Michael Fassbender’s movie magic is award-worthy

LARNE TIMES

Larne man Mike Collins with his famous nephew, actor Michael Fassbender. INLT-23-714-con

Michael Fassbender’s Larne uncle says it is only a matter of time before his famous nephew wins a major award.

Speaking exclusively to The Times the day after he saw his nephew star as Magneto in the new Xmen movie Days of Future Past, local man Mike Collins stated: “I took my son to see Xmen last night.

“To be honest, I’m not a big Xmen fan, but the movie I saw last night was brilliant.”

The most recent installation in the Xmen blockbuster franchise sees Xmen characters from the past and present unite to fight for the survival of their species.

Michael and his parents

Michael Fassbender has a special link to Larne, as his mother Adele is from the area and he regularly visited his grandparents at the town’s Wellington Parade during his childhood.

Michael was born in Germany, his father’s native land, before his family moved to Kilarney.

His uncle Mike recalled: “Michael would have been here on numerous occasions – Christmas, family get togethers.

“The last time he was in Larne would have been four years ago for my wedding reception at Ballygally castle.

Michael and his dad

“He always wanted to be an actor, since he was very young – since primary and secondary school he was always involved in some form of acting and drama.

“He was also a bit of a musician and played everything, including the guitar, which he still plays.”

Mike says that the family is very proud of their famous son, who worked ‘very, very hard‘ to make it in Hollywood.

He continued: “I thought he was brilliant in 12 Years A Slave and in Hunger.

“He has had some brilliant roles, but 12 Years A Slave is probably my favourite.

FIRST LOOK: Michael Fassbender as glowering Macbeth with Marion Cotillard as his blood-stained Lady

'And there is an end, but now they rise again': Michael Fassbender will hit our screens as Shakespeare's damned usurper next year

There couldn't be a more salivating prospect than Michael Fassbender as Shakespeare's aspirant Macbeth and Marion Cotillard as his manipulative Lady.

And a first look at the posters for the 2015 movie version of the cursed Scottish play - directed by Justin Kurzel - does nothing to quell the appetite

'It’s the first time I’ve played a character with no light, total darkness,' Marion Cotillard told Variety recently of playing Lady Macbeth.

'And when she loses control … I’m affected by the character I live with when I’m shooting, so I lost control of everything, like her, and it was really hard to handle.'

She also told The Independent: 'The depth of humanity in her – but it’s all driven away by fear and despair. How you do things to have a better life – but when they are against humanity, you will fail.'

And she has faith in her co-star: 'I saw a lot of movies [Fassbender] was in, and I have the feeling he’s reached another level here.

'When you start a scene and you don’t really know where you’re going to go, that’s a roller-coaster. Many times I was surprised by what he does in this movie, and this is priceless.'

Tough gig: Cotillard has previously said portraying Lady Macbeth has been a challenge in that she has never played a character with 'total darkness' before

This upcoming version of Macbeth not only stars Fassbender (X-Men: First Class, Hunger) and Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose), but is being directed by Justin Kurzel, who directed the very heavy Snowtown Murders, which if you haven’t seen, you need to. These first couple of images are gorgeous and I can’t wait to see some footage.

Michael Fassbender in Glamour Italia

OH NO THEY DIDN'T
2:46 pm - 02/05/2014

Michael Fassbender laughs once during our meeting. At the end. Listen to the questions carefully and fondles his beard of a few days. Then he fixed his gaze and bares. He manages well, not just metaphorically. Since he stripped to get into the role of the tormented sex addict of Shame, in 2011, became a planetary object of desire. And now comes The Counselor - The Prosecutor, Ridley Scott, the story of a lawyer who enters into a dirty turnover that cost him dearly.

The screenplay is by the famous writer Cormac McCarthy. What did you think while reading it?
I liked the description of the protagonists, motivated by greed, while around them people live in hardship. That is, the lives of poor people are on sale, according to the desire for some intent on accumulating wealth: the villa with pool, the Bentley, a diamond for his girlfriend. Everything to gain acceptance, respect, love.

You are insensitive to yourself?
I'm off to certain environments. My home is in London, not in Hollywood. And, when I work, I concentrate on what happens on the set. I lead a normal life. I am fortunate to be able to go where I want.

But then come back always to interpret amoral characters.
I don't like the positive, reassuring figures. Prefer to explore human frailties through provocative, roles that push the viewer to wonder about himself. For me this is the task of art and cinema.

Is there anything in particular that you can not stand?
The ease with which everyone is ready to make judgments. It seems to be back at the prejudices of the 50s. Perhaps the fault is also of the Internet and social media, which remove any filter to the way we communicate.

In various scenes of the movie you cry.
In the script was not expected, the tears came so unexpectedly, after that I relaxed. Yes, I am one who gets excited easily. I am moved by the grand gestures of affection or cruelty. And I cry when I am disappointed by my behavior.

What do you crave when you were a child?
To do everything that I saw in the TV series. The private investigator, but also the pilot or the stuntman, since I love the speed. Then I decided to put on a heavy metal band. Came home from school and I was the guitar for hours. One day, however, I heard a friend: I realised that he had what it takes, I don't. So I let it go.

MICHAEL FASSBENDER - 12 YEARS A SLAVE - Oscars 2014 Cheat Sheet: Best Supporting Actor

WHY HE WILL WIN

1. He’s widely acknowledged as one of the best young actors working today, and this is just the latest in a series of flawless performances – particularly with Steve McQueen, who also directed him in Shame and Hunger.

2. He has the matching BAFTA and SAG nominations – and rightly so. Without Fassbender’s Epps to put an inhuman face on slave ownership, the film would not have worked half as well.

3. The Academy failed to nominate him for Shame or Hunger. Frankly, they owe him.

WHY HE WON'T WIN

1. There’s such a thing as an embarrassment of riches. It hardly seems fair to give him an Oscar as well as everything else.

2. Leto has won everything going so far, so it may be that Fassbender will be overlooked this year. And the voters may shrug and assume he has yet more great performances in him to come.

3. The Academy failed to nominate him for Shame or Hunger. Maybe they just don’t like him.

'The hype around one man's anatomy is ludicrous' - Michael Fassbender on nudity

Michael Fassbender has laughed off his status as a sex symbol.

The Irish actor is currently starring in 12 Years a Slave, the true story of free man Solomon Northup who was tricked and sold into slavery in 1841.

Michael plays the unsavoury character of Edwin Epps in the movie, which sees a departure from the handsome leading men he usually portrays.

Despite being voted number eight in Empire magazine's 100 Sexiest Movie Stars last year, his sex symbol status is of no importance to Michael.

"I don't see myself as a pin-up. I don't dwell on it. That sort of information isn't good for my own head," he told British magazine GQ.

Michael isn't shy when it comes to nude scenes and has stripped off in a number of roles.

In fact the 36-year-old actor finds people's reservations about nudity funny.

"I mean half the population has one between our legs and the other half has something else. It's weird how there seems to be so much hype around one man's piece of anatomy. It's just ludicrous, really!" he laughed.

Michael Fassbender: I'm no pin-up

CONTACT MUSIC
by Bang Showbiz | 03 January 2014

Michael Fassbender doesn't see himself as a sex symbol.

The '12 Years A Slave' star - who claimed he was flattered to be named the eighth sexiest male movie star worldwide in a poll last year - doesn't believe he's attractive but tries not to think about how much female attention he gets because it would turn him vain.

He said: ''I don't see myself as a pin-up. I don't dwell on it. That sort of information isn't good for my own head.''

The 36-year-old actor hit the headlines in 2011 for his revealing role in 'Shame', which saw him strip off and show his manhood, and even George Clooney thanked him on stage at the Golden Globe Awards in 2012 for taking over the ''frontal-nudity responsibility''.

However, Fassbender sometimes wishes the jokes and sexual remarks about the size of his genitals would stop, but he is adamant he would take on a nudity role again if he was asked.

Michael Fassbender reveals that he was close to tears on the set of 12 Years A Slave after scene with a child actor

Michael Fassbender's emotional experience on 12 Years A Slave set

Michael Fassbender has revealed that he became quite emotional following a scene with a child actor.

Fassbender, who plays plantation owner Edwin Epps in the film, admitted he had a ‘lump in his throat’ when he spoke to the youngster, who plays the daughter of slave Patsey.

He told Empire: ‘She was so sweet, that little girl, because we did the scene and I come running out, screaming and yelling, and she got really frightened and started crying.

‘I was like “This is make-believe, we were playing pretend and everything’s OK” and we took her out of the scene.

‘After that I was getting ready to go back into the scene again and I was…getting into the headspace, pacing around a bit and she stood in the doorway. And she goes “Are you OK?”’

Oscar 2014 Best Supporting Actor Nominations Predictions: Michael Fassbender, Jared Leto, Tom Hanks, Bradley Cooper Lead Crowded Field

LATINOS POST
By Francisco Salazar | First Posted: Nov 14, 2013 12:19 AM EST

The Best Supporting Actor category continues to be an enigma as the category amasses more potential nominees.

Michael Fassbender is still seemingly leading the Best Supporting Actor race for his work on "12 Years A Slave." The actor is one of the most respected performers working in Hollywood and after the Academy ignored his acclaimed performance in "Shame" it is almost impossible to believe that Fassbender will not be nominated. Additionally, he has the advantage considering the film is the front-runner to win Best Picture.

Jared Leto continues to get buzz for his role in "Dallas Buyers Club." Leto is unrecognizable in his performance and the fact that he lost weight for the role could be helpful in claiming an Academy Award. While he may not win, Leto is a lock for a nomination.

The rest of the candidates are still only possibilities and long-shots. Among them are Barkhad Abdi ("Captain Phillips"), Chris Cooper ("August: Osage County") and Tom Hanks ("Saving Mr. Banks"). Abdi is a newcomer and that alone can hurt his chances, while Cooper's role is not receiving much buzz from pundits. Meanwhile, Hanks is in "Captain Phillips" as well, and the Academy may want to nominate another actor instead of giving Hanks two nominations.

British Director Steve McQueen talks about the ‘magic’ of actor Michael Fassbender, the impact of slavery on his own family and Oscar campaigning

Actor Michael Fassbender has a strange kind of magic about him, says Director Steve McQueen that leaves people in tears when he finishes a scene.

The director was speaking on The Green Room following the London Premiere of his new film 12 Years A Slave.

It is the third time the Irish-German actor and director have collaborated on film (previous films include Hunger and Shame) and it’s a relationship McQueen values highly.

“I value our relationship more than a lot of things about life, I value it tremendously. He’s an artist, an amazing artist. He’s a force to be reckoned with.”

Murmurings of Oscar nominations are already in the air, although Fassbender who was Oscar nominated for his performance in McQueen’s earlier film Shame, says he won’t be playing the Oscar game this time around.

Steve McQueen agrees with Fassbender’s stance saying he doesn't plan to campaign for the Oscars either.

“I’m not campaigning. Michael’s campaign is on screen. That’s Michael Fassbender’s Oscar Campaign. There’s nothing much more to say. He’s done his thing, that’s it.”

Listen here for the full interview with Director Steve McQueen and Actor Chiwetel Ejiofor on The Green Room with Orla Barry

Michael Fassbender Found Human Side To 12 Years A Slave Character

FEMALE FIRST
September 18, 2013

Michael Fassbender says he tried to find the 'human being' in his 12 Years A Slave character.

12 Years A Slave has been receiving critical acclaim on the festival circuit as Steve McQueen is back in the director's chair.

Fassbender takes on the role of evil slave owner Edwin Epps, and the actor says he tried to look past his villainous nature.

Speaking to Flicks and Bits the actor said: "He's a human being, so I approached him with a very human touch," he recalled. "I tried to find his voice first. I worked with a lot of different tapes and our dialect coach helped me out a lot."

"It was about finding the human being in [my character] Epps, because obviously what he does is pretty terrible, but... I don't know, there's something in there where I feel a little sorry for him.

"He's a victim of the time as well, in a way. He's in love with [slave] Patsey (Lupita Nyong'o) and he can't deal with it, he thinks, 'How can I be in love with a slave?'

"So he sets about suppressing her and beating her to try to beat it out of himself. So I thought that there was a really amazing humanity in that alone.

Michael Fassbender Talks "Difficult" Rape, Whipping Scenes in 12 Years a Slave, Thanks Brad Pitt for Film

Michael Fassbender

E.
by NATALIE FINN

Michael Fassbender probably wouldn't be surprised to learn that audible sobbing has been heard at screenings of 12 Years a Slave, including from the audience at the drama's premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The German-born actor, in his third collaboration with director Steve McQueen, admits that the film is tough to watch—some parts more than others. And it was no picnic to shoot, either.

"For me, the rape scene was most difficult to film and probably the most difficult to watch was the whipping scene," Fassbender, who plays a sadistic plantation owner, told E! News at the film's press junket.

Lucky for everyone involved with the impressively cast ensemble tear-jerker, for which star Chiwetel Ejiofor is already getting Oscar buzz, they had each other.

"There are heavy, intense moments when you're on set and filming. But we had a lot of support within each other, a lot of respect, a lot of love on that crew and amongst the actors," Fassbender said, "so we were looking after each other, you know."

Brad Pitt has a small role in the film as a Canadian carpenter, but Fassbender credits the actor's role behind the scenes as the one that really brought the based-on-a-true-story 12 Years a Slave to life.

Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Fassbender: 12 Years a Slave: Telluride Review

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
7:04 PM PDT 8/31/2013 by Todd McCarthy

The Bottom Line
A strong, involving, at times overstated telling of an extraordinary life story.

Venue
Telluride Film Festival

Opens
October 18 (Fox Searchlight)

Cast
Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano, Garrett Dillahunt, Paul Giamatti

Director
Steve McQueen

The recent popular revenge fantasy Django Unchained notwithstanding, there have been so few good and strong films about slavery in America that, for this reason alone, 12 Years A Slave stands quite tall. With director Steve McQueen dedicating himself to detailing the “peculiar institution” with as many dreadful particulars as he can, Chiwetel Ejiofor leads a fine cast with a superior performance as the real-life Solomon Northup, a free black man from New York who was kidnapped in 1841 and sold into Southern slavery until being miraculously rescued. Perhaps the nature of the story is such that the film can’t help but be obvious and quite melodramatic at times, but it gets better as it goes along and builds to a moving finish. Despite the upsetting and vivid brutality, Fox Searchlight has a winner here that will generate copious media coverage, rivet the attention of the black public, stir much talk in political and educational circles and appeal to film audiences who crave something serious and different.

Northup published a memoir of his 12-year nightmare in 1853, the year after Uncle Tom’s Cabin came out, and it was so successful that he went on to participate in two stage adaptations. The book dropped from sight in the 20th century, but the movie tie-in will certainly reestablish its virtually unique status as a work by an educated free man who managed to return from slavery. British director McQueen, whose striking first two features, Hunger and Shame, remained restricted to the art film world, paints on a much bigger canvas and with a much broader brush here, befitting a subject that defined the structure of American society before the Civil War. The nature of the outrage, villainy and human suffering on display is entirely genuine if also familiar, but it is never far removed from the direct experiences of Northup, who, near the beginning of his ordeal, decides, “I don’t want to survive, I want to live.”

MICHAEL FASSBENDER WINS FAN POLL FOR BATMAN ROLE (& Centurion bloopers)

Michael Fassbender wins fan poll for Batman role

August 13, 2013

After Zack Snyder announced that the Man of Steel sequel would feature both Batman and Superman, the Internet fandom has been going crazy to try to find the next Batman.

We already know that no matter how much money he's offered, it's very unlikely that Christian Bale will reprise his role as the caped crusader. If that's the case, then whoever plays Batman in this next movie will very much figure into DC's larger plan, including a rumored Justice League film.

Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Fassbender: NOLA-shot '12 Years a Slave' named opening-night selection of 2013 New Orleans Film Festival

Benedict Cumberbatch, left, and Chiwetel Ejifor star in director Steve McQueen's New Orleans-shot adaptation of 'Twelve Years a Slave.' (Jaap Buitendijk / Fox Searchlight)

Mike Scott, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune

The 2013 New Orleans Film Festival will boast a decidedly local feel when it kicks off its 24th edition on Oct. 10. Director Steve McQueen's locally shot adaptation of "12 Years a Slave" -- starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Fassbender and Brad Pitt -- was named the festival's opening-night selection in an announcement this afternoon (Aug. 12).

McQueen's film, which will be screening more than a week before its limited theatrical release, will be the centerpiece of a red-carpet, opening-night event to be held at the newly renovated Civic Theater on O'Keefe Avenue. McQueen is expected to be among those in attendance.

The announcement was made this afternoon (Aug. 12) by the New Orleans Film Society, which organizes the annual eight-day celebration of film. At the same time, it was announced that director Lily Keber's music documentary "Bayou Maharajah: The Tragic Genius of James Booker" -- about the legendary local piano player / eccentric -- will be the film's closing-night selection.

Film Society Executive Director Jolene Pinder expressed special satisfaction that the films filling both prestigious slots have local roots, in addition to creating early buzz.

"Both of the films were produced in New Orleans and represent the burgeoning film scene in the city," Pinder was quoted as saying in a news release. "We are honored that the New Orleans Film Festival will be the premiere for both films. With these two films bookending the festival, we can showcase both larger productions now calling Louisiana home while also celebrating our indigenous filmmakers."

Michael Fassbender tipped for Oscar glory

HERALD.IE
NICK BRAMHILL – 10 AUGUST 2013 07:00 AM

IRISH actor Michael Fassbender has been tipped to win two Oscar nominations next year – by respected movie bible, Total Film.

Movie experts have predicted that 2014 will be the Year of the Fass in the latest edition of the monthly magazine.

The gifted Kerry-born actor has already impressed critics and cinema audiences for past starring performances in films such as Hunger, Inglorious Basterds, Shame and Prometheus.

But the 36-year-old has yet to earn an Oscar nod for his past leading roles.

However, Total Film writers believe two of his upcoming films, The Counsellor and 12 Years A Slave, will turn out to be serious award-season contenders.

Benedict Cumberbatch: Find Out Why Michael Fassbender And Brad Pitt's Next Movie Is Looking Better Than Ever Author: Katey Rich | published: 2013-06-28 11:49: (CINEMA BLEND)

Find Out Why Michael Fassbender And Brad Pitt's Next Movie Is Looking Better Than Ever image

Whether you caught his previous films Hunger and Shame or only heard all the jokes about Michael Fassbender's penis, there's plenty of reason to look forward to director Steve McQueen's upcoming third film, 12 Years A Slave. It's a huge departure for the visual-artist-turned-director, bringing back Fassbender in a supporting role but primarily focusing on Solomon Northrup, a man played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, who was living as a free black man in pre-Civil War upstate New York when he was kidnapped and forced into slavery. Sure, that's a grim story, but with a cast that includes Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Beasts of the Southern Wild's Quvenzhane Wallis, The Wire's Michael K. Williams and other luminaries, it ought to hit hard.

Now some early buzz confirms our high expectations. Deadline reports that distributor Fox Searchlight has been testing the film and earned fantastic audience response, which has inspired them to give Slave an even better Oscar season release date. It had originally been scheduled for December 27, but now the studio will begin a "limited platform release"-- meaning it will open in a handful of theaters at a time until it's eventually everywhere-- on October 18.

Michael Fassbender to take on MacBeth for director Justin Kurzel April 29, 2013 | Written By: Brad Sturdivant (FLIX 66)

I think every talented actor has to do a Shakespeare movie at some point in their career as a sort of right of passage.  Given that Michael Fassbender is one of the more talented actors working today, it makes perfect sense that he’d tackle Shakespeare and so he’s looking to sign on to star in SNOWTOWN director Justin Kurzel’s take on MACBETH.

Although this version will be spoken in the original language and will take place in the 11th century (like the original play), Kurzel promises a more visceral telling and plenty of epic battle scenes.

Michael Fassbender is attached to play Macbeth in a new version of Shakespeare’s classic, which will be produced by The King’s Speech and Shame producers See Saw.

Snowtown director Justin Kurzel is attached to direct the film, which is expected to shoot later this year. Writers are Todd Louiso and Jacob Koskoff.

The script has been one of the most in-demand ahead of the Cannes Film Festival with a number of sales outfits keen to work on the film.

Development and production backing on the UK-Australian co-production comes from Film4.

The part of Lady Macbeth is currently being cast and talks are underway with at least one Hollywood leading actress.

The production sees Fassbender reunited with Shame producers Iain Canning and Emile Sherman and Film4, with whom the actor worked on Hunger, Shame and the upcoming Frank.

The new take on Shakespeare’s classic - about a ruthlessly ambitious Scottish lord who siezes the throne with the help of his scheming wife and three witches - is set in the 11th century and in the original language.

The script is understood to be a visceral approach to the story including significant battle scenes.

The play has been recently staged in London’s West End starring James McAvoy, who was nominated for an Olivier Award for his turn. Famous film versions include Roman Polanski’s 1971 version and Orson Welles’ from 1948.
