At last year’s Golden Globe Awards “The Night Of” earned three nominations: Best Movie/Miniseries as well as Best Movie/Mini Actor for its two stars, Riz Ahmed and John Turturro. Though it went home empty handed at that event, Ahmed was recently able to win a Primetime Emmy for his leading role, which was among the five total prizes the crime drama took home from the television academy.
Since “The Night Of” already competed at the Golden Globes last year, it won’t be in contention this year. Therefore Ahmed won’t be able to repeat his victory from the Emmys, opening the door for a whole new winner in the Best Movie/Mini Actor race, including several he defeated at the Emmys in September. In the past 16 years the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has chosen a wide variety of winners in this category, ranging from movie stars to veterans to popular Brits to actors in biographical roles. Here are six strong contenders who fit at least one of those molds.

In the past 16 years the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has chosen a wide variety of winners in this category, ranging from movie stars to veterans to popular Brits to actors in biographical roles. Here are six strong contenders who fit at least one of those molds.
Benedict Cumberbatch, “Sherlock: The Lying Detective”
He has contended at the Globes twice before. The first time was in this category for the second season of “Sherlock” in 2013, where he lost to Kevin Costner for “Hatfields & McCoys.” The second time was on the film side for his performance as Alan Turing in “The Imitation Game,” where he lost Best Film Drama Actor to Eddie Redmayne for “The Theory of Everything.” If Cumberbatch is nominated again this year, would a third time be the charm? HFPA members have shown love to Brits in this category six times in the past 16 years, including last year’s champ Tom Hiddleston (“The Night Manager”).
Jude Law, “The Young Pope”
After having been nominated three times before on the film side for his performances in “The Talented Mr. Ripley” (Best Film Supporting Actor, 2000), “A.I. Artificial Intelligence” (Best Film Supporting Actor, 2002), and “Cold Mountain” (Best Film Drama Actor, 2004), Law’s performance as Pope Pius XIII could make him a first-time nominee on the TV side. Like Cumberbatch, he is a Brit, and HFPA members love to award them in this category every once in a while.

Eddie Redmayne tipped to beat Benedict Cumberbatch to Best Actor BAFTA on Sunday
EXPRESS
ANNIE PRICE
Published: 11:15, Sat, February 7, 2015

The 33-year-old is tipped to add the gong to his trophy cabinet at the star-studded awards on Sunday.
Eddie, who has been lauded by the critics for his portrayal of scientist Stephen Hawking in The Theory Of Everything, has already won a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Golden Globe for the role.
If the London-born actor finds himself victorious at the BAFTAs it should make up for his last trip to the awards.
The star missed his big moment in 2013, when he was set to present the award for original screenplay, after he was suddenly taken ill backstage.

That left Lincoln star Sally Field to come on stage alone and tell the audience: "He seems to be puking his guts out back there", before giving the award to Quentin Tarantino for his western Django Unchained.
The actor had to make do with a kind word from his Les Miserables co-star Anne Hathaway who confirmed his illness when she picked up her award for Best Supporting Actress, saying: "Eddie, feel better. I would be holding your hair back, but - food poisoning is just the worst."
Eddie faces tough competition in the Best Actor category, including fellow British star Benedict Cumberbatch for his role in The Imitation Game, as well as Michael Keaton for Birdman, Ralph Fiennes for The Grand Budapest Hotel and Jake Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler.
His on-screen wife, Felicity Jones, could triumph as well after she was nominated for the best actress award against stars including Amy Adams and Reese Witherspoon.
The film is based on the memoirs of Hawking's ex-wife Jane which deals with their relationship, his scientific success and the onset of motor neurone disease which left him severely disabled.
Felicity also faces competition from Gone Girl star Rosamund Pike and Julianne Moore for her emotional portrayal of an Alzheimer's sufferer in Still Alice.
Other nominations include nods for Keira Knightley and Imelda Staunton for best supporting actress and Steve Carell and Ethan Hawke for best supporting actor.
The awards, seen as a dry run for the Oscars, will be handed out at London's Royal Opera House.
Among the other awards presented on the night is the Rising Star, which recognises the best new talent.
Unbroken actor Jack O'Connell is among those nominated along with Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who starred in last year's period drama Belle as a mixed-race aristocrat, and Margot Robbie, who first found fame playing Donna Freedman in TV soap Neighbours and has gone on to appear in The Wolf Of Wall Street.

‘Downton Abbey’s’ Joanne Froggatt Emotional Over Upset Win
VARIETY
Cynthia Littleton
Managing Editor: Television
@Variety_Cynthia
“Downton Abbey” player Joanne Froggatt pulled off an upset win for supporting TV actress — a victory that was all the more meaningful because of the trauma her character endured during season four.
Froggatt said she felt a strong sense of responsibility to rape victims when she had to tackle the storyline in season four that saw her character suffer a sexual assault.
When she learned that her character, lady’s maid Anna Bates, would be raped, Froggatt did research on how the issue was handled for working-class women of the 1920s.

“This is this is a big responsibility,” Froggatt said backstage while she was still trembling from the excitement of winning her first Globe. “Yes it’s a fictional character but maybe people watching at home had been through similar experiences. My worst fear was for people to watch and feel that I wasn’t honest.”
Part of the trauma for Anna was the feeling that she could not tell anybody after the assault in the Downton kitchen. Froggatt said she questioned the decision but was assured by the show’s historical adviser that a working class woman would have been very unlikely to disclose the crime, which compounded the emotion for Froggatt. It took her some time to “get my head around what it meant to be a working-class woman in the 1920s.”

Colin Firth Golden Globes 2015: Inside The DPA Gift Suite
NEON TOMMY
Kelly O'Mara | January 11, 2015 | 1:39 a.m. PST
Staff Reporter

I would imagine that one of the most amazing things about becoming famous is that just as you can finally buy whatever you want, people won’t stop giving you things for free. In fact, I imagine it can almost become a burden—being laden down by all the stuff everyone wants to give you, in the hopes that maybe you will tweet about it, or mention it on TV, or rave over it in a magazine.
Fortunately, the DPA pre-Golden Globes gift lounge comes with people to carry all that free stuff for you.
In the penthouse of the Luxe Hotel on Rodeo Drive, the rain spoiled the view and soaked the temporary carpets on Saturday, but, it didn’t dampen the big news: whispered among the caterers and interns, Colin Firth was wandering with his wife (and his free-stuff-carrier) through the dozen tables of clothing samples, makeup bags, cupcakes, and promotional reps offering elite trips to luxury islands.
For the last ten years, Nathalie Dubois-Sissoko has run Dubois Pelin & Associates gift lounges. Retailers pay her a fee to be included and, in turn, she delivers them celebrities. The businesses come to this small set of rooms—one even flying in from Iceland—because the access might pay off. The celebrities come because, well, even celebrities can’t say no to free stuff.

ROSAMUND PIKE OSCAR POSSIBLE? WHY 'GONE GIRL' STAR COULD GIVE REESE WITHERSPOON FIERCE COMPETITION AT 2015 AWARDS (PHOTOS)
HOLLYWOOD TAKE
By Nick Romano December 17, 2014 1:43 PM
Could Rosamund Pike win Best Actress at the 2015 Oscars? Reese Witherspoon's gripping performance in Wild has been dubbed the one to beat. And Jennifer Aniston's role in Cake is gaining momentum. But many critics say the Gone Girl actress shouldn't be dismissed just yet.
Just a few months ago, the average moviegoer wouldn’t recognize the name Rosamund Pike. But now the breakthrough star of Gone Girl is likely going to earn herself an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. Her director, David Fincher, had some reservations about her casting, but they ultimately proved to be an advantage.
“Rosamund was someone that I had seen in four or five different movies over 10 years, and I never got a bead on her,” he said at the Gone Girl New York premiere. “I never got a sense of who she was. And I pride myself on being able to watch actors and sort of know instinctively what their utility belt is, and I don’t have that with Rosamund. I didn’t know what she was building off of. There was an opacity there and it was interesting.”

Golden Globes: Cumberbatch, Redmayne, Pike and Jones among Britons recognised
BBC NEWS
December 11, 2014

Benedict Cumberbatch, Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones are among a host of British stars in contention for the 2015 Golden Globe awards.
Cumberbatch, Redmayne and fellow Briton David Oyelowo make up three of the nominees for best actor in a drama.
Felicity Jones, Redmayne's co-star in Stephen Hawking biopic The Theory of Everything, is up for best actress in a drama, as is Gone Girl's Rosamund Pike.
The 72nd Golden Globes will be held in Beverly Hills on 11 January.
Cumberbatch's citation comes for his role as World War II code breaker Alan Turing in The Imitation Game, for which Keira Knightley gets a best supporting actress nod.
Bookmakers William Hill make Redmayne their 10/11 favourite to win the best actor in a drama award, with Cumberbatch just behind at 6/4.
Both actors were nominated for Screen Actors Guild awards on Wednesday, as were Jones, Pike and Knightley.
Cumberbatch and Redmayne are expected to receive Oscar nominations next month, as is Michael Keaton for his work in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's darkly comic Birdman.
Because the Golden Globes divides its nominations between dramas and musicals and comedies, Keaton is shortlisted in a different category.
Redmayne said he was "beyond thrilled" and would "have a few mulled wines to celebrate", while Jones, who plays Hawking's first wife Jane in The Theory of Everything, said it was "a tremendous moment to get the news".
Knightley and Pike are among other nominees to have expressed pleasure and thanks at having been recognised.

Lupita Nyong'o Gushes Over 'Close-Knit' Relationship With Michael Fassbender On 12 Years A Slave Set
ENTERTAINMENT WISE
By Alicia Adejobi On February 12, 2014

It's undeniable that Lupita Nyong'o shared a unique on-screen chemistry with Michael Fassbender in the Oscar-nominated 12 Years A Slave so it comes as no surprise that the pair also had a close bond away from the set with the actress revealing that they spent a lot of time together when they weren't filming scenes.
The 30-year-old has so far won several awards and nominations for her emotional turn as Patsey in the slavery-period drama starring alongside Chiwetel Ejiofor, however, it's Lupita's brutal relationship with slave owner Edwin Epps played by Fassbender that really tugs on the heart strings.
Speaking about their relationship in real life, Lupita told Glamour magazine: “Michael and I had a ritual that we never even really spoke about: We would make nice right before a scene, and then we’d make nice after a scene.
“Just looking into each other’s eyes, an embrace, squeeze of the hands - that would button the scene. And at the end of the day when [director] Steve [McQueen] said cut, we would go out and enjoy the freedom that these people we were playing have granted us. It was a very close-knit cast and crew.”

Dame Judi Dench gave the Golden Globes a miss this year, despite her nomination, because she was back on set to film the sequel to British-Indian comedy The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
The award-winning actress was given a ride on to the Jaipur set where she got ready to film scenes as hotel resident Evelyn, with returning cast members Celia Imrie, Ronald Pickup and Diana Hardcastle.
But soon Judi, 79, will be welcoming American actor Richard Gere, who was recently announced as the latest addition to the cast.
But with only one vacancy left in the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for the Elderly and Beautiful, Richard's character is pit against another would-be guest, played by Tamsin Greig, for the room.
John Madden returns to the director's chair with Bill Nighy also set to reprise his role.

The Carnival Films show, which airs on Masterpiece on PBS in the country, reached an average of 12.3 million viewers, with the entire third series averaging 11.5 million viewers.
It has become the highest-rating TV drama in PBS's history, and has reached over 24 million viewers overall.
The numbers for the program - written by Julian Fellowes and executive produced by Gareth Neame, Liz Trubridge and Julian Fellowes - see a seven million increase on the US ratings for series two.
Over the course of the three series, Downton Abbey has won nine Emmys, three Golden Globes and, most recently, the SAG Award for 'Outstanding Ensemble Cast in a Drama Series'.

Colin Firth - Bradley Cooper Wore Eco-friendly Tux To Golden Globes (CONTACT MUSIC)
Colin Firth's eco-warrior wife has heaped praise on Bradley Cooper for daring to wear a tuxedo made of recycled materials to the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday (13Jan13).
Livia Firth convinced the actor to don a Tom Ford tuxedo made from ethical wool for her Green Carpet Challenge (Gcc), which asks top designers to create environmentally-friendly red-carpet looks.
In a post on her blog, Livia writes, "This year we opted to celebrate menswear as the divine Golden Globes nominee Bradley Cooper joined the Gcc in a two piece suit by Tom Ford, designed exclusively for the Green Carpet Challenge.
"The suit was made from... low environmental impact, European spun and woven wool suiting. As Gcc fans will know, while we love the glitz and the excitement of the red carpet, we are fascinated by the supply chain and this project gave us the chance to... create a beautiful fibre that stands the test of time.

Golden Globes 2013: Hugh Jackman, Daniel Day-Lewis win actor honors (LA TIMES)
By John Horn
January 13, 2013, 8:05 p.m.
In an evening with some mild surprises, two favorites won the top actor honors at the Golden Globes: Daniel Day-Lewis for "Lincoln" and Hugh Jackman for "Les Miserables."
For playing the 16th president of the United States, Day-Lewis won for best actor in a drama. Clips from the movie were introduced earlier by former President Bill Clinton. "Are you sure there's room for another ex-president on this stage?" the actor said in accepting the prize from the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn.
Jackman won for best actor in a musical or comedy for starring as the prisoner turned humanitarian Jean Valjean in "Les Miserables." He thanked director Tom Hooper, adding that he nearly pulled out of the project.
"I never told you this," Jackman told Hooper from the stage, "but three weeks in, we had a terrible rehearsal, and I was going to call you and tell you someone else had to play this role. My wife talked me out of it."
