC)

Keira Knightley once found a ghost in her hotel room.

The 27-year-old actress has never believed in the supernatural, but thinks that can be the only explanation for the encounter she had with a mystery man who ''disappeared'' in front of her eyes.

She told TV talk show host Jay Leno: ''I was staying in a hotel in this city [Los Angeles]. The room had a bedroom and a sitting room. I walked into the sitting room. I'd just got out of the shower. There was a guy sitting on the sofa.

''He had a burgundy shirt on and he had short black hair and I thought 'Oh some guy has come into my room.' I said to him 'I'm really sorry, you're in my room,' and he disappeared.

''Then my mum came in and was like 'Who are you talking to?' and I'm standing there.

'I don't think I'd been drinking, it was early in the morning so I can't figure out what it was other than a ghost. He was so real, then all of a sudden he wasn't there.''

Dan Stevens: Theater Review: ‘The Heiress’ The rich and poor: bleak and empty By Judd Hollander (EPOCH TIMES)

NEW YORK—Watching the very gripping Broadway revival of Ruth and Augustus Goetz’s 1947 work “The Heiress,” one cannot help seeing the fatalistic resignation most of the characters carry in this story.

Based on a novel by Henry James, the play mixes family dysfunction with a debilitating cynicism.

Catherine Sloper (Jessica Chastain) lives in a Washington Square town house in 1850 New York City with her father, Dr. Austin Sloper (David Strathairn). She is a terribly shy, plain-looking girl who would rather stay home embroidering instead of going out to dances or other social functions.

Also currently living with the Slopers is the Doctor’s widowed sister Lavinia (Judith Ivey).

Catherine’s relationship with her father is somewhat strained. He often treats her in a condescending manner, having little faith in his daughter’s ability to make her own way in the world.

Catherine’s only advantage, as he sees it, is her somewhat considerable inheritance, which also makes her a potential target for fortune hunters.

This danger becomes more than a possibility when Catherine meets Morris Townsend (Dan Stevens), a handsome but poor man, who quickly falls in love with the future heiress.

Chastain paints a compelling and complex portrayal of Catherine, taking the character from an awkward young woman to one who has her illusions shattered more than once. In the end she becomes just as empty as many of those around her.

Stevens does an excellent job as Morris, a charmer and probable cad. Yet over the course of the play, he begins to develop an obvious attraction toward Catherine, much of it coming from lonely desperation. He needs the security she offers and perhaps also realizes her beauty within.

It’s a testament to Stevens’s acting skill and Moisés Kaufman’s direction that the character of Morris is so believable during his final scenes.

Colin Firth: I'd do opera with Diaz (FILM NEWS)

(Cover) - EN Movies - Colin Firth has joked he wants to appear in a Wagner opera with Cameron Diaz.

The pair had a blast making crime caper Gambit, with Colin playing an art curator who seeks revenge on his boss with the help of Cameron’s eccentric rodeo champion character.

While they enjoyed testing out their comic chops for the film, Colin has suggested they look for something rather more serious. He would like the pair to show off their singing skills and star in one of German composer Richard Wagner’s musical dramas for their next collaboration.

“Yes, I would love to work with Cameron again,” Colin told UK TV show Daybreak. “Let’s not be funny next time… We could appear in a Wagner opera.”

Cameron appeared to be enthusiastic about his idea, replying, “OK, yes, we can just be dramatic.”

Here Are the Theaters Showing The Hobbit at 48fps By Bryant Frazer (STUDIO DAILY)

In case you missed it, the Los Angeles Times reported last week that The Hobbit will screen at its native 48fps projection rate in only about 450 North American movie theaters — probably a little more than 10 percent of the screens the film will eventually be booked on in the U.S. and Canada.

For those who like to plan in advance, the film's official website has posted a list of theaters that are booked to screen the film in what is now known as "HFR 3D." The "HFR" stands for high-frame-rate, of course, and the HFR version of The Hobbit will only be screened in 3D. It's not quite clear if this list is exhaustive. We count 385 U.S. theaters and another 49 in Canada for a total of 434. It's possible that more could convert before the film's December 14 (or midnight December 13, depending on how you look at it) opening.

Kenneth Branagh to play Macbeth among church-goers Manchester festival has honour of actor's first Shakespeare role in 10 years in 'immersive' staging within deconsecrated church (THE GUARDIAN)

Sir Kenneth Branagh performs the lead in Richard III at the Crucible in Sheffield in 2002. Photograph: Tristram Kenton

Unless you count his performance of "the isle is full of noises" speech from The Tempest at the Olympics opening ceremony, it has been a decade since Kenneth Branagh played a Shakespeare role on the stage: that was Richard III at the Crucible in Sheffield.

Next year, however, the actor is to take on one of the most testing parts in the repertoire: Macbeth. And he will do it in the intimate circumstances of a deconsecrated church in Manchester, to an audience of not more than 300 at a time. According to Alex Poots, the director of the Manchester international festival: "It will certainly not be the audience observing the action from a distance, behind the proscenium arch. They'll feel very involved. It will be an immersive experience."

The festival, said Poots, had tempted Branagh through its experience of making work in unconventional spaces and unexpected ways, citing two projects conceived for the 2009 festival: the architect Zaha Hadid designed a pavilion specially for performances of Bach, and It Felt Like A Kiss, a dystopian vision of America, was performed in a derelict office block by theatre company Punchdrunk and documentary maker Adam Curtis.

Rob Ashford, behind acclaimed productions of Anna Christie and A Streetcar Named Desire at London's Donmar Warehouse, is to co-direct Macbeth, along with Branagh, who was knighted this month. In fact intimacy might be regarded as a keynote of the first shows announced for the 2013 festival, which runs from 4 to 21 July.

Henry Cavill:"As a comic book fan, Superman is like the Rosetta Stone of all superheroes," Snyder says. (IFC)

“Man of Steel” is a “more serious version of Superman,” says Zack Snyder

“Man of Steel” might be coming out next year, but there’s little that we actually know about the movie. We know it stars Henry Cavill as Superman and are pretty sure it stars Michael Shannon as Zod, though director Zack Snyder has been coy about that casting in the past. We also know it had the help of Christopher Nolan, so it likely should have the same tone as his “The Dark Knight” trilogy. But beyond that, we’re at a loss.

The only time we’ve seen official footage from the movie was in the two teaser trailers released back in July, and they didn’t show us much. We’re likely due for a full theatrical trailer over the next couple of months, but for now we just need to take Snyder’s word that this is a movie we should all be dying to see.

“It’s a more serious version of Superman,” he said. “It’s not like a heart attack. We took the mythology seriously. We take him as a character seriously. I believe the movie would appeal to anyone. I think that you’re going to see a Superman you’ve never seen before. We approached it as though no other films had been made. He’s the king-daddy.”

Jon Hamm And Daniel Radcliffe Bathe Together In New Trailer For British Miniseries Christina Austin (BUSINESS INSIDER)

At first glance, the new trailer for British miniseries "A Young Doctor's Notebook" looks like a parody skit out of "Saturday Night Live." The opening scene of the trailer shows "Harry Potter" star Daniel Radcliffe and "Mad Men" actor Jon Hamm in a small bathtub together, with Radcliffe asking Hamm to pass him the loofa. The miniseries, based on a short story collection by Russian playwright Mikhail Bulgakov, takes place in a small Russian village in early 1917 during the dawn of the Russian Revolution.

Montgomery sees Judi Dench’s star turn in ‘Philomena’ (WASHINGTON POST) By St. John Barned-Smith | The Gazette, Published: November 12

The British have come to Montgomery County, and this time they’ve brought their cameras.

British Broadcasting Corp. film crews were on hand in Poolesville and Potomac this week filming “Philomena,” directed by Stephen Frears and starring British actors Dame Judi Dench and Steve Coogan.

The movie, based on a true story, tells the tale of an unmarried Irish woman who gives birth to a son, Anthony, in 1952. According to Martin Sixsmith, who wrote the book the movie is based on, Catholic nuns “whisked away” the baby and sold it to an American couple. Philomena spent decades trying to find the son, who was renamed Michael Hess and served as chief legal counsel to former president George H.W. Bush.

The BBC spent two days filming scenes in St. Paul’s Community Church on Sugarland Road in Poolesville.

Caroline Taylor, a consultant who helped the church coordinate with the film producers, said, “I thought it might be Cable Montgomery,” when she first heard a film company wanted to use the site in a movie. She said she thought that perhaps the church, which has a rich history as the center of a freed slave community whose descendants still live nearby, would be part of a documentary.

Then she heard it was the BBC, and thought, “Holy cow, they’re making a full motion picture,” she said.

For the filming in Poolesville, the crew had to transform the historically Protestant St. Paul’s church into Catholic St. Anthony’s.

Gaithersburg resident Gwen Hebron Reese, trustee of St. Paul’s and an extra in the movie, said that she didn’t realize how big a production the whole thing would be at first.

“I’d heard of [Judi Dench], but I’m not a movie person. … I’m more of a book person,” said Reese, who grew up in Poolesville and now lives in Gaithersburg.

Alan Rickman - Alan Rickman not bothered about going nude 13 November 2012 (CONTACT MUSIC)

(I forgot from whom I stole this image, so if it's yours, or you know, please post the credit and the link in the comments.  I apologize.  I just thought it was terrific)

Alan, 66, joked about the experience, telling the Daily Star newspaper: ''Sometimes you can get costumes you can't bear wearing. So it was a relief not to have to say, 'I don't like this costume.'''

The film - a remake about an art curator who takes revenge on his boss by selling him a fake Monet painting - also stars Cameron Diaz and Colin Firth, and Michael added the latter had the film crew in stitches with his unintentionally hilarious behaviour on set.

He said: ''Colin is more unintentionally funny. Cameron you're always laughing along with. Sometimes with Colin you get to laugh at him.''

Speaking about a scene with a real-live lion, he added: ''The stuff that always made me laugh was the lion, who was at times more interested in the art on the wall than he was in Colin. That was a little embarrassing for Colin because he was supposed to be under threat from this lion and it was literally looking at these pictures behind him.''

'Gambit', with a screenplay by Joel and Ethan Cohen, is in cinemas now.

Michelle is Obarmy about ITV's Downton Abbey First Lady pleads for DVDs before official launch (THE SUN)

Exclusive By COLIN ROBERTSON Published: 11 hrs ago

FIRST Lady Michelle Obama is so obsessed with Downton Abbey she begged ITV chiefs to send over the third series ahead of its official US launch date, it was revealed yesterday.

President Barack is also a fan of the Brit costume drama and the couple could not wait until January 6, when the new episodes air in the United States.

So his wife pulled a few strings — and now the Obamas can cuddle up on the White House couch and catch up with UK viewers.

A source on the hit ITV1 show said: “We know it’s very popular in America as it’s so quintessentially British. We’d heard the Obamas liked to watch it but we were very surprised when someone from the First Lady’s office got in touch asking for the series.

New Bridget Jones Novel for 2013! (FEMALE FIRST)

Jonathan Cape has acquired the new Bridget Jones novel by Helen Fielding. The novel explores a different phase in Bridget’s life and will be published in Autumn 2013.  The first two Bridget Jones novels were huge international bestsellers, published in forty countries and selling over 15 million copies worldwide.

Richard Cable, Managing Director of Vintage Publishing (a Random House Group Company), acquired UK and Commonwealth rights on sole submission from Gillon Aitken of Aitken Alexander Associates. Jonathan Cape will publish in Autumn 2013. Vintage will publish the novel in paperback in 2014.

Dan Franklin, Publisher of Jonathan Cape, said: ‘Great comic writers are as rare as hen’s teeth. Helen is one of a very select band who have created a character, Bridget, of whom the very thought makes you smile. Like millions of others I can’t wait to see what’s happened to her.’

ANNA KARENINA REVIEW (CINEMA BLEND)

Reviewed By: Katey Rich
movie reviewed rating

The film's biggest innovation is to set the entire story within a decaying old theater, a very literal translation of the prying eyes and strict rules of late 19th century Russian high society, where the upper class was so pretentious they spoke French amongst themselves. Wright uses the theater to stage all kinds of improbable scenes-- a horse race, an intimate bedroom encounter-- and occasionally lets us witness the stunning set changes, a choreography of actors and camera that rivals all the celebrated long takes in Wright's previous films. Characters sit among the footlights when they want to be alone, chatter up in the opera boxes to gossip-- but they are always trapped in this dilapidated theater, with no awareness that the world might change around them.

The one exception to this is Levin (Domnhall Gleeson), a farmer who only begrudgingly visits high society but who falls hard for a young girl (Alicia Vikander) who initially rejects him. Early on Levin pushes open the back door of the stage to walk into a snowy field, a simple but stunning photography trick that sets up a fascinating contrast between "real" and artificial spaces (in a film where, of course, everything is fictional). As Anna (Knightley) begins her torturous affair with the young, caddish Vronsky (Aaron Taylor Johnson) they frolic among real hedges and in fields of flowers, but they inexorably return to the theater, where gossips make their lives impossible. And even when Anna visits the frigid bedroom she shares with her stern husband (a marvelous Jude Law), the bedchamber can open up to the wings of the stage without warning. Love-- for a wife or husband, for a child, for an illicit affair-- is real in this story; it's the world itself that can constantly shift and redefine everything.

Tom Stoppard's fluid, very streamlined adaptation makes Anna Karenina a series of love stories, with the politics left to the fringes for curious viewers. The focus on Levin and Kitty's slow courtship contrasts beautifully with Anna and Vronsky's fevered affair, and though the martial fracture between Oblonsky and Dolly is one of the film's quieter notes, they're played so beautifully by Matthew MacFadyen and Kelly MacDonald that they feel essential as well. Wright is famous for working with the same technical team on every film, and all the elements of production here-- from Dario Marianelli's propulsive score to Jacqueline Durran's bravura costumes to Seamus McGarvey's sharp cinematography-- synch up so perfectly that the movie sweeps you along like the train on one of Anna's immense dresses. Anna Karenina is a massive, boldly imagined work, the rare novel adaptation that's purely, thrillingly cinematic.
