The human movie spoiler returns. Sean Bean, next to be seen on the big screen in The Wachowskis' delayed Jupiter Ascending, has landed a role in Ridley Scott's upcoming adaptation of Andy Weir's book, The Martian.

Bean joins a cast that includes Matt Damon, Jeff Daniels, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Kristen Wiig, and Jessica Chastain. And he'll be taking on the role of NASA's flight director in the movie. Having read the book over the past week, unless there's a significant detour taking with the screenplay, this role is going to offer something radically different for Bean: survival chances.

Sean Bean and Channing Tatum are 'Jupiter Ascending' with the Wachowskis (PRIDE SOURCE)

The crazy, heart-on-its-sleeve sci-fi epic "Cloud Atlas" didn't get the kind of love Andy and Lana Wachowski were looking for, but their latest project, "Jupiter Ascending," is reported to be much more like their mega-successful "Matrix" trilogy (and that's good for everyone's bottom line in the long run, since "Atlas" made about 35 cents at the box office). Of course, that doesn't mean anybody can adequately explain the new film's plot, which involves genetic superbeings who've been bred with animal DNA and the bounty hunters whose job it is to track them. But no matter, the Wachowskis are never boring, as though their own genetics were incapable of something so routine. It can be about anything, really, and nobody will accuse them of slacking.

Sean Bean to co-star in the Wachowskis' Jupiter Ascending as a guy who doesn't die for at least a little while (AV CLUB)

Sean Bean, annoyed with the tedium of momentarily not being dead.

By Sean O'Neal February 6, 2013

Fresh off his casting in TNT’s Legends as a guy who is probably alive for at least a reasonable amount of time, Sean Bean has landed a role in Jupiter Ascending, the next top-secret and likely a little goofy sci-fi project from Lana and Andy Wachowski. Bean joins previously confirmed stars Mila Kunis, as—according to the typically convoluted plot description that looks terrible when it's all written out like this—a Russian immigrant cleaning lady who shares the same DNA with the Queen of the Universe, and Channing Tatum as the bounty hunter the Queen dispatches to kill Kunis, only to fall in love with her, Snow White-style-but-in-space.
