‘Downton Abbey’ season 4 notes: Allen Leech, Tom Cullen, and a dog

Isis

3 August, 2013

Allen’s feud with the dog – It has been a while since we have done a formal “Downton Abbey” notes article, but why not start off with something that we simply find hilarious? Sometimes, watching a Twitter feud can be ridiculously entertaining, especially when things start to really go haywire and you can begin to compare it to a verbal beatdown.

This one, mind you, is a little bit unfair … mostly because of the targets that we are referring to here is a dog, and the one made famous on “Downton Abbey,” no less. Allen Leech has been having quite a bit of fun with this four-legged friend as of late, giving us viewers a chance to feel as close to the series as possible without really spoiling much of anything in the process. Not only did he share this photo on his Twitter account, but he included the following caption to go along with it:

“Now this is a step too far. That is MY top hat… #isis #diva gloves and hats are off!”

David Beckham Offered Movie Role by Colin Firth

Colin Firth asks David Beckham to take a cameo role in new movie 'The Secret Service' as a villain.

3 AUGUST, 2013

David Beckham has been approached to play a bad guy in a new movie.

The retired soccer star - who announced he was quitting the sport earlier this year - has been asked by Colin Firth to star in 'The Secret Service' and director Matthew Vaughn is so confident he will agree to appear, he has already had a villainous part written for him.

A source told The Sun newspaper: "Becks was asked by Colin Firth if he'd like to be in the movie but he is yet to fully commit. He loves movies and fancies appearing on the big screen -- but just as a one-off, not a full-time career.

The film - which is based on a spy graphic novel by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons - stars Colin and Sir Michael Caine as superagents fighting a team of villains headed by Samuel L. Jackson and will also feature cameo appearances from stars including Sir Elton John.

J.K. Rowling lawyer pays for outing her

JK Rowling
J.K. Rowling's donated royalties from The Cuckoo's Calling to The Soldiers' Charity

THE AGE
1 AUGUST, 2013

Author JK Rowling has accepted a substantial donation to charity from a law firm which breached her confidentiality by revealing she was writing under a pseudonym.

Harry Potter's creator brought proceedings in London's High Court against Chris Gossage, a partner at Russells and a friend of his, Judith Callegari.

Her solicitor, Jenny Afia, told Justice Tugendhat that Rowling was revealed in the Sunday Times as the writer of crime novel The Cuckoo's Calling, which was published under the name of Robert Galbraith.

A few days later, Russells contacted her agent disclosing that it was Gossage who had divulged the confidential information to Callegari, who then communicated it in the course of a Twitter exchange with a journalist.

Afia said that Rowling, who was not in court, "has been left dismayed and distressed by such a fundamental betrayal of trust".

Gossage, Callegari and Russells all apologised, with the firm agreeing to reimburse Rowling's legal costs and make a payment, by way of damages, to the the Soldiers' Charity, formerly the Army Benevolent Fund.

Afterwards a statement issued on the author's behalf said that all global net royalties which would otherwise have been paid to her from book sales of The Cuckoo's Calling would be donated to The Soldiers' Charity for a period of three years, dating from July 14 - the day that Galbraith's identity was made known.

She said: "This donation is being made to The Soldiers' Charity partly as a thank you to the Army people who helped me with research. But also because writing a hero who is a veteran has given me an even greater appreciation and understanding of exactly how much this charity does for ex-servicemen and their families and how much that support is needed.

King Kong actress Naomi Watts was so determined to portray Diana, Princess of Wales accurately that she stayed in character even off camera, her co-star has revealed.

Canadian star Cas Anvar plays Diana's boyfriend Dodi Fayed in the movie about the last two years of her life and he has revealed that making the film was an intense experience.

"I had heard about Naomi before, that she was part British and part Australian, and I was expecting a little bit of banter but she was so in character even when we weren't shooting.

"She was so poised and gracious and in control in the same way Diana was always in control. That was actually a very powerful energy as the other actor and it helped me interact with her."

Sherlock, his crippling insecurities and the mystery of why Benedict Cumberbatch can't find a wife despite being Britain's latest superstar

Benedict Cumberbatch and a mysterious woman as they leave Cirque Le Soir Night club at 3am in the morning

By CHRISTOPHER STEVENS
PUBLISHED: 16:59 EST, 2 August 2013 | UPDATED: 03:18 EST, 3 August 2013

He’s a mass of insecurities — defensive about his schooling, constantly seeking approval, afraid to turn work down and filled with self-reproach over his failure to find a wife and have children.
Yet at 37, Benedict Cumberbatch is Britain’s newest global star, a sex symbol who can command multi-million dollar fees from the world’s top film-makers.

So why, with the world at his feet, is the Sherlock actor so desperately unsure of himself? And is his debilitating self-doubt in danger of derailing his progress to career superstardom — and his own personal happiness? Could it be that, in the past, his emotional intensity and his urgent yearning to become a father have scuppered relationships?

Women — especially the independent, career-minded women he finds attractive — seem to be
 scared off by him.

His see-sawing temperament is enough to deter any woman from marriage. To make matters worse, he’s highly cautious, even paranoid, about money.

Now he is hotly tipped for an Oscar in a movie no one has even seen yet, playing Wikileaks mastermind Julian Assange in The Fifth Estate.

In recent weeks he has sent the gossip columns into overdrive, after being photographed with two glamorous and very different women, leaving nightclubs in the small hours, officiating at a gay wedding and camping it up wildly as he revealed his crush on Hollywood A-lister Matt Damon. ‘Do you have Matt’s number?’ he demanded to a baffled interviewer for a web fansite. ‘My biggest wish is to hang out with him .

He is a high-intensity boyfriend. He once cited his father’s tradition of presenting his mother with a red rose every Monday morning as the epitome of romance. But what might be endearing for a long-married couple is apt to come across as needy, even creepy, in a new relationship.

He is also ferociously chivalrous, old-fashioned even. After BBC radio’s film reviewer Mark Kermode poked fun at Keira Knightley, Cumberbatch — her co-star in Atonement — punched the critic when they appeared together on air. Kermode was amazed, though he later insisted it was ‘a light tap on the arm’ and ‘playful’.

More recently, Cumberbatch has dated furniture designer Anna Jones, before apparently rekindling an old friendship with Russian model and actress Katia Elizarova.

Benedict Cumberbatch on holiday with Russian model, Katia Elizarova

Last month, the pair were photographed snuggling on a sun-lounger beside a pool at Ibiza’s Hotel Hacienda. She is wearing next to nothing, and he strokes her arm as she nuzzles his face with her blonde hair.

But Katia was apparently as surprised as anyone when Cumberbatch was snapped days later leaving his birthday party at the saucy London nightclub Cirque du Soir, which features fire-eaters and topless dancers, with red-haired actress Charlotte Asprey on his arm. She is another friend from theatre school days.

He once auditioned for a PlayStation version of James Bond, in a bow tie and tuxedo, but was rejected.

The stress made him ill. He tried to stay fit with Bikram yoga and a daily spoonful of organic honey, but succumbed first to glandular fever, then pneumonia.

It didn’t help that he was smoking heavily. On a bad day, it took half a dozen cigarettes and a drink before he could even face talking to an interviewer.

Then, at 33 he scooped a part in a National Theatre production, playing ‘a rich, alcoholic monster’ in Terence Rattigan’s After The Dance. His performance won sparkling reviews, but it was his parents’ approval that he craved.

After the first night, his father was in tears. Irrationally anxious that Tim was weeping because he had been a disappointment, Benedict simply held onto him like a child.

At last, his father said through his tears: ‘You stupid boy. I’m crying because you were so wonderful.’ This uncertainty about the emotions of the people closest to him is at the heart of all Cumberbatch’s insecurities. He doesn’t trust himself to read the people around him, or to say the right thing.

And if he doesn’t trust himself, he can’t trust anyone at all.

In 2010, his career took off when Sherlock caused a national TV sensation. But his mood was bitter.

He dismissed praise with sour soundbites: ‘I’ve been the next big thing for ten years,’ he said.

He turned on friends and colleagues in a series of vicious interviews.  He accused Bond actor Daniel Craig of spouting ‘bull****’ for claiming that he did his own stunts. And he lashed out at family friend Lord Fellowes, calling Downton Abbey ‘sentimental’, ‘cliched’ and ‘f***ing atrocious’.

Later, he apologised profusely. He had no filter, no ‘off’ switch, he said. ‘I am a PR disaster because I talk too much.’

Henry Cavill doesn't let a breakup slow him down it seems. The hunky actor was spotted leaving London's Bodo's Schloss nightclub with a mystery brunette.

The Brit arrived just before midnight and was seen sneaking out of the back entrance at around 3 a.m. Cavill caught a cab with his gal pal, which later dropped her off at her home in North London. So no sleepovers for Superman after all! A source tells E! News, "He had a really fun night there. It was his first time in the nightclub."

 anglo-round2

Before anyone panics, Benedict Cumberbatch has made our Round of 16 in our tournament of Anglophile fan favorites. But the odds-on favorite to winning it all was less than one percentage point from being out in the first round, which would unquestionably have been the greatest upset in the three years we’ve run this feature.

Our takeaway? Never underestimate the enduring devotion of Richard Armitage fans, who have, each year, impressed us with their amazing mobilization in support of their hero. They almost pulled off the unthinkable in testing the Cumberbabes. So there’s no shame for Armitage in his defeat: he’ll be a formidable presence for years to come.

Christian Bale Steals Art, Robert De Niro's Accent, and Dances with Jennifer Lawrence in First American Hustle Trailer

VANITY FAIR
by Julie Miller

Contrary to what the first image from American Hustle told us yesterday, the star of the upcoming David O. Russell drama is not Bradley Cooper's immaculate tight curls. (Although they do get an intimate scene with the hundreds of tiny pink sponge rollers we previously mentioned.) Judging by the trailer, available below, the true star of the film is Christian Bale, a Bronx con man who sounds like Robert De Niro, specializes in stolen art, and is two-timing his loose-cannon wife (Jennifer Lawrence) with the most subtly coiffed woman in the entire movie (Amy Adams)—until, it appears, she gets her hands on Cooper's rollers.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in Cardiff for second day of Sherlock filming

WALES ON LINE
By Liz Day
August 1, 2013

Speculation over the latest series of Sherlock has intensified after Martin Freeman was spotted with a stunt double as smoke emerged from a set in Cardiff Bay.

Nothing escaped the beady eyes of the fans, who followed the crew to Bute Street for a second day of filming, and lined the streets hoping for a glimpse of the action. Yesterday Benedict Cumberbatch was seen filming in Cardiff city centre, along with The Killer star Lars Mikkelsen who will play his nemesis in the latest series of Sherlock.

Today Freeman, who plays Sherlock’s sidekick Dr John Watson, was spied on set at the Grade II listed building 142 Knightbridge, wearing a pale checkered shirt under a black bomber jacket, with blue jeans.

Fans watched as the actor knocked a door and rumours spread like wildfire as he stood next to a stunt double, with smoke wafting from the set.

But the image of the cool, detached character, supposed to be a former army doctor exhausted by his service in Afghanistan, was shattered when Freeman took a break to eat a banana.

Twitter went into overdrive as users shared pictures of the set, using the hash tag “setlock”.

Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the eponymous hero, was also spotted walking into the building around midday, with his costume hidden by a dark hoodie.

His fans went wild, with Twitter user Nicole Chan commenting: “I just love his curls”.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
by Anthony Breznican on Aug 1, 2013 at 11:01AM   @breznican

By the beard of Odin! Behold the latest poster for Thor: The Dark World.

Christopher Eccleston’s Malekith the Accursed looms large, the sky falls, Tom Hiddleston’s eternal troublemaker Loki cackles, and Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster squeezes in close to Chris Hemsworth’s hero, sporting her own fetching Asgardian armor.

Fans would argue Loki is really the one who needs a hug.

The poster for the Nov. 8 movie also shows Malekith’s army of dark elves marching forward in silhouette across the bottom. In the lower right, we see a shimmering palace of Asgard, and above it hovers the Fist of Malekith, the name of his invading Black Ark ship.

The actor, who played the Time Lord from 2005 to 2010, revealed that he thought his comeback to the series was never going to happen because having numerous doctors on screen might not have worked.

"The Doctor tend to lead every scene he is in and when you are sharing that out it becomes slightly different," he told SFX.

"You have a new relationship with that aspect of the character and that gives you fresh challenge to work on.

"For a long time I was starting to think it was never going to happen, so there was an element of surprise there. But the general concept [of a multi-Doctor story] was something I always expected."

After decades in limbo, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. movie may finally be making its way to the big screen. While running down the show’s 35-year journey to film, Variety also dropped some new information about director Guy Ritchie’s adaptation, which stars Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer.

Ritchie and company are looking to start filming in London and Italy on Sept. 7. The piece also firmly states that Cavill will play Napoleon Solo while Hammer is Illya Kuryakin, the main characters from the original NBC series.

Also, the film will actually be set in the ’60s, which sets it apart from the modern day setting of the another 60s spy reboot, the Mission: Impossible franchise.

Guy Ritchie, Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer Try to Crack ‘U.N.C.L.E.’ Movie Challenge

VARIETY
Jon Burlingame

When Guy Ritchie calls “action” on the set of “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” in early September, it will mark the end of a 35-year odyssey to tailor one of the most popular spy series of the 1960s into a major Hollywood movie.

Warner Bros. hopes to spawn a new franchise from the film, starring Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer as U.N.C.L.E. agents Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin, respectively. Tom Cruise had been slotted for the lead role, but when he fell out in late May, the studio insisted its production budget be pared down to about $75 million before moving forward with the picture, targeted to be released next year. The movie, which one of the filmmakers describes as a fairly serious action pic set in the ’60s, will begin production Sept. 7, and film in London and Italy.

With a script by Ritchie and his “Sherlock Holmes” writer and producer Lionel Wigram, the film is an origin story that tells of the first pairing of the two spies — one American, one Russian. Unlike the friendly banter of the original series, the pair are initially hostile to each other, said someone familiar with the script. Ritchie declined multiple interview request

Micheal Fassbender: New Counselor Stills Show Off Brad Pitt In A Big Hat

30 July 2013
Written by Ali Plumb
EMPIRE

Blessed with a strong cast (Michael Fassbender, Penélope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem, Brad Pitt), a strong director (Ridley Scott) and perhaps one of the strongest writers to ever write (Cormac McCarthy), The Counsellor is, it's safe to say, a strong bet for Oscar contention come early next year.

To whet your appetite for such a fortuitous event, here are several more stills from the set, featuring both Cameon Diaz and Brad Pitt in helluvabig hats.

Pitt, who spoke to Empire in Cannes last year after the premiere of Andrew Dominik’s crime thriller Killing Them Softly, said the following about his role in The Counsellor.

“I’m only doing a few days on that,” he explains. “Andrew and I are both Cormac McCarthy fans — I mean, I’ve read every word the guy’s published and most of them more than once. So this was a chance to do something of his and also to work with Ridley again. Ridley gave me my first break into the big leagues [with 1991’s Thelma & Louise]. And I’m a Fassbender fanatic too.”

McCarthy (author of No Country For Old Men, The Road and All The Pretty Horses) delivered the spec screenplay for The Counsellor to his surprised publishers in January last year, and Scott was signed as director only weeks later.
