Oscar Beat: Best Actor Predictions—It’s Gary Oldman Then Everyone Else

Collider
Adam Chitwood
October 16, 2017

Well folks, it’s that time. I’ve been covering some preliminary buzz and shakeups in this current awards season for the past couple of months, but as we head into November, the race starts taking a much more solid shape and predictions come into play. All this week I’ll be laying out my preliminary predictions for some of the biggest categories, and I’m kicking things off with the Best Actor race—which, actually, of all the major races is maybe the least exciting of all.

Indeed, while previous years saw various actors jockeying for the top position, this one very much seems like it’s Gary Oldman’s to lose. The beloved performer turns in a wholly transformative performance in Joe Wright’s World War II drama Darkest Hour, in which he plays Winston Churchill. Oldman is indeed as good as everyone’s saying, and bolstered by an Anthony McCarten script that gives him multiple explosive speeches—which he subsequently hits out of the park—this is a film chock full of “Oscar clip”-worthy scenes.

But beyond Oldman, it’s really not that competitive of a Best Actor race—this year Best Supporting Actor is where the real fight is. Timothee Chalamet should absolutely be in contention for his star-making turn in Call Me By Your Name, which continues to rack up critical support after first bowing at Sundance earlier this year. It’s a major contender in multiple big categories, and while younger performers don’t usually score Best Actor nominations, if the Academy takes to Call Me By Your Name the way audiences at Sundance, TIFF, and the New York Film Festival did, he should make the cut.

There’s also Jake Gyllenhaal giving one of the best performances of his career in Stronger, although his footing is less solid given that the film seems to have unperformed at the box office and, disappointingly, is at risk of being forgotten come Oscar time. Andrew Garfield could be back in the mix for his impressive turn as a paraplegic in director Andy Serkis’ true-story drama Breathe. That film has some mediocre reviews, which may stand in Garfield’s way, but the guy’s incredibly likeable and does a swell job in the film. And, let’s face it: if he can get nominated for Hacksaw Ridge, a nod for Breathe is entirely possible.

15 Surprising Facts About Tom Hardy

Mental Floss
Jennifer M Wood

You don't have to be a Hollywood insider to know that Tom Hardy is widely considered to be one of the most talented actors of his generation … and that he has a reputation for not always being willing to play by Hollywood’s rules.

Since making his onscreen debut in 2001, the London native has gone on to collaborate with some of the world’s most talented filmmakers, including Ridley Scott, George Miller, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Sofia Coppola, and Christopher Nolan (on three occasions, and counting). He also created, produced, and starred in the FX hit Taboo and earned an Oscar nomination for his role in The Revenant—and all of this before hitting the big 4-0.

1. HE WON A TELEVISION MODELING CONTEST.

Technically, Tom Hardy’s onscreen debut came in 1998, when he took part in a modeling contest on the British morning show The Big Breakfast. Among the facts we learned about the then-21-year-old: He was a drama student who idolized Gary Oldman, liked Eddie Izzard, wanted to write and direct his own short films, and didn’t like football. And yes, he won.

2. HE MADE HIS ONSCREEN DEBUT IN BAND OF BROTHERS.
In September of 1998, shortly after he began attending the Drama Centre London, Hardy dropped out when he was offered a role in the Steven Spielberg-produced WWII miniseries Band of Brothers (2001). When asked about the experience by IGN in 2002, Hardy said that, “Band of Brothers was my first job so I was virtually out of the frying pan and into the fire, really. I'd not had previous experience with working in front of the camera, so there was dealing with that. Also, I had the research material—not that I'd need it. I mean, I was in two episodes and had 12 lines. That was the sum total of work [I] had to do.”

Hardy made his big-screen debut in 2001 as well, playing Twombly in Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down. “I was the Ranger who got left behind,” he told IGN. “He was sort of, if you could call it, comic relief to [a] very precarious situation.”

3. HE WENT TO SCHOOL WITH MICHAEL FASSBENDER.
While attending the Drama Centre London, Hardy looked up to a fellow student who was two years older than him: Michael Fassbender. “He was a really serious method actor and we used to watch him and think, ‘F**k, man! He’s the sh*t!,’” Hardy told The Daily Beast. “He was in an Irish play about this guy who came back from the First World War who was a great athlete but ended up in a wheelchair, but at lunchtime he wouldn’t come out of character and was always in his wheelchair and we’d be like, ‘Dude! Just order your lunch and come along! We’ve got an hour before we have to go back to class! But he was the best actor in the school.” (Fassbender, too, landed a role in Band of Brothers.)

4. HARDY REPLACED FASSBENDER IN TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY.
Though their careers have taken different paths, Hardy and Fassbender overlapped a bit in 2010, when Hardy replaced Fassbender as British operative “Tricky” Ricky Tarr in Tomas Alfredson’s 2011 adaptation of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, a Cold War thriller based on the John le Carré novel.

5. HE IDOLIZES GARY OLDMAN.
That aforementioned modeling contest wouldn’t be the only time Hardy expressed his admiration of Gary Oldman. In 2011, he told ShortList that, “Gary Oldman is my absolute complete and utter hero. He’s the f**king man. I look at him and I want to be like that for my generation—I want to have that same quality. He’s incredible.”

That same year, Hardy got the chance to star alongside Oldman in the Oscar-nominated Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. “There is a definite ‘hang on a minute’ [moment], but I’ve got past the star-struck part now,” Hardy said of getting the chance to act opposite Oldman. They have since worked together on three more films: Lawless (2012), The Dark Knight Rises (2012), and Child 44 (2015).

Big-budget movies or TV? It’s all the same for Rellik star Ray Stevenson

The Sunday Post
Written by Bill Gibb, 25 September 2017

Brought up in Northumberland, Ray now flies halfway round the world to share a screen with Cate Blanchett.

And as iN10 catches up with him to chat about the BBC’s gritty serial killer drama, he admits it’s not the worst acting gig around.

Northern Ireland-born Ray plays Volstagg, one of the characters in the blockbuster Thor franchise.

“He wasn’t going to be in Thor 3 but then Marvel decided to fly me down to Brisbane to shoot a scene with Cate,” explains Ray.

“It was great. My kids were on set while she was destroying every known world in the universe.

“When you fly back, you’ve no idea what planet you’re on, but it’s a high class problem to have.

“The toughest thing is what to do between jobs, to just try and be normal.”

Ray has become one of Hollywood’s favourite Brit stars and Oscar-winner Blanchett is just one luminary he’s found himself acting alongside.

One of his three forthcoming films, Final Score, sees him play Pierce Brosnan’s brother and he’s also been in movies with the likes of Samuel L. Jackson, Christopher Walken, Gary Oldman, Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg.

“I’ve had the most tremendous time. I went toe-to-toe with The Rock in GI Joe: Retaliation.

“I’ve got about a quarter of a centimetre height on him, but his arms are the size of my legs!

“All credit to him. He’s completely committed himself to such a playing range and he does it with such conviction.

“And then there was Denzel Washington, a double Oscar-winner. He was a consummate actor and a very decent person.

Are Benedict Cumberbatch & Gary Oldman Locked In For STAR WARS: EPISODE VII?

COMIC BOOK MOVIE.COM
By Mark "RorMachine" Cassidy - 2/24/2014

At this stage I know we're all fed up with constant rumors and would like some solid news - but, MarketSaw have been on the ball when it comes to Star Wars related scoops in the past, so their latest casting updates might be worth paying attention to..

MarketSaw (who actually broke the news that Lucasfilm had plans for the new Star Wars trilogy in the first place) are reporting on some casting updates for the J.J. Abrams directed flick, as well as providing some possible plot information. According to them not only are Ford, Hamill and Fisher locked in, but Billy Dee Williams (Lando), Ian McDiarmid (Emperor Palpatine) Anthony Daniels (C3PO) and Warwick Davies (Wicket) too. As for the new faces, they reckon that long rumored cast addition Benedict Cumberbatch is in, and so is Gary Oldman - who recently confirmed that he'd had some "conversations", but never really indicated if he would take them up on the offer or not. Here's the most interesting part:

"I believe Cumberbatch and Oldman were pursued for the same role. I don't know how that will work out with the script changes, but I'm told they are both involved."

Gary Oldman: Benedict Cumberbatch is the Porsche 911 of actors

Radio Times staff
3:35 PM, 14 August 2013

“He’s a stick-shift; he’s changing up and changing down,” said Oldman, who worked with Cumberbatch on spy drama Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and has had time to study him since.

“Someone like Tony Hopkins has this quiet intensity about him. That’s your luxury sedan,” Oldman told US Vogue magazine for a feature on Cumberbatch. “Then you’ve got Benedict. He’s a Porsche 911.”

Brrrrmmm…

What Has Hottie Tom Hardy Been Up To?

Posted on 7/27/2013 2:00:00 PM
by Nathaniel Grey
FRONTIERS LA.COM

The Dark Knight Rises' Tom Hardy has joined the U.S.S.R.-set spy drama Child 44, based on the first book in author Tom Rob Smith's trilogy.

Easy Money director Daniel Espinosa leads this tale about a security officer trying to investigate a series of child murders in a society that denies such crimes exist in their country. Despite being demoted and eventually exiled, with the support of his wife he can't let go of his quest for justice. Joining Hardy are The Killing's Joel Kinnaman, Prometheus' Noomi Rapace, Harry Potter's Gary Oldman and The Master's Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Hardy has completed filming a couple different projects that are in post-production. Among them are James Gandolfini's final film, the crime drama Animal Rescue, which brings together a few story elements including a murder, lost pit bull and a scam artist.

Based on a short story by Shutter Island author Dennis Lehanne, the film costars Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows' Noomi Rapace, Orange is the New Black cast member Elizabeth Rodriguez and Animal Kingdom's James Frecheville.

Benedict Cumberbatch Steps Closer To Flying Horse June 17, 2013 Lauren Humphries-Brooks (WE GOT THIS COVERED)

Benedict Cumberbatch2 Benedict Cumberbatch Steps Closer To Flying Horse

Aside from having the greatest name ever, Benedict Cumberbatch has been doing pretty well for himself. He’s got a hit TV show and is making big strides into Hollywood, what with his role as the baddie in Star Trek Into Darkness, The Hobbit films, The Fifth Estate, August: Osage County, and 12 Years A Slave. Everybody wants a piece of this guy, including his Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy co-star Gary Oldman, who we recently reported is interested in casting Cumberbatch in his biopic of film pioneer Eadweard Muybridge, entitled Flying Horse. Now it appears that Cumberbatch might very well be interested in that part.

The part Cumberbatch would be playing in Flying Horse is not Muybridge, but Major Harry Larkyns. Larkyns was the theatre critic that Muybridge murdered in 1874 after discovering that Larkyns had an affair with his wife and possibly fathered their son Florado. Muybridge tracked down Larkyns and shot him at point-blank range, then later pleaded insanity to the murder charges. If the cast that Gary Oldman wants comes through, Muybridge will be played by Ralph Fiennes, while Cumberbatch takes on the role of Larkyns.

Gary Oldman Eyeing Ralph Fiennes & Benedict Cumberbatch For His Sophomore Directorial Effort 'Flying Horse' NEWS BY KEVIN JAGERNAUTH (INDIEWIRE)

It has been seventeen years since Gary Oldman dropped his feature length directorial debut and cult fave "Nil By Mouth," but he hasn't yet followed it up with anything. Not that he's been short of ideas. Back in 2011, he said he wanted to team up Colin Firth for an unnamed remake, while in early 2012 he said he had a project about a sex addict he wanted to direct. Well, the good news is that Oldman does have a new directorial effort cooking, and the surprising part is that it's none of those.

Instead, it's a biopic of Eadweard Muybridge called "Flying Horse," and even more, he's seeking his "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" co-star Benedict Cumberbatch and his 'Harry Potter' pal Ralph Fiennes to star. Penned by Oldman, the movie would tell the story of the photographer instrumental in helping to develop motion pictures. But the movie will focus on the more tabloid part of his life, with Muybridge murdering a theater critic who was had an affair with his wife, and fathered a child in the process. Scandal!

Richard Armitage: 'I wish I could jump out of character; I'd be more popular' (The Independent)

ADAM JACQUES Author Biography

I never like to go out of character when filming starts I fear that if I do, I might not be able to pick it up again. This was particularly the case with the character Thorin Oakenshield [in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit]. He's moody and broody, so people kept their distance from me during the production. I wish I was good at jumping out of character in between takes, as I'd be more popular socially.

Publicity for 'The Hobbit' was relentless I was travelling and doing junkets around the world, being asked the same questions every day for three weeks. Then at the end of the working day I'd have to get down the red carpet. It's pretty hard work. I much prefer being in front of a camera.

I love how Gary Oldman disappears into a role You see a character before you see him; you believe him as he's so invested in that character, such as his George Smiley in Tinker Tailor… That's what I'm striving for.

I'd like to act in a film without special effectsI've spent the past two years in a special FX environment for The Hobbit. I also need to find something where I'm not fighting or inflicting violence on someone, as a lot of the roles I've had, such as Lucas North in Spooks and Guy of Gisborne in Robin Hood, have involved that. I don't know why that's been the case!

Jude Law didn't plan film career added: 4 Mar 2013 // by: Film-News.co.uk Newsdesk

Jude Law didn't plan to have a career in film.

The British actor never expected to make it in Hollywood when he was growing up in South London.

Jude named Daniel Day-Lewis' My Beautiful Laundrette as being the film that changed his ambitions and influenced him to pursue work in the movie industry.

"I never planned a career in film. I don't know anyone who grew up in the 70s in Lewisham who did. It just wasn't realistic. Theatre was. I grew up watching and loving film but it was this other world – movie stars were like Newman and Mitchum and McQueen. And then this amazing crop of actors - Tim Roth, Gary Oldman and Daniel Day-Lewis - came along," Jude revealed to British newspaper the Guardian. "Tim and Gary were round the corner from where I lived. That was very, very, very influential for me. I remember seeing Daniel Day-Lewis in My Beautiful Launderette and thinking: 'Oh, film can be part of my world as well.'"

Gary Oldman, Emily Blunt, Helen Mirren, MOVIE, THE MOVIE (CINEMA BLEND)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=w3NwB9PLxss#!

  Author: Katey Rich

There are a whole lot of silly Oscar night traditions to choose from, from the opening song-and-dance to the Best Song performances to the "shocked" speeches from people everyone knew would be winning. But I'd like to add a pretty recent tradition to the list: Jimmy Kimmel's "Movie the Movie." The ABC late night host will have the prime post-Oscar slot again this year, and will be back with the parody that set the Internet on fire after last year's Oscars. Except, in the grand tradition of movies, it's not just a new parody: it's a sequel. Welcome to Movie The Movie: 2V.

Tom Hardy: Lawless Reviewed: Dark & Haunting With Flawless Lead Performances - By Rayne Wilson (SABOTAGE TIMES)

From the director of ‘The Road’, comes this prohibition-set drama following the lives of three brothers running a bootlegging business. Refusing to allocate a portion of their earnings to the corrupt authorities earns them the wrath of ‘special agent’ Charlie Rakes (played by an unrecognisable Guy Pearce) whose flagrant disregard for the law sees tensions rise between the law force and the locals.

There are a lot of different narrative strands at work here, but the plot tends to alternate between brooding elder brother Forest Bondurant (Tom Hardy) and runt of the litter youngest brother Jack (Shia LaBeouf) and they are arguable front runners in a cast of superb actors. As the enigmatic Forest, the unspoken head of the household, Hardy possesses an almost ageless quality, which makes him unbelievably interesting to watch. Forest is a character steeped in mystery and legend and Hillcoat cleverly plays on this through a combination of camera work and Hardy’s intuitive performance.

Hardy is shot in such a way as to emphasise his formidable size and youthful good looks yet he carries himself with a kind of weary fatigue and communicates through a series of unintelligible grunts, making it impossible to deduce his age and contributing to the mystical aura that surrounds him. Parts of his dialogue are lost in the garbled thickness of his southern drawl, but you almost get the sense that you don’t need to understand him, as his hulking physicality is such an imposing presence.

Despite the attention paid to Jack’s coming of age as he attempts to ape his brothers and become more involved in the family business, the viewer can’t help but pine for Hardy’s presence when he is off-screen. This is not to discount LaBeouf’s fine portrayal of youngest brother Frank; he turns in a very capable performance and this film is as much a coming of age story as it is an insight into the hardships of living through the Depression. However, Hardy is an acting beast and LaBeouf is smart to simply compliment his performance rather than try to counter it. You get a real sense of the brotherly camaraderie between them and Hillcoat does a superb job of communicating this without obvious exposition, instead opting to use simple yet effective visual imagery.

The Dark Knight Rises official running time revealed, Liam Neeson confirmed as key cast member By David Bentley on July 3, 2012 3:02 PM (COVENTRY TELEGRAPH)

Confirming the involvement of Liam Neeson as a key part of the production, the cast confirmed by the BBFC is: Christian Bale, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Liam Neeson, Anne Hathaway, Marion Cotillard, Aidan Gillen, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Matthew Modine, Juno Temple and Tom Conti.

Neeson's character Ra's al Ghul seemingly died in a train crash at the end of Batman Begins, so it's unclear how he features in the story but the actor has claimed he was only on set for a few hours, so it may be just a flashback.

The Dark Knight Rises hits cinemas on July 20.
