Colin Firth kicks ass in WonderCon sneak peak of Matthew Vaugh's 'Secret Service'

HIT FIX
By Philip Pirrello, Comic Book Resources   Monday, Apr 21, 2014 7:15 PM

(CBR) Even though footage from "Secret Service" previously screened at CinemaCon earlier this year, a second showing at WonderCon did not disappoint.

Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming adaptation of Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons' comic centers on a team of covert agents, operating to save the world much like MI-6 and the CIA do – minus the red tape. And with a lot more face busting.

The clip opened with team leader Uncle Jack (Colin Firth) nursing a pint in a UK pub opposite new recruit Gary, played by newcomer Taron Egerton. After exchanging expository dialogue, the drinks are interrupted by a group of hooligans wanting to pick a fight with Gary.

Cue Uncle Jack locking up the bar moments before beating the hell out of these guys, with an umbrella. The most inventive use of the umbrella comes at the end of the fight, as Jack deploys it as a shield to deflect bullets from an assailant – while keeping his sights on his attacker using a night-vision like screen making up the interior of the parasol.

Spy games are a family affair in the new international trailer for Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. Chris Pine and Keira Knightley's marriage gets wrapped up in a complex web of international spy intrigue, and spy intrigue in Hollywood means a lot of stuff getting shot at and blown up.

CIA analyst and desk jockey Jack Ryan (Pine) must go operational to stop the nefarious plans of Viktor Cherevin (Kenneth Branagh), whose Russian accent tells you he's the bad guy behind all of the global corporate evil going on. Kevin Costner plays Jack's steely CIA handler.

The trailer for Taken 2 just came out, and it looks like Liam Neeson's badass ex-CIA-agent character Bryan Mills is going to have to kill everybody again, this time to get back his wife. Let the mayhem begin! Take a look.

Isn't that always the way? First your daughter gets into trouble, like daughters do, letting creepy guys in Paris snatch her so they can sell her into white slavery. Then, wouldn't you know it, your wife goes and gets herself kidnapped on what was supposed to be a relaxing vacation in Istanbul. Women!

Sean Bean: ‘Missing,’ Season 1, Episode 7, ‘A Measure of a Man’: TV Recap MISSING (WALL STREET JOURNAL)

This episode sacrifices some of the series’ usual breakneck pace of action to focus on plot.

Much of the episode involves the CIA’s “Operation Songbird” that then-agents Paul and Becca Winstone conducted in Vienna in 1999, when their son was a boy. We get the story through flashbacks as well as Becca’s narration during an interrogation—in an undisclosed location–by CIA official Jamie Ortega, who suspects her of working with a network of rogue agents, and through the narration of Martin, the Winstones’ then-case officer.

Martin is aiding CIA agents investigating the disappearance of the Winstones’ son, Michael, now 18, which occurred in the first episode. Jamie suspects Becca because her husband, Paul, believed to have been killed in an explosion 10 years earlier, was discovered to be alive in previous episodes.

The CIA believes Paul is part of a vast network of rogue former agents from many countries that is involved in selling drugs and diamonds as well as in human trafficking. That network is headed by a long-sought “Suspect Zero.”

Sean Bean: 'Missing': Ashley Judd And Cliff Curtis Preview Their Globe-Trotting New Mystery Show (VIDEO) (HUFF POST)

On the new series, Ashley Judd stars as Becca Winstone, a single mother left widowed after her husband CIA agent Paul Winstone (Sean Bean) is murdered right in front of their eight-year-old son, Michael (Nick Eversman). Now, her son is all grown up and, at 18, wants to travel the world and study abroad. When he disappears, Becca heads to Rome to investigate things herself, and that's where the adventure begins. Paul wasn't the only CIA agent in the family -- Becca is soon calling on old agency friends and hitting roadblocks along the way (like Dax Miller, played by Cliff Curtis) as she travels across Europe to get her son back.

Sean Bean: Gone, baby gone Ashley Judd runs, jumps and cries on ‘Missing’ (NEW YORK POST)

By LARRY GETLEN

In “Missing,” Judd plays Becca Winstone, who lost her CIA-agent husband, played by Sean Bean (the former “Game of Thrones” star will be seen in flashbacks throughout the season), 10 years ago in a mysterious explosion.

When her college-age son goes missing in Europe, Becca — who, we quickly learn, was also a high-level CIA operative — travels the continent to find him, battling all manner of violent attacking fiends along the way.

Judd, 43, says she has rejected plenty of television work, but the show’s stunt factor was part of what brought her aboard. “I love to fight, and I’m really good at it,” says Judd. “I think it has to do with the Vinyasa yoga practice I have, where there’s a lot of slow sequences, and a lot of energy that moves in ways similar to fighting.

To tap into that fierce goddess energy is really, really fun.” While Judd’s experiences in yoga, and in her many films, helped her prepare for the stunt work, it also didn’t hurt that her husband is two-time Indianapolis 500 champion Dario Franchitti.

“We do a Vespa chase scene [in the pilot],” says Judd. “I said, ‘OK babe, I’m gonna be riding a Vespa.’ And he reminded me of the ways in which it’s different from a motorbike: the steering is different, the breaking is different, the center of gravity. I wanna make sure I’m careful and do it right, so he doesn’t groan when he watches it.”

Reese Witherspoon may have been the leading lady in ‘This Means War’ but it was her costars Chelsea Handler and Tom Hardy who deserved a big round of applause.

Witherspoon stars as Lauren, a consumer products tester who dates two CIA operatives at the same time.

When the agents and best friends FDR (Chris Pine) and Tuck (Hardy) find out they are dating the same woman, the claws come out as they battle it out for her affection using extreme spy tactics.

The love triangle gets even messier when villain Heinrish, played by ‘Inglorious Basterds' star Til Schweiger, seeks his revenge on the agents over the death of his brother.

Hardy injected his cheeky British humour as Tuck who charms his love interest with his sweet and charismatic persona. The actor's romantic comedy part shows his versatility as a leading man after playing more serious roles in ‘Batman,’ ‘Inception’ and ‘Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy’.

US TV host Handler was the other stand out as she brought her famously candid sense of humour to her role as Trish who acts as a sounding board for her best friend Lauren as she struggles to choose between the two men.

Henry Cavill, Bruce Willis, and a badass Sigourney Weaver in this Cold Light of Day trailer (JoBlo.com)

by: Alex Riviello Jan. 30, 2012

Oh, THE COLD LIGHT OF DAY trailer. You had me at "Sigourney Weaver with a gun". It's indeed great to see the giantess in full-on villain form in this trailer for the film- it's been so long! Here we see Henry Cavill star as an American guy whose family is kidnapped while on vacation in Spain, which probably has something to do with his CIA agent father played by Bruce Willis. The trailer's a bit of a surprise as it definitely looks entertaining as hell and seems to have come out of nowhere, with news being light since the film was announced in last 2010. Summit Entertainment is releasing THE COLD LIGHT OF DAY on April 6th.
