Tom Hiddleston Shares First Look at 'High-Rise'

MOVIEWEB
Feb 6, 2015 by B. Alan Orange

Worried there just won't be enough Tom Hiddleston to go around on the big screen this year, as he most likely won't have much screen time in Avengers: Age of Ultron? You'll be happy to know he takes the lead in High-Rise, an adaptation of J.G. Ballard's popular novel. To help ease the pain of these Tom Hiddleston-free days, the actor himself has posted a first look image at the thriller on his Personal Twitter, introducing his character Dr Laing.

High-Rise takes place in a new residential tower built on the eve of Margaret Thatcher's rise to power, at the site of what will soon become the world's financial hub. Designed as a luxurious solution to the problems of the city, it is a world apart. Enter Robert Laing (Tom Hiddleston), a young doctor seduced by the High-Rise and its creator, the visionary architect Anthony Royal (Jeremy Irons). Laing discovers a world of complex loyalties, and also strikes up a relationship with Royal's devoted aide Charlotte (Sienna Miller).

High-Rise is in development and stars Tom Hiddleston, Sienna Miller, Jeremy Irons, Luke Evans, Elisabeth Moss, James Purefoy, Reece Shearsmith, Peter Ferdinando. The film is directed by Ben Wheatley.

MOVIES NEWS / MERLINE ERDA

Tom Hiddleston is so much more

There are a lot of hugely talented British actors in Hollywood these days and many of them have become much sought after stars. One of the biggest and best British actors in Hollywood at the moment would have to be the talented and handsome Tom Hiddleston, who has given us some fantastic performances in recent years, in some brilliant movies.

Most of you will know Tom Hiddleston mainly for playing the role of Loki in the hit Marvel movies but there is so much more to than actor that just playing this Marvel villain. Tom has played so many more impressive characters over the years and also has plenty more projects lined up for the coming years.

Next up for Tom Hiddleston is a role in the movie High-Rise, which co-stars Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller, Luke Evans, Elisabeth Moss, and James Purefoy, with a release date expected sometime in 2015. Luke Evans and Elisabeth Moss join Tom Hiddleston in High-Rise

Tom Hiddleston is in good company in Ben Wheatley’s adaptation of J.G. Ballard’s thriller High-Rise as Luke Evans and Elisabeth Moss join the ranks, Variety reports.

The story charts the lives of affluent residents of a futuristic apartment block, in which all modern amenities are contained, leaving them cut off from the rest of society. It’s an unnerving tale of life running out of control, as residents become driven by their primal urges.

Hiddleston plays the role of doctor Robert Laing, who is fascinated by the building, forming a relationship with the architect’s aide Charlotte, played by Sienna Miller.

Evans was most recently seen on the big screen in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. He’s a busy man too, taking on the title role in Dracula Untold, which is due for release on 3 October.

Moss is perhaps best-known for her role as Peggy Olson in TV hit Mad Men and for her Golden Globe-winning turn in Top of the Lake.

Big-name stars Jeremy Irons, James Purefoy and Reece Shearsmith will also star.

‘The Following’ season 2 spoilers: Confirmation and James Purefoy

CARTER
August 7, 2013

Just in case you for whatever reason had any doubt at all regarding whether or not Joe Carroll was still alive on “The Following,” we have this story here to prove to you that the character is still alive and kicking.

Granted, you probably assumed this courtesy of the news that James Purefoy is still going to be back on the show for more, but it is always nice to hear something that confirms it.

New scoop! -

Of course, Purefoy is not interested in having Kevin Williamson follow him around with a pitchfork, so he has kept a lot of the details about the upcoming episodes a secret. However, he did tell E! News in a new interview that he does not see Joe repeating anything that got him in trouble last time. He’s a smart man, and that to us translates mostly to mean that he is rather resourceful:

“I think he’ll learn from lost mistakes and I think he’ll rise up like a phoenix and create more murder, mischief, and mayhem.”

NEWS/ The Following at Comic-Con 2013: James Purefoy Makes Surprise Appearance, Returning For Season 2

The Following

TV SCOOP
by Tierney Bricker

Talk about a killer return!

Though he wasn't scheduled to attend 2013 Comic-Con, James Purefoy made a surprise appearance at The Following's panel on Friday, joining executive producers Kevin Williamson and Marcos Siega and actors Kevin Bacon, Shawn Ashmore and Valorie Curry.

And though his iconic serial killer character Joe Carroll was supposedly killed off in the finale (being inside a building that blows up tends to do that), it was announced that Purefoy will be returning as a series regular for the Fox hit's highly anticipated second season, debuting January 2014. We guess Joe had a few more tricks up his sleeve after all!

Purefoy popped up in character to make the announcement via a "phone call" with Bacon's Ryan. "On the contrary, Ryan, I'm very much alive and kicking," he said.  "My apologies for not calling sooner…You didn't really think you could do a Comic-Con panel without me?"

JAMES PUREFOY: ‘The Following’ finale spoilers: Assorted teases from James Purefoy (CARTER)

We don’t need to tell you at this point that Monday night’s season finale for “The Following” is going to be intense. Odds are, you have already seen the last 14 episodes, and know just what the Fox series is building up to: An epic showdown between Ryan Hardy and Joe Carroll. Is it going to be their last stand? That is what is still unclear. There’s only so long that viewers are going to want to watch Hardy chase after one villain, especially since it further steps over the bounds of realism to have a serial killer out there for years on end without a capture.

The teasers we have to share now from James Purefoy (via E! News), are vague at the moment, but nonetheless insight....

With all the twists and turns that have marked The Following's first season, we wouldn't be surprised if creator Kevin Williamson doesn't sneak in another twist in the show's final two episodes. Like... a mole in the FBI perhaps? We know Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) was able to infiltrate local law enforcement with Roderick (Warren Kole) and also put Molly (Jennifer Ferrin) in place to keep an eye on Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon). But who else is in on it?

With only three episodes remaining, The Following has been building to an epic confrontation between Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) and Joe Carrol (James Purefoy).  The FBI is closing in on his location and if you've caught the previews of tonight's episode, "Havenport",  you probably know they are about to get a big boost from one of Carrol's most trusted insiders:  Roderick himself.

So what will the setup for The Following's finale be?  Will Ryan and his Federal compadres descend on Joe's compound Waco style and force Joe into a desperation play, or has the psycho prepared for this all along.  Thanks to a collection of images from next week's penultimate episode "The End is Near" we have some tantalizing details of what is to come.  Not major spoilers, mind you, but enough to set the stage for what is bound to be an incredible finale for The Following.

James Purefoy takes the EW Pop Culture Personality Test (and proves he's not so scary after all) -- VIDEO (EW)

by Mandi Bierly

To know how convincing he is as serial killer Joe Carroll on Fox’s The Following, all James Purefoy has to do is walk down the street. “I got out of a car the other day, and I was talking to somebody, and as I turned, I bumped into this middle-aged lady, and she made the sound of a small dog being kicked. She didn’t scream, she yelped at me,” he says. “It turned out that she’d been watching the show the night before and thinking about it, and then suddenly, poof, there I was.”

James Purefoy: The Following renewed for season 2 News Louisa Mellor 5 Mar 2013 - 07:00 (DEN OF GEEK)

Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy will be taking another spin on the serial killer merry-go-round as Fox renews The Following...

Fans of puppet master serial killer drama The Following can rest easy in the knowledge that, though we're almost at the halfway point in season one, a further fifteen episodes are on their way. The Kevin Williamson thriller starring Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy as a former FBI agent and his cult-leading serial-killing nemesis, has just been renewed for season two.

Described by Fox as an "edge-of-your-seat" "thrill ride", The Following debuted to somewhat mixed reviews, but audience interest has seen it through. Fulfilling the unspoken rule that everyone involved with The Following has to be named Kevin, here's what Fox entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly had to say:

JAMES PUREFOY: “FOLLOWING” IN BLOODY FOOTSTEPS (FANGORIA)

Posted by Abbie Bernstein Feb 13, 2013

In person, actor James Purefoy seems like a charming, erudite fellow. So does his character Joe Carroll on THE FOLLOWING—at first. Carroll is a serial killer who escapes from prison in the first episode of the hit Fox thriller, only to be recaptured by Kevin Bacon’s character, ex-FBI agent Ryan Harding. Alas, Ryan discovers as the series goes on that Carroll has quite a few friends on the outside who are willing to die—and kill—for him in extremely gruesome fashion.

While THE FOLLOWING (which airs Monday nights at 9/8 Central) was created by SCREAM originator Kevin Williamson, the show is notably far more serious than the film franchise—which seems to be fine with TV audiences, who have tuned in en masse for the episodes aired so far. Part of the fun, and the fear, is that anybody can be one of Carroll’s disciples, from an angelic-looking young nanny to a seemingly friendly security guard, and they can have been living in constructed identities for years.

The Somerset, England-born Purefoy is no stranger to horror, having starred alongside Milla Jovovich in the original RESIDENT EVIL as her treacherous boyfriend, played the title role in SOLOMON KANE and appeared as Henry Clerval in the 2007 televersion of FRANKENSTEIN, but he’s never had a role quite like Carroll. He has played a very tricky and occasionally homicidal lawyer in the English miniseries INJUSTICE, but isn’t sure if that character would have followed Joe Carroll or not. “I suppose he might have. I don’t know. I think that character was very much his own man.”

The actor helpfully explains the proper pronunciation of his last name—“Pure—like orange juice—foy”—and then gets down to the business of discussing how came to play a charismatic, persuasive college professor-turned-murderer. Wanting to work in the U.S. was “very much” part of the equation, Purefoy explains. “I was beginning to feel a bit lonely in London. A lot of my friends came over here and have been part of the great American golden age of television. I had been asked to do a number of pilots, and this one was sitting there, and I was offered it and Kevin and I had to go and sniff each other’s behinds like a couple of dogs in the park.”

JAMES PUREFOY: 'The Following': Joe Carroll Gets Under Ryan Hardy's Skin (Exclusive Video) 12:55 PM PST 2/8/2013 by Philiana Ng (THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER)

In a scene from Monday's The Following, exclusive to The Hollywood Reporter, Ryan (Kevin Bacon) squares off against notorious serial killer Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) to get information from Joe about Maggie's (Virginia Kull) connection to the location of Claire Matthews' (Natalie Zea) kidnapped son Joey.

Ryan and Joe have a lot of history, the origin of which is established in this past Monday's episode, but the interrogation in "Mad Love" is still fraught with tension.

The Following: Kevin Bacon, James Purefoy and Kevin Williamson Preview TV's Next Big Thriller (E!)

by Jenna Mullins

How do you get someone like Kevin Bacon to star in your TV show? Kevin Williamson (The Vampire Diaries) apparently has the key.

"When it came time to cast Ryan Hardy I was like, 'Well, we need someone like Kevin Bacon. We should get someone like Kevin Bacon,' thinking we'd never get someone like Kevin Bacon," Williamson tells us. Turns out, Kevin had all the ammunition he needed in the form of his pilot script.

"I knew that I wanted to do something that was heroic. And I knew that if I was going to do something heroic the guy would have to be complex and have vulnerabilities…and have a certain kind of damaged nature," Bacon says to us about his retired FBI character. "The show moves at a breakneck speed, and every time I get a new script, I pick it up and what I'm mostly amazed at is that both from a plot standpoint and from a character standpoint, there are so many things I don't see coming."

The Following Video Looks At Kevin Bacon And James Purefoy's Characters Author: Kelly West (CINEMA BLEND)

Among the handful of shows that we selected as the top new series we can't wait to start watching this winter is Kevin Williamson's suspenseful looking Fox thriller The Following. Fox has wisely been sharing promotional content for the drama over the last couple of months, and among the more recent videos is one that talks about the intentions of serial killer Joe Carroll and Kevin Bacon's character, FBI Agent Ryan Hardy.

The Following stars Kevin Bacon as an FBI agent who's brought out of retirement to pursue convicted serial killer Joe Carroll (James Purefoy). In addition to escaping, Carroll's also been developing a group of devoted followers , which explains the title of the new series.

The video below features clips from the drama, some of which should be familiar if you've seen the previously released trailers and previews. But it also includes series creator Kevin Williamson as well as Bacon and Carroll as they talk about the series.
