Behind the scenes of Comic Relief’s Love Actually: Andrew Lincoln’s creepy cards return

GUARDIAN
 Tom Lamont
Sunday 12 March 2017 10.00 EDT Last modified on Sunday 12 March 2017 20.10 EDT

Being on the set of a Richard Curtis film is very like being in a Richard Curtis film. Everyone is good-looking and brisk and witty, here in the borrowed London townhouse where the 60-year-old director is shooting a short sequel to his movie Love Actually. Outside in the real world people are angry, at odds, ever more polarised. On Curtis’s closed set, a dungareed world of Lillies and Berties and Cols and Ems, trays of brownies circulate and the chat is about who slept with who once but stayed friends. Hugh Grant is present, roaming around and given licence to be caustic and urbane: “If anyone needs me I’ll be in my lair.” Otherwise the prevailing spirit is level-headedness and sympathy. “Richard likes it,” an assistant says to me, “when people are nice to each other. Plum?”

Curtis is making this short followup to Love Actually in aid of Comic Relief and Red Nose Day, causes he co-founded in the 1980s. Many of the actors from the original have agreed to return, including Grant, Colin Firth, Keira Knightley, Bill Nighy and Liam Neeson; charity tempting them back, after 14 years, to Curtisland, that preposterous and seductive fantasia-Britain that was established in a trilogy of famous romcoms: Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), Notting Hill (1999) and Love Actually (2003). Of the three it was the last, a multi-narrative soup of soppy vignettes, written and directed by Curtis, that went on to have the most prodigious afterlife. Love Actually is now broadcast on TV with metronomic, Bond-movie regularity. In a single week last winter more than 1m copies of the film were sold on DVD in the US. At around the same time, in the UK, Love Actually was voted by the Radio Times “the nation’s favourite Christmas movie”.

On the set of the sequel, Firth ponders the movie’s substantial modern viewership and positions it in the culture somewhere alongside The Sound of Music. Grant, when asked to account for Love Actually’s enduring popularity, assumes his role as resident cynic and grumbles: “It’s unaccountable.”

Grant sips water and tries to catch his breath. He’s just shimmied his way around a bit of the set made up to look like 10 Downing Street, a grand marble staircase behind him hung with photographs of former prime ministers. His photo is among those on the wall, the actor today reprising his role as the Blair-ish PM who in the original film put aside duties of state to woo his secretary, played by Martine McCutcheon. Such is the power of love in a Richard Curtis film that Grant had to dance out his romantic vigour by wiggling up and down the halls of Downing Street to a Girls Aloud song. There’s another dance in the sequel. As with most of the new scenes in Curtis’s followup, an incident or encounter from the first film is referenced, with some sort of twist catching us up on what has happened to the character, a decade and a half on.

Curtis has Grant say something like this when they shoot a press conference scene, next. The fictional PM is asked to give the public his view on the future of world affairs, and with implausible but seductive simplicity (that patented Curtis mix) Grant insists: “Good’s going to win, I’m actually sure of it.” They do the line a few times before an assistant yells for a cut and everybody breaks for lunch. Lamb wraps.

There was a scene in Notting Hill, which also starred Grant, during which his character went along to a movie shoot: he got placed on the sidelines with a pair of headphones so that he could listen in on the actors’ dialogue. In this way he accidentally heard them mutter bitchy secrets to each other. It happens to me in eerie replication one day. A scene is being reset and a prominent actor fills the waiting with wicked chat. There is a dig at an absent castmate. Then the actor ranks by merit some of the films they have made since the last Love Actually, the one they had to be talked into, the “pay-day”. Blushing, absolutely fascinated, I listen for as long as decency and personal ethics allow before turning the volume down.

So there is a little darkness in Curtisland, after all. Commentators on the outside would suggest it has always been there. When Love Actually celebrated a 10th anniversary in 2013, various critical reappraisals appeared. Persuasive cases were made about the movie’s shaky treatment of women, especially. By this point I’d seen Love Actually enough times to have a demented familiarity with its dozen plots (Liam Neeson advising his stepson how to win the girl of his dreams, Alan Rickman cheating on his wife Emma Thompson, Andrew Lincoln declaring himself to the unattainable Keira Knightley by showing up at her doorstep with handwritten signs) but I was never able to watch it through with the same old naivety after reading Lindy West’s furious and brilliant essay for Jezebel. West pointed out how much of the plot depended on women falling in love with their male employers, suggested “Hostile Work Environment: The Movie” as an alternative title, and went as far as likening the romance between Colin Firth’s character and his Portuguese maid, played by Lucia Moniz, to sex trafficking.

Who will be the next James Bond? Latest odds on Tom Hardy, Aidan Turner and Michael Fassbender as bets roll in

THE SUN
By Hannah Shaw
7th March 2017, 10:57 am  Updated: 7th March 2017, 11:31 am

The contest to play James Bond is still anyone’s game with a number of suave men in the running.

While Aidan Turner has been the bookies favourite for quite some time, he is currently being pipped to the post by Tom Hardy and Michael Fassbender.

Sun Bets are currently taking bets on over 50 male actors to take on the role of James Bond as Daniel Craig’s replacement.

The favourite is currently split between Tom Hardy and Michael Fassbender, who both have odds of 11/4.

Trailing behind are War & Peace’s James Norton, Poldark’s Aidan Turner and Luther’s Idris Elba, but what are their chances?

Who’s in the running for the next Bond?

Tom Hardy

Tom Hardy has fuelled the rumour mill by staying quiet when questioned on the role
Age: 39

Sun Bets odds: 11/4

Where do we know him from? Actor Tom Hardy is no stranger to the big screen having appeared recently in Mad Max: Fury Road, The Revenant and Legend.

The British actor has recently appeared in the BBC series Taboo and has fuelled Bond rumours after refusing to comment on whether he would like to take over from Daniel Craig, for fear of jinxing his chance.

Michael Fassbender

Michael Fassbender made his Alien debut in the 2012 prequel, Prometheus
Age: 39

Sun Bets odds: 11/4

Where do we know him from? Fans may recognise Fassbender from 2012 film Prometheus, and the star has hit the big screen again with his role in Assassin’s Creed.

Sun Bets place the actor’s odds at 20/1, however in an interview with GQ Fassbender said: “As an acting role, I think Daniel has done such a cracking job in this age group.

“I think the franchise needs something new.”

James Norton

James Norton made an impression on viewers during his stint on BBCs Happy Valley
Age: 31

Sun Bets odds: 7/2

Where do we know him from? Norton has an impressive accolade of TV credits behind him.

Viewers may recognise James from BBC’s Happy Valley, where he played the role of Tommy Lee Royce.

James has also starred in Granchester, Black Mirror and War & Peace.

Aidan Turner

Aidan has become a sex symbol thanks to his topless action in Poldark
Age: 33

Sun Bets odds: 4/1

Where do we know him from? Most viewers will recognise Aidan as heartthrob Ross Poldark.

Aidan started his career on stage but soon found fame on the big screen after appearing in The Hobbit trilogy.

The 33 year old took the lead in Bond odds back in August, however refused to comment on the rumours at MCM Expo.

UK bookmaker suspends betting on Tom Hiddleston to be James Bond

FOX 411
April 15, 2016

LONDON –  A British bookmaker has suspended betting on British actor Tom Hiddleston to be the next James Bond.

Coral says a flurry of bets in recent days made "The Night Manager" star the 2-1 favorite to replace Daniel Craig to be the next 007. But after a particularly large wager, the odds plummeted and betting was suspended.

Coral says Luther star Idris Elba and Homeland actor Damian Lewis had been Bond front-runners in previous months. But Coral spokeswoman Nicola McGeady, says while earlier in the year "there was a gamble" on those two, nothing has "come close to the recent gamble on Hiddleston."

Watch British Actors Reenact Iconic American Movie Scenes

Keira Knightley and Benedict Cumberbatch Reenact Iconic American Movies

The British are coming – or as anyone in Hollywood has long known, they've already arrived!

Be it Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley or Eddie Redmayne, there has been a British invasion of American movies – and awards ceremonies – over recent years.

That fact is humorously skewered in a cheeky short film for Vanity Fair by London-born photographer Jason Bell, whose work frequently appears in that magazine. (VF's annual Hollywood issue will be available Feb. 5 in digital editions and on newsstands.)

Bell had the idea to shoot an all-U.K. edition of the magazine's annual Hollywood portfolio (whose 30-page portfolio includes 44 English icons this year) after observing that "this British invasion of Hollywood has gotten so out of hand." The short film is cleverly divided into three parts – in the style of a World War II era newsreel – with the first clip showing the Brits "Preparing for War," the second depicting their "Coming to America" to infiltrate the film industry and the final installment, "Victory is Assured."

The name's Elba. Idris Elba: Leaked Sony emails reveal boss Amy Pascal wants British actor to be James Bond

THE DAILY MAIL
By EMMA GLANFIELD FOR MAILONLINE
PUBLISHED: 05:31 EST, 21 December 2014 | UPDATED: 09:48 EST, 21 December 2014

British actor Idris Elba, 42 (left), who has starred in The Wire and Luther, could replace Daniel Craig, 46, (right) as the next James Bond when his contract ends after the next film, if leaked Sony emails are to be believed

British actor Idris Elba could become the next James Bond, according to leaked Sony emails.

Elba, 42, who has starred in The Wire and Luther, could replace Daniel Craig as the next 007 when his contract ends after the next film, if leaked emails are to be believed.

Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal allegedly told a top executive at Columbia Pictures, which distributes the Bond films, that 'Idris should be the next bond'.

It is latest piece of information to emerge from the Sony hacking scandal, which resulted in the cancelling of the Christmas Day release of The Interview.

Hackers threatened 9/11-style terrorist attacks on cinemas showing the comedy about two journalists – played by actors James Franco and Seth Rogen – who are recruited by the CIA to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The federal government confirmed on Wednesday that North Korea was behind the massive hack of Sony, which saw thousands of internal emails leaked.

According to the Daily Beast, an email sent on January 4 from Ms Pascal to Elizabeth Cantillon,
former executive vice president of production for Columbia Pictures, simply said: 'Idris should be the next bond (sic).'

If Elba, from Hackney, east London, did follow in Daniel Craig's footsteps, he would become the first black James Bond. Previous actors to portray 007 on the big screen include Pierce Brosnan, Roger Moore and Sean Connery.

Many have voiced support for Elba to play the British spy, including actor Jamie Foxx who said in an interview earlier this year that he was a big fan of the idea.

Elba himself has also previously expressed desire to play the British spy, telling website Reddit that he would take the role.

'Yes. if it was offered to me, absolutely,' he said.

From Benedict Cumberbatch to Idris Elba, Americans can't resist a suave British man

THE GUARDIAN

Maybe we should blame it on Hugh Grant, that floppy-haired, bumbling star of so many romantic comedies of the 90s and 00s, including Love, Actually (which goes into endless repetition as the holiday season approaches). It just seems like Americans cannot get enough of posh British dudes – though our tastes seem to be changing with the times.

The latest to grace our shores on a regular basis is Tom Hiddleston, most widely know for playing Loki in The Avengers and two Thor movies next to Chris Hemsworth (the pile of Australian muscle is another type Americans love, but that is a whole different study entirely). Hiddleston is slated to star in The Night Manager, a British spy miniseries based on a John le Carré novel, next year for AMC. The London-born actor is sure to set hearts aflame with his classic good looks, upper-class accent, and Eton-bred affectations as well as his ability to negotiate the highest level of espionage.

This seems to be a bit of a divergence from the fey British blokes from the past that we love. While there’s still plenty of love for Colin Firth, he and Grant were the kind of obsequious Brits who would fade into the background and mumble into their shoes about how they felt their souls were connected to Renée Zellweger (an American posing as one of the Queen’s subjects and therefore a cypher for all the American women in the audience). But Hiddleston is playing a spy. He’s a man of action and danger – and those are our new English boyfriends.

Look at Benedict Cumberbatch. Though he disappointed plenty of his ardent fans with news of his recent engagement, he’s still the hottest Brit on American television. He is Sherlock Holmes, a powerful, master-of-the-universe-type who is not only plugged into the highest echelons of British intelligence but also solves all those crimes. We even gave him an American Emmy for his troubles. Cumberbatch also plays Khan in Star Trek – like Loki, a villain and brilliant schemer who holds vast resources of physical and magical power.

And there’s more. We have Jonny Lee Miller on Elementary saving American lives one crime at a time. There’s Idris Elba’s Emmy-nominated turn on Luther, and David Tennant’s cranky Scottish cop on Broadchurch, both modest hits on our shores. There are even some British actors hiding out as Americans, like Rupert Friend as a hard-nosed CIA agent on Homeland and Dominic West as a take-charge romantic lead on The Affair. (Vulture has a handy guide for telling all these high-class types apart.) And let us not forget about Dan Stevens from Downton Abbey, the show which very well might have incited this recent bout of Anglophilia. Though his character Matthew Crawley died in a car crash he is now trying to take his career to the next level by storming Hollywood.

Loki and Heimdall to Appear in 'The Avengers: Age of Ultron' (Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba)

MOVIE PILOT
by Point of Geeks ⋅ Posted on November 2nd, 2014 at 2:32pm

A Point of Geeks report

It seems that we will be in for all sorts of surprises next year when The Avengers: Age of Ultron hits theaters. Fans can expect to see cameos of brand new characters to the Marvel cinematic universe and a few familiar faces will be returning as well.

In an interview with The Telegraph, actor Idris Elba (Thor: The Dark World, The Wire) casually discussed his involvement in the Thor movies and he let it slip that he has recently shot a scene for Age of Ultron:

“Ironically, yesterday I had to…” Elba chuckles. He’s not meant to talk about this, but he clearly enjoys doing things he’s not meant to do. “I’m in Avengers,” he reveals. He means that his Thor character, deity-cum-sentry Heimdall, appears in Age of Ultron, the second installment of the superhero ensemble franchise. “And I’m doing a scene with Chris Hemsworth [who plays Thor] and Tom Hiddleston [Loki], and they’re like, [whispers] – ‘Aren’t you [meant to be] in Ibiza?"

Whoa! Somebody in Marvel Studios is banging their fist down on their desk in anger right now. Tom Hiddleston's Loki has become one of the most popular characters in the Marvel cinematic universe (MCU) and by far the most well-rounded villain. If Marvel wanted this news to be public, they would have certainly made mention of it at last week's huge event where they announced their future projects. Add to the fact that Elba called working on Marvel movies "torture" during the course of the interview and suddenly Heimdall's future in Thor: Ragnarok seems to be sealed.

'He is an amazing actor': Kevin Hart on working with Colin Firth on 'The Intouchables'

SUNDAY EXPRESS
By: Stephanie Takyi
Published: Fri, October 17, 2014

The Pint-sized Philadelphia native, who measures up at just 5ft2, will co-star opposite Colin Firth in a film that tells the story relationship between a wealthy white aristocrat who becomes a quadriplegic after a paragliding accident, and the young "street-tough" black man he hires to take care of him.

Talking about working alongside Colin, Kevin said: "He is an amazing actor, I think that's a movie that did amazing numbers and so we're excited about doing the remake and switching it up.

"I've always been into drama, I just believe that everything happens when it's supposed to. You don't rush it because when you're patient the right thing comes along."

Despite beating the likes of Chris Rock, Jamie Fox and Idris Elba for the coveted role, Kevin denied his ego was inflated after warding off the stiff competition.

"We never know who else is up for it, you just know they've offered it to you. All those guys are so talented so It's not about beating anyone, it's the directors deciding who is right for the part," he told Express.co.uk.

He added: "I guess they thought I was right for it, so I'm happy and thankful that I have the opportunity to do it."

TOM HIDDLESTON'S LATEST JAGUAR COMMERCIAL IS EVEN SEXIER THAN THE FIRST — VIDEO

BUSTLE

April 7, 2014

God dammit Tom Hiddleston, you can’t just do this to us. Tom Hiddleston in one Jaguar commerical was already a lot, but Tom Hiddleston in another Jaguar commerical? Doing some kind of Shakespeare-James Bond mashup of devilish posh Britishness? It might just be too much.

The first of Hiddleston’s campaign with Jaguar came just in time for February’s Super Bowl and included other British poshers like Ben Kingsley and Mark Strong discussing the theory that British people — particularly British dudes with great voices — make the best villains. All it was missing was an Idris Elba and a Benedict Cumberbatch.

Finally, George Clooney and Benedict Cumberbatch Are in the Same Room - Jaguar Britannia Awards (set to air Sunday on BBC America)

POP SUGAR
 by Brittney Stephens

Saturday night's BAFTA LA Jaguar Britannia Awards were a veritable who's who of Hollywood's A-list. Stars like George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Salma Hayek, Sean Penn, and Benedict Cumberbatch all descended on the Beverly Hills Hotel for the event, which celebrates individuals and companies that are dedicated to advancing the entertainment arts.

George, who was also on hand for the screening of his latest project August: Osage County earlier in the day, mingled inside with Julia, Salma, and Sean before accepting his Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for excellence in film, while Benedict took the stage as the recipient of the British artist of the year honor. Other award winners included director Kathryn Bigelow, Sir Ben Kingsley, and Mandela star Idris Elba, who received the Britannia humanitarian award for his work with The Prince's Trust — the charity was founded by Prince Charles and helps disadvantaged youth in the UK.
