Chester actor Tom Hughes has been spotted outside Beverley Minster in Yorkshire filming the next series of ITV hit show Victoria.

The former Upton-by-Chester High School student was seen giggling with fellow actor Jenna Coleman, who plays the eponymous role, as crowds gathered to glimpse the stars during filming.

The couple, who are in an off-screen as well as on-screen relationship, star as Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in the drama which reeled in 7.7 million viewers last year.

Tom, the patron of city youth theatre Jigsaw, brought Jenna to Chester over the Christmas period, and they were spotted walking in the centre of town on Boxing Day.

One onlooker said: “Jenna Coleman and Tom Hughes were arm in arm as Victoria and Prince Albert, there was quite a bit of chemistry between them, they were looking at each other and laughing and giggling.

“They were rehearsing for the scene and kept coming out of the Minster to get into a carriage outside.

As voting opens on the National Television Awards 2015 longlist, there are more than enough mouth-watering tussles in prospect before the shortlist is announced in January.

First up is the battle of the Sherlock actors with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman joining a crowded field of fifty-plus hopefuls in the best drama performance category.

Other names in the frame include Peter Capaldi who is competing against Jenna Coleman – AKA the Doctor’s companion Clara Oswald – to make the shortlist for the same award. Happy Valley’s Sarah Lancashire, Cilla star Sheridan Smith and Last Tango in Halifax pair Sir Derek Jacobi and Anne Reid are also among the string of names in a particularly competitive longlist.

Another set of TV colleagues will be battling it out for the entertainment presenter prize with new Strictly Come Dancing pairing Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly among 24 nominees on the longlist. Also included is Daly’s husband Vernon Kay and Ant & Dec who have walked away with the award for the last 13 years.

Over in the drama category, Doctor Who and Sherlock are bidding for a nomination, up against Line of Duty, New Tricks, Downton Abbey and Happy Valley.

Death Comes to Pemberley: Matthew Rhys on Darcy and billowing shirts

BBC One's 'Death Comes to Pemberley'

Get ready for a whole new Darcy - The Americans star Matthew Rhys plays literature's most iconic lover (sorry, Heathcliff) in BBC One's new three-part drama Death Comes to Pemberley.

Based on the novel by PD James, Death Comes to Pemberley is part Pride and Prejudice sequel, part murder-mystery and also stars Anna Maxwell Martin, Matthew Goode and Doctor Who's Jenna Coleman.

On set, Rhys opened up about stepping into Colin Firth's shoes - or rather donning his shirt - and reveals why his is a very different Darcy...

Matthew is slightly jealous of his co-star Matthew Goode...

"He's got it all - he's got the rock star looks, the rock star attitude, hollow legs, vast knowledge. He's like Stephen Fry - he knows something about everything... he actually knows a lot about everything.

"He's got that voice. He gets the accent for free - I feel like a complete fake. He's like Rik Mayall playing Flashheart."

Matthew was terrified of following Colin Firth as Darcy...

"It's sort of terrifying - I didn't realize the reaction would be so strong. The book and those characters mean such a great amount to so many people. They have this incredible connection and relationship with those characters, who they should be and how they should be played.

"Colin and Jennifer [Ehle] sort of nailed it. Matthew Macfadyen did brilliantly [in the 2005 film], but he was held up in comparison as well. It's scary to play those slightly iconic characters – the ones that people have that relationship with."
