Keira Knightley and husband James Righton meet her mum Sharman Macdonald for a shopping trip in London

Three's a crowd: Keira and husband James met up with Keira's mum for the trip, Sharman MacDonald

Sometimes in-laws can be a tricky thing to negotiate being a newlywed.

This didn't seem to be the case for Klaxons keyboardist James Righton, as he held new wife Keria Knightley's hand on a shopping trip accompanied by her mother, Sharman Macdonald.

The three seemed happy in each others company during a trip to the shops in north London on Tuesday.

Keira previously opened up to Harpers Bazaar about how liberating she has found marriage.
She said: ‘These words that you think beforehand, “That’s the reason I’ll never do it”… those words that you see as completely negative, and you suddenly see them as being incredibly positive, and that’s actually quite liberating and quite nice.’

Meanwhile, Keira is appearing alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in wartime drama The Imitation Game later this year. She is also stars in the film Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit alongside Chris Pine, Kenneth Branagh and Kevin Costner.

Keira plays Ryan’s love interest Cathy in the fifth film in the Jack Ryan franchise, in which Jack (Chris Pine) finds evidence of an imminent terrorist attack and economic catastrophe.

Henry Cavill: Is Man Of Steel an Oscar contender?

Could Henry Cavill pick up the Best Actor award at the 2013 Oscars? No.

YAHOO
By Gregory Wakeman | Yahoo Contributor Network – Wed, Dec 18, 2013 17:24 GMT

Gravity,' 'Inside Llewyn Davis' and '12 Years A Slave,' have wowed critics and audiences alike over the last 12 months to almost universal levels of acclaim. But this hasn't stopped 'Man Of Steel', despite its comparatively mixed reception, from launching its own For Your Consideration page ahead of the upcoming awards season.

Warner Bros. are now hoping that it will compete in a number of categories at the Critics Choice, Golden Globes, Writer & Directors Guild of America and Academy Awards ceremonies over the next few months.

These include the Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Film Editing, Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects, Best Costume Design, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling sections.

They also fancy a dabble in the acting sections too, with Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishbourne and Russell Crowe all expected to contest in these sections.

But what chance does it have of actually competing for any of these accolades?

Personally, I can't see 'Man Of Steel' stemming the snobbish tide that has seen superheroes ignored by the Academy Awards and its various competitors over the last 13 years.

Since 'X-Men' legitimised the genre in 2000, 38 films have received just 22 nominations at the Oscars, going on to win a paltry 3 awards. And most of them were for the less respected gongs too.

The only successes came courtesy of 'The Dark Knight's' Sound Editing, Visual Effects and Heath Ledger's iconic portrayal as The Joker, which, even though it was obviously brilliant, rode a sympathetic wave to glory a year after his untimely passing. This is despite the fact that superheroes have dominated the cinematic landscape over the last decade and a half.

Spy games are a family affair in the new international trailer for Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. Chris Pine and Keira Knightley's marriage gets wrapped up in a complex web of international spy intrigue, and spy intrigue in Hollywood means a lot of stuff getting shot at and blown up.

CIA analyst and desk jockey Jack Ryan (Pine) must go operational to stop the nefarious plans of Viktor Cherevin (Kenneth Branagh), whose Russian accent tells you he's the bad guy behind all of the global corporate evil going on. Kevin Costner plays Jack's steely CIA handler.

COLIN FIRTH, BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH: The Railway Man ticketed for Boxing Day, August: Osage County on January 2 By Don Groves

The producers and distributors of The Railway Man are showing great faith in the drama starring Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman by scheduling it for December 26, arguably the most competitive date in the calendar.

Directed by Jonathan Teplitzky, the film is based on a memoir by Eric Lomax, who, as a prisoner-of-war was forced to work on the construction of the Thai/Burma railway during WW2. Years later he confronted the Japanese soldier who tormented him.

The Australia/UK co-production had been due to open on October 24. Transmission Films announced the new release date today, which means it will compete with a raft of other openers including The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Ben Stiller’s comedy/drama The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Alexander Payne’s Nebraska, Stephen Frears’ Philomena, Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave and Chilean director Sebastián Lelio’s Gloria.

On January 2 the competition will further intensify with the debuts of the spy saga Jack Ryan, which stars Keira Knightley, Chris Pine and Kevin Costner, Walking With Dinosaurs and August: Osage County, which features Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep and Juliette Lewis.

The Railway Man producer Chris Brown has full confidence in its prospects of drawing audiences on Boxing Day, telling IF, “It’s a very, very powerful film with extraordinary performances. If you want counter-programming to the post-Christmas fare, that’s the place to put it.”

Henry Cavill: Destined for greatness By Jenny Cooney Carrillo June 21, 2013, 12:01 a.m. (THE BORDER MAIL)

English actor Henry Cavill is charming, polite and looks like a supermodel with his chiselled cheekbones, dimpled chin and the sleeves of his white cotton shirt rolled up to his elbows to reveal some of the muscles he created to play Superman in the coming blockbuster Man of Steel. The 30-year-old British actor appears to be so earnest and humble, in fact, that you start wondering if anybody could really be this much of a nice guy.

Man of Steel director Zack Snyder (whose credits include 300 and Watchmen) thinks so. "What you see is what you get with Henry," the filmmaker says. "He is a kind guy. The funny thing about him is I think because he comes from a military family and his brothers are in the military, this idea of service – the kind of service Superman must take on – is not foreign to him, so it's not like a thing he has to put on, like, 'In this scene, I care?'

"He's also not a complainer. I had him filming in winter on a heliport in Vancouver with no shirt on and we had to spray him with water for take after take against a freezing wind and he never said a thing. It wasn't until his trainer said, 'Henry will literally fall down before he will say anything, but you've got to give him a break,' that I realised he wasn't a machine."

In the newest movie adaptation of the iconic character created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster in the 1938 Action Comics series, adoptive parents Martha (Diane Lane) and Jonathan (Kevin Costner) have taught Clark Kent (Cavill) to hide his true identity, fearful that mankind isn't ready to embrace an alien on Earth. Though absent for all Clark's young life, it falls to his biological father Jor-El (Russell Crowe), who comes to him through virtual computer technology, to educate him on his destiny as the last son of that planet. But when General Zod (Michael Shannon) arrives from Krypton, Superman decides he must help humans defend their planet.

"I think the world is ready for a new Superman, and what is different about this one is that there's a heavy grounding in reality," Cavill says. "Yes, it's a fantastic story in the sense that there's this alien being with powers far beyond anything we've ever experienced as humankind, but how does he feel about that? How does he feel about having grown up being so different and not knowing what he is and why he is and who he is? And is the world going to be OK with his existence when they find out? People get upset about the tiniest of differences with religion and race; imagine if you are so different that you are impossible to even conceive. That must be a scary prospect."

HENRY CAVILL: Box office report: 'Man of Steel' scores super $125.1 million debut, breaks June record by Grady Smith (ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY)

man-of-steel-09.jpg

Faster than a speeding bullet, Warner Bros.’ $225 million franchise reboot Man of Steel has become a box office behemoth.

The superhero film began its run with a massive $125.1 million ($113.1 million over the traditional weekend, $12 million from corporate screening programs on Thursday), breaking the record for the biggest June opening weekend ever, ahead of Toy Story 3‘s $110.3 million bow in 2010.  Among 2013 films, Man of Steel had the second best debut of the year behind Iron Man 3, which started with $174.1 million in May.

Man of Steel garnered a fantastic $29,731 per theater average from its 4,207 locations. The film grossed $13.3 million in IMAX theaters, and 41% of its business came from 3D ticket sales. Audiences were 56 percent male and 44 percent female, a more even gender distribution than Iron Man 3, which had a 61/39 percent male/female split on opening weekend. The dashing looks of Henry Cavill (and Amy Adams’ appeal) no doubt helped Man of Steel play well with women. Reviews were mixed, but crowds issued the film a strong “A-” CinemaScore.

For Cavill, Adams, and the rest of the cast — which includes Russell Crowe, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Laurence Fishburne, and Michael Shannon — Man of Steel became their best ever opening weekend. The same goes for director Zack Snyder, who formerly saw gigantic numbers when 300 bowed with $70.9 million in 2007.

Man of Steel also clobbered the debut of 2006′s Superman Returns, which opened with $52.5 million and earned $200 million domestically against a $270 million budget. Widely considered a box office misfire, Superman Returns did not, in fact, return. In about one week, Man of Steel will likely have surpassed that film’s domestic total.

The news couldn’t be better for Warner Bros., which — with the exceptions of The Great Gatsby and 42 — has badly struggled at the box office in 2013. Films like Jack the Giant Slayer, The Hangover Part III, Beautiful Creatures, Bullet to the Head, and The Incredible Burt Wonderstone have massively under-performed at the box office, so Man of Steel‘s success is a welcome change. “We’re thrilled,” says Dan Fellman, the studio’s president of domestic distribution, “and it will fly through the summer. We’re going to have legs on this film.”

Fellman also notes that Man of Steel‘s success brings Warner Bros. and DC Comics one step closer to creating a Justice League franchise that might rival Marvel/Disney’s Avengers. The exec wouldn’t confirm whether Henry Cavill has already been contracted to star in Justice League films, though he did coyly remark, “Henry will be around for a while.”

Internationally, Man of Steel soared with $71.6 million in its first weekend, including $17.6 million in the United Kingdom and $9.8 million in Mexico. The film has yet to open in a number of large markets, but it’s already clear that it will easily outdo Superman Returns $191 million international haul.

SUPERMAN FLYING HIGH WORLDWIDE: ‘Man Of Steel’ Opens With $21M Late Shows; Begins Global Release With Asian Records (DEADLINE HOLLYWOOD)

By NIKKI FINKE,
 Editor in Chief | Friday June 14, 2013 @ 7:26am PDT

FRIDAY 7 AM UPDATE: Not even torrential downpours in NYC could dampen enthusiastic crowds forming long lines for Thursday late shows. Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures just announced its hotly anticipated Man Of Steel opened with a midnight show of $9 million

Combined with $12M from a corporate group sale screening program at 7 PM, this third Superman franchise begins its North American run with a cume of $21M. “Off to a flying start!!!” A studio exec gushed to me just now. The number ranks 7th among late show records, behind only the Harry Potter and Twilight franchises, but ahead of The Hunger Games. It’s also the all-time highest superhero late show record, surpassing The Avengers’ remarkable $18.7M and The Dark Knight‘s $18.5M.

The more equal comparison would be June 2005′s Batman Begins which was the first of the trilogy and grossed $1.6M at midnight while June 2006′s Superman Returns reboot made $4.9M and July 2012′s The Amazing Spider-Man redo earned $7.5M. Of course, any such record must come with an asterisk because Hollywood studios recently have interpreted ‘midnights’ as beginning at 7 PM Thursday through midnight and sometimes into early dawn. So that prevents any accurate movie-to-movie direct comparison of late show grosses. IMAX hauled in $1.6M domestic from Man Of Steel late shows from 327 North American locations.

This third Superman franchise goes wide today in a whopping 4,207 locations which is the 2nd widest release ever for a non-sequel: 850 are 2D only, and the remaining venues will play in 3D with a 2D component. Tracking has ranged from Warner Bros’ lowball $80sM aimed a managing expectations to rival studio projections around $95M-$100M. According to both fandango and MovieTickets.com, domestic advance ticket sales accounted for over 85% of total daily transactions Thursday and today. (“That percentage would have been higher if it weren’t for This Is The End doing 7% of sales today,” says Fandango’s Harry Medved.) Still, even with a longish running time of two hours and 23 minutes, the Chris Nolan-Zack Snyder-David S. Goyer-Henry Cavill tentpole Man Of Steel could pack an unexpectedly stronger punch because of the 3D premium and immense wannasee.

It’s almost guaranteed to set a new opening weekend record for the month of June. Superman’s last big screen outing was Superman Returns with a very mediocre five-day opening of $84.6M that stopped Warner Bros from ordering up a sequel. But it scored higher positive reviews of 75% on Rotten Tomatoes than Man Of Steel‘s surprisingly middling 58% seven years later. Then again, this is a critics-proof pic after it took Christopher Nolan’s involvement to make Superman cool again (finally)  even though it’s a feel-good movie where the man of steel must save the day against Michael Shannon’s villainous General Zod. And the studio’s masterful marketing campaign filled with mystery (that first teaser barely featured the Metropolis Marvel) really caught the imagination of anyone ever enamored of one of the most popular DC Comics characters ever.

Review: Man of Steel “Man of Steel is, by far, the best Superman movie ever made.” June 10th, 2013 William Bibbiani (CRAVE ONLINE) SPOILERS!

Man of Steel

Man of Steel is a movie we need right now, and while normally such blanket statements refer to films of great portent or contemporary significance, I’m not convinced that Man of Steel is either of those things, not really. It’s a remarkable piece of popcorn entertainment with a few lofty issues on its mind that are simply expressed beautifully throughout the film. It’s an impressive retelling of a story that is generations old, and that somehow feels fresh here, without sacrificing the greatness that began with Action Comics #1. It could, to use the common parlance, be referred to as “awesome.” But awesome no longer means “awesome.” Awesome means “strikingly cool.” Man of Steel is awesome in that it inspires a sense of genuine awe. That, dear readers, is something of value by its lonesome

The experience that individuals will have watching Man of Steel may vary, but what I suspect most people – whether they love the film or hate it – will take away from Zack Snyder’s movie is its utter bigness. The story is told clearly, with character and personality, as all the best movies are. But few of the best movies are told with this sense of mighty scale. It’s not enough that – as he often does in Superman stories – Pa Kent dies at a crucial turning point in Clark Kent’s life. In Man of Steel he can only be swept into a tornado eating away Smallville, KS. Spoken aloud, or read in print, the half-mad plot point might even seem like a joke, but to sit and behold it on a theatrical screen, mouth open, taking it seriously because you care enough about the characters to do so, elevates Man of Steel to true greatness.

Awe-inspiring and, by far, the best Superman movie ever made, Man of Steel may not present a new standard for epic filmmaking. But it certainly evokes a grandeur rarely attempted on the big screen anymore, and achieves on a level greater than most other cinematic epics. It’s the Superman we wanted, the Superman we need, and – thankfully – the Superman we actually got this time.

New ‘Man Of Steel’ Pics Showcasing Henry Cavill’s Bearded Clark Kent & Clean-Cut Superman (FLICKS AND BITS)

henry cavill beard superman 1 New Man Of Steel Pics Showcasing Henry Cavills Bearded Clark Kent & Clean Cut Superman

Variety has unleashed two more stills from Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures’ rapidly approaching Superman reboot, ‘Man of Steel.’ Alongside Henry Cavill in the dual role of Superman/Clark Kent, the key cast for ‘Man of Steel’ includes Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Kevin Costner as Superman/Clarke’s adoptive father Jonathan Kent, Diane Lane as Superman/Clarke’s adoptive mother Martha Kent, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Antje Traue as Faora, Ayelet Zurer as Superman’s Kryptonian mother Lara Lor-Van, Christopher Meloni as Colonel Hardy, Harry Lennix as General Swanwick, Michael Kelly as Steve Lombard, Richard Shiff as Dr. Emil Hamilton, and Russell Crowe as Jor-El; Superman’s Kryptonian father.

In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Henry Cavill) is a young twentysomething journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond anyone’s imagination. Transported to Earth years ago from Krypton, an advanced alien planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question – Why am I here? Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Diane Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner), Clark soon discovers that having super abilities means making very difficult decisions. But when the world needs stability the most, it comes under attack. Will his abilities be used to maintain peace or ultimately used to divide and conquer? Clark must become the hero known as “Superman,” not only to shine as the world’s last beacon of hope but to protect the ones he loves.

Set to hit 2D, 3D and IMAX cinemas on June 14th, ‘Man of Steel’ is from director Zack Snyder and producers Charles Roven, Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas and Deborah Snyder. The screenplay was written by David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight trilogy), based upon the iconic Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster and published by DC Comics. The official synopsis and production notes for ‘Man of Steel’ can be read below.

Kenneth Branagh talks 'Magic Flute' with Stephen Fry and filming with Keira Knightley and Chris Pine (IRISH CENTRAL)

By CAHIR O'DOHERTY, Irish Voice Arts Editor

Kenneth Branagh

On June 9 Kenneth Branagh's virtuoso adaptation of Mozart's most famous opera, 'The Magic Flute,' will open across the U.S.  With a libretto adapted by longtime friend and collaborator Stephen Fry, the film transplants the fantasy film opens on the eve of the First World War, taking us on a dangerous journey in pursuit of love and peace in a world full of death and destruction. Cahir O'Doherty talks to Branagh about the film and his new action thriller Jack Ryan starring Chris Pine and Keira Knightley.

Ken Branagh believes in the theatre like other people believe in God. He believes it can heal, he believes it can help and at times, when you least expect it, he believes it can be utterly miraculous.

“'The Magic Flute' takes us from the end of the fairytale or dream and into the nightmare. The excitement of military recruitment and conscription invites you in but then gives way to what comes after,” Branagh says.

(2005 Pride and Prejudice Blog)

Listening to him enthuse about his finely crafted film it’s important to remember to remind this: Branagh grew up in a working class estate in Belfast. No one in his family had any background in the theatre. In fact they told him it was for people who were usually unemployed, homosexual and not from around here. He was smart not to listen to them, as it turned out.

But how did he get from the hardscrabble estates to the very upper echelons of British society within two decades? How did this working class boy become the man most likely to become the next boss of the National Theatre (founded by Laurence Oliver, ironically enough)?

“I hope I haven’t shaken any hands with any devil or made some terrible bargain with my soul,” he laughs. “It was pretty remarkable to even receive the invitation to direct this film. It was pretty far from my old life back in Belfast. And yet the poetry and lyrical world of 'The Magic Flute' is not that far away from the folk songs and legends of home. The Irish have always embraced the fantastical with fairy stories and legends so when you come to Mozart they’re not so far from the romanticism that is at least part of the Irish character.”

Next up on Branagh’s slate is 'Jack Ryan,' the Tom Clancy thriller starring Chris Pine and Keira Knightley (Branagh directs and also plays the villain). “The script was an absolute page-turner when I read it and the role is perfect for an actor like Chris Pine to come in and own the role,” he confesses.

“It occupies the territory between Jason Bourne and James Bond and Ethan Hunt in Mission Impossible. 'Jack Ryan' is an everyman hero who bumps into the world of espionage in a way I think is very appealing.”

Branagh admits he enjoyed working with Chris Pine enormously and the film gave him a chance to reconnect with Kevin Costner, who he first met twenty years ago. He’s also full of praise for Keira Knightley.

“Keira brings class, real intelligence and wit and knockout beauty to 'Jack Ryan,'” he says. “She was a marvelous combination with Chris Pine. It’s an ever so suspenseful final and a real pleasure to make.”

Henry Cavill: Zack Snyder Talks ‘Man Of Steel’ & The Character Of Superman: “He’s A Christlike Figure”

In recent chat with the LA Times, Zack Snyder opened up about his eagerly awaited Superman movie, ‘Man of Steel.’ Long before the director began making the film, he’d heard a little piece of comic-book trivia that stuck with him: Superman’s red-and-yellow S-shield is the second-most-recognized symbol in the world, surpassed only by the Christian cross. “Whether that’s completely true or not, I don’t know, but you want it to be true. You feel like it could be true,” Snyder told the outlet. “And it’s intimidating to say, ‘We’re going to take on the “S” and we’re going to make it live again.’”

Reviving the world’s first comic-book superhero on the big screen — he recently turned 75 — is no small task, a challenge Zack Snyder was well aware of, “In the comic-book universe, you have all these sort of minor celebrities that have been put up as the end-all, be-all,” Snyder said, including past films that have featured Green Lantern, Ghost Rider and the Punisher among others. “And then you have the fallen king who’s sadly relegated to the shadows. It’s cool to resurrect him and say, ‘Understand that this is the granddaddy of all superheroes.’”

Henry Cavill’s ‘Man of Steel’ incarnation of Clark Kent/Superman lives in today’s world, not an idyllic, sepia-tinged past nor a gleaming, glossy future. “It’s the most realistic movie I’ve made. There’s no tongue in anyone’s cheek. I’m not apologizing for Superman in any way. I’m saying, ‘Superman is a thing that must be taken seriously and embraced and understood.’” Snyder continued, “We tried not to make him so predictably morally black and white. We gave him some shades of gray. His inherent goodness is still there, and if you really think about it, you still want him to be right and to make the right choices and to do the right thing. I think that we all hope for that in ourselves, and I think that’s what always has made him a very interesting character. He’s a Christlike figure. There’s no two ways about it.”

Alongside Henry Cavill in the dual role of Superman/Clark Kent , the key cast for ‘Man of Steel’ includes Oscar nominee Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Oscar nominee Michael Shannon as General Zod, Academy Award winner Kevin Costner as Superman/Clarke’s adoptive father Jonathan Kent, Oscar nominee Diane Lane as Superman/Clarke’s adoptive mother Martha Kent, Oscar nominee Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Antje Traue as Faora, Ayelet Zurer as Superman’s Kryptonian mother Lara Lor-Van, Christopher Meloni as Colonel Hardy, Harry Lennix as General Swanwick, Michael Kelly as Steve Lombard, Richard Shiff as Dr. Emil Hamilton, and Academy Award winner Russell Crowe as Jor-El; Superman’s Kryptonian father.

Arriving in cinemas on June 14th, ‘Man of Steel’ is from director Zack Snyder and producers Charles Roven, Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas and Deborah Snyder. The screenplay was written by David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight trilogy) from a story by Goyer and Nolan, based upon Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster and published by DC Comics.  The official synopsis and production notes for ‘Man of Steel’ can be read below.
