Benedict Cumberbatch 'bitterly disappointed' as chances to win an Oscar disappear

Daily Star
By Mike Parker / Published 22nd October 2017

The Brit, 41, had been tipped to land a Best Actor gong for playing light bulb inventor Thomas Edison in the upcoming movie, The Current War.

But instead of next month’s planned release, the movie’s opening – along with at least six others produced by fallen tycoon Weinstein – has been deferred “indefinitely”.

None of them will now be eligible for entry at the annual Academy Awards ceremony in LA on March 4.

Critics reckoned it may have been Cumberbatch’s best chance of Oscar glory.

Oscar Beat: Best Actor Predictions—It’s Gary Oldman Then Everyone Else

Collider
Adam Chitwood
October 16, 2017

Well folks, it’s that time. I’ve been covering some preliminary buzz and shakeups in this current awards season for the past couple of months, but as we head into November, the race starts taking a much more solid shape and predictions come into play. All this week I’ll be laying out my preliminary predictions for some of the biggest categories, and I’m kicking things off with the Best Actor race—which, actually, of all the major races is maybe the least exciting of all.

Indeed, while previous years saw various actors jockeying for the top position, this one very much seems like it’s Gary Oldman’s to lose. The beloved performer turns in a wholly transformative performance in Joe Wright’s World War II drama Darkest Hour, in which he plays Winston Churchill. Oldman is indeed as good as everyone’s saying, and bolstered by an Anthony McCarten script that gives him multiple explosive speeches—which he subsequently hits out of the park—this is a film chock full of “Oscar clip”-worthy scenes.

But beyond Oldman, it’s really not that competitive of a Best Actor race—this year Best Supporting Actor is where the real fight is. Timothee Chalamet should absolutely be in contention for his star-making turn in Call Me By Your Name, which continues to rack up critical support after first bowing at Sundance earlier this year. It’s a major contender in multiple big categories, and while younger performers don’t usually score Best Actor nominations, if the Academy takes to Call Me By Your Name the way audiences at Sundance, TIFF, and the New York Film Festival did, he should make the cut.

There’s also Jake Gyllenhaal giving one of the best performances of his career in Stronger, although his footing is less solid given that the film seems to have unperformed at the box office and, disappointingly, is at risk of being forgotten come Oscar time. Andrew Garfield could be back in the mix for his impressive turn as a paraplegic in director Andy Serkis’ true-story drama Breathe. That film has some mediocre reviews, which may stand in Garfield’s way, but the guy’s incredibly likeable and does a swell job in the film. And, let’s face it: if he can get nominated for Hacksaw Ridge, a nod for Breathe is entirely possible.

Benedict Cumberbatch's Oscar Hopeful Just Hit A Major Obstacle

Cinema Blend
By Conner Schwerdtfeger

The last week has seen a whirlwind of controversy sweep through Hollywood. With massive allegations of sexual harassment and misconduct leveled against film industry giant Harvey Weinstein, it has raised some fairly significant questions about the status of films associated with his name. One such film is Benedict Cumberbatch's potential awards darling, The Current War, and it looks like the Thomas Edison biopic has just hit a major obstacle on its road to Oscar season. Specifically, we have officially learned that The Weinstein Company has considered pulling the film from its planned release date in response to its current PR issues.

A new report from The Playlist indicates that The Weinstein Company's upcoming award contender, The Current War, may be pulled from the company's release schedule. Earlier statements from Harvey Weinstein himself had stated that the film was going to receive a significant overhaul anyway (it did not debut to the warmest welcome when it was screened for audiences at the Toronto International Film Festival), but the recent drama involving Weinstein seems to be making the scheduled release for the film even more difficult. Although it was initially set to hit theaters in limited release on November 24, this bump (yet another attempt to distance the company from the controversy) could effectively take it out of the coming year's race for Oscar gold.

After giving birth to her first son Solo in 2012, Rosamund went on to have another boy in December with Old Etonian adventurer and reformed heroin addict Robie Uniacke.

Sticking to the singular theme, a source told Daily Mail that the couple have called their newborn Atom because Rosamund found her home birth ‘so easy and elemental’.

Rosamund was on America’s Tonight Show this week (pictured) talking about her Oscar nomination for best actress.

She has revealed that she has no plans to marry her partner of five years.

‘It is interesting to break all the rules,’ she once said.

‘I’m not married, I have a baby, and it feels infinitely more right.’

Benedict Cumberbatch's talent was spotted in 'saucy' audition while still at school

WALES ON LINE
06:00, 3 February 2015 By Sherna Noah

Benedict Cumberbatch's former drama teacher has told how he spotted the star's talent when he auditioned for the role of a "saucy French maid" as a teenager - and insisted his expensive education has hindered rather than helped his career.

The Imitation Game actor, 38, has been shortlisted for an Academy Award for his role as mathematician and Second World War codebreaker Alan Turing in the movie.

Martin Tyrell, the Sherlock star's drama teacher at public school Harrow, told Radio Times magazine: "Even as a 13-year-old, he was obviously an outstanding actor - a combination of intuition and intellect.

"It's probably once in a lifetime that you find a boy actor as magnificent as this.

"I remember him auditioning very early on for the part of a saucy French maid in a farce. It was a small part, involving a feather duster for about 10 minutes, but even then in rehearsal he was strikingly mature.

"He took direction, immediately understood the comic requirements of the part and was very, very funny. You wonder where on earth the understanding comes from."

Will Tom Hiddleston Be At The 2015 Oscars? Let's Keep Our Fingers Crossed

BUSTLE
DANIELA CABRERA

4 HOURS AGO ENTERTAINMENT
February 2, 2015

My favorite time of year, awards season, is slowly coming to an end. Now I have to actually start being a responsible human being and think about things other than mani-cams, embarrassing red carpet interviews, and possible Lupita Nyong’o and Jared Leto canoodling sessions. Actually the latter won’t end for me because I am convinced it is true love. Anyway, none of this has to happen until the day after Feb. 22, the day of the 2015 Oscars. So now, I can proudly and unabashedly continue my very important inquiries like: will Tom Hiddleston be the Oscars this year?

We here at Bustle have quite a loving history with Tom Hiddleston, and he is one of the few celebs whose positive attitude and beautiful face continue to make everyone smile because… just look at him! While we have speculated about Hiddleston’s appearance at this years Golden Globes and SAG Awards, Hiddleston was a no-show to both of the events which isn’t a good sign for the Oscars, but I, for one, refuse to lose hope!

Jessica Chastain, his co-star in the upcoming Crimson Peak, has been making the rounds for her role in A Most Violent Year and they have become the cutest of karaoke friends, so I like to think that Hiddles will be on hand at the Oscars to celebrate and promote along with her. (He has another very close celeb friend, too, but we can get into that later.)

My final hope is that since the list for the 2015 Oscars presenters has yet to be released, it could very well include Hiddleston. But, in case he and his publicist/whoever is out there reading this desperate plea, here are some of the reasons why he should definitely be there this year.

To Support His BFF

Benedict Cumberbatch, also known as one half of the greatest actor bromance of all time, HiddleBatch, has been out and about on the carpets for his nominations for The Imitation Game. Since Cumberbatch has been nominated for a Best Actor Oscar, it only makes sense that his BFF will be there by his side for emotional support, whether it’s to help celebrate or drown in his sorrows, because thats what friends are for.

To Promote His Upcoming Films

We are about to see a lot more of Hiddleston on the big screen in 2015 seeing as he has four movies scheduled to be released. It only makes sense that he start promoting some of these ahead of time, even though I have a feeling he won’t need that much help to make them successful. He could also use the Oscars to shmooze with some future collaborators over some cocktails because he needs to start lining up 2016!

Oscar Nominations Are In For 2015 - Eddie Redmayne, Benedict Cumberbatch, Rosamund Pike Lead British Charge! (FULL NOMINATIONS LIST)

British hopes will be riding high for this year's Academy Awards, with actors Eddie Redmayne, Benedict Cumberbatch, Felicity Jones and Rosamund Pike all getting Oscar nominations for their work.

Eddie Redmayne's nod follows his triumph at the Golden Globes where he won Best Leading Actor in a Drama for his transformation into scientist Stephen Hawking in the moving drama 'The Theory of Everything'.

Benedict Cumberbatch is also recognised for his work playing a brilliant but challenged scientist, for his part the role of mathematician Alan Turing in 'The Imitation Game'.

Fellow Brit David Oyelowo missed out on a Best Actor nod for 'Selma', although the Martin Luther King biopic did score a nod in the Best Film category.

These actors will be up against Michael Keaton, celebrated for his sparky comeback turn in 'Birdman'. Michael also walked off with a Golden Globe for his role last week, and will surely be Eddie's biggest competition.

It's not all about the men, though. Former Bond girl Rosamund Pike has been nominated for her career-changing turn as the beautiful but unpredictable Amy Dunne in David Fincher's thriller 'Gone Girl', adapted from Gillian Flynn's bestseller.

Felicity Jones has also been tipped for her role of Stephen Hawking's wife Jane, opposite Eddie Redmayne.

These two will be up against firm favourite for her role in 'Still Alice', Julianne Moore, as well as Marion Cotillard and Reese Witherspoon.

'Birdman' and 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' share leading status for the honours, with nine nominations apiece.

Eddie Redmayne Disturbed By Benedict Cumberbatch Comparisons

Eddie Redmayne, the freckled faced Brit who plays Stephen Hawking in "The Theory of Everything," is worried that he might have to compete with Benedict Cumberbatch, the otter faced Brit who plays Alan Turing in "The Imitation Game," when awards season arrives.

"I totally see why people are (comparing us), because of the subject matter; we both play geniuses. But I won't be engaged in that," Redmayne told Variety. "I think he's the most beautiful actor. I've long admired his work, and continue to do so. I hope there's room for both our films."

"There was this hilarious moment when we were shooting a scene at Harrow School," Redmayne continued. "There was a wooden board with names engraved on it, and by my head was 'B. Cumberbatch.' I'm like, 'Dude, you're haunting me!' I took a selfie of me dressed as Stephen and sent it to Ben."

Despite his starring role in "Theory of Everything," Redmayne insists he's "not a movie star."

"A movie star is someone who has to open a film to gazillions of dollars," the 32-year-old actor, who has had parts in "Les Miserables," and "The Good Shepard," said. "I'm just trying to pay my mortgage."

Benedict Cumberbatch on his Oscars U2 photobomb: ‘I was drinking – it was Ellen DeGeneres’ fault!

Remember when Benedict Cumberbatch photobombed U2 on the red carpet at this year’s Oscars? And it was the best thing that had happened in the history of red carpet events? And then someone set it to the Jaws theme and it was EVEN BETTER?

Yeah, apparently the most important moment in Oscars history was all down to Ellen DeGeneres and her bottomless stash of miniature booze, as Benedict told Time Out this week.

“Yes, I photobombed U2! But that was all Ellen DeGeneres’s fault because she plied everyone with vodka on the red carpet,” he cheekboned.

“Her team was handing out these miniatures. A friend really wanted me to get a photo with U2. So I just saw the opportunity and I’ve never felt an impulse like it.

“I spotted them all standing around and I thought, ‘Perfect!’ It wasn’t preordained or anything. I just did it.”

Benedict Cumberbatch involved in parking lot brawl during Oscars

TIMES OF INDIA
ANI | Mar 14, 2014, 12.14 PM IST

Benedict Cumberbatch was apparently involved in a brawl during Oscars weekend earlier this month.

The 'Sherlock' star was reportedly caught in the middle of a scuffle between his limo driver, valets and security over a parking spot outside a Los Angeles hotel.

A source told the National Enquirer that when Cumberbatch's driver pulled up to the hotel, he failed to drive into the semicircular driveway and parked his limo on the street which blocked the exit.

Cumberbatch reportedly tried to diffuse the situation by asking his limo driver to move the vehicle, but a fight eventually broke out.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Vs Tom Hiddleston for the Heart of Emma Watson!

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS TIMES
By charmaine corne clutton | March 5, 2014 5:12 PM EST

Life ruiner Tom Hiddleston pictured with embodiment of perfection Emma Watson. And all the peasants wept.

Emma Watson is a lady indeed. After being linked to her co-stars in the fan favorite and bestselling book, "Harry Potter" in which she starred in. The English actress has been seen in a number of movie adaptations including "The Perks of Being a Wall Flower" where where she stars alongside Logan Lerman and Ezra Miller.

Watson has also been in the latest Sofie Coppola movie "The Bling Ring" a true to life story of the various house heists on Hollywood actors and actresses. Watson is currently dating hunky beau from Oxford and is often seen on various magazines as she is the face for Burberry.

Recently, Emma Watson has been linked to Tom Hiddleston. The "Thor" actor who plays the role of Loki in the movie was spotted with Watson during the GQ Men's awards. The two were seen on the red carpet and the Internet exploded, loving the two together. Tom Hiddleston is also an English gentleman and is certainly a perfect match for Watson.

However, Hiddleston seems to have a contender in Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The latter was seen with Watson at the 86th Academy Awards. Social media site, Twitter, exploded with excited fans when Gordon-Levitt and Watson arrived onstage, arm in arm to present an Oscar. Gordon-Levitt bowed in a gentlemanly curtsy to Watson and she returned the gesture.

Single Benedict Cumberbatch Takes Michael Fassbender To Oscars After Party Instead Of A Girlfriend, Single ’12 Years A Slave’ Stars Have A Boys’ Night Out

FASHION AND STYLE

Benedict Cumberbatch

Benedict Cumberbatch and his “12 Years A Slave” co-star Michael Fassbender both appear to be single, so the friends had a boys' night and partied sans girlfriends at the AGO Oscars after-party after the awards ceremony.

Cumberbatch, 37, and Fassbender, 36, had a lot to celebrate – their film won Best Picture! Both actors have important supporting roles in "12 Years A Slave," with Ford playing a relatively benevolent slave owner who sells main character Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor) to Fassbender’s character, an unbearably cruel slave owner.

“12 Years A Slave” scored major acting nominations, but only Lupita Nyong’o took home the prize, a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role as abused slave Patsey. Fassbender and Ejiofor both scored nominations, Fassbender for Best Supporting Actor and Ejiofor for Best Actor, but lost out to “Dallas Buyers Club” actors Jared Leto (Best Supporting Actor) and Matthew McConaughey (Best Actor).

Entertainmentwise writes that Cumberbatch and Fassbender were joined at the after-party by their co-star Chiwetel Ejiofor, 36. Ejiofur brought his longtime girlfriend Sari Mercer as his Oscars date and also celebrated at the Governors Ball after-party.

After the boys’ night out, Cumberbatch was snapped leaving the AGO party with his publicist, Karon Maskill – no Oscar romance for him. Fassbender was also seen leaving the party alone, apparently single despite earlier rumors linking him to Gerard Butler’s ex-girlfriend, Madalina Ghenea.
