Colin Firth kicks ass in WonderCon sneak peak of Matthew Vaugh's 'Secret Service'

HIT FIX
By Philip Pirrello, Comic Book Resources   Monday, Apr 21, 2014 7:15 PM

(CBR) Even though footage from "Secret Service" previously screened at CinemaCon earlier this year, a second showing at WonderCon did not disappoint.

Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming adaptation of Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons' comic centers on a team of covert agents, operating to save the world much like MI-6 and the CIA do – minus the red tape. And with a lot more face busting.

The clip opened with team leader Uncle Jack (Colin Firth) nursing a pint in a UK pub opposite new recruit Gary, played by newcomer Taron Egerton. After exchanging expository dialogue, the drinks are interrupted by a group of hooligans wanting to pick a fight with Gary.

Cue Uncle Jack locking up the bar moments before beating the hell out of these guys, with an umbrella. The most inventive use of the umbrella comes at the end of the fight, as Jack deploys it as a shield to deflect bullets from an assailant – while keeping his sights on his attacker using a night-vision like screen making up the interior of the parasol.

Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Bonneville, James McAvoy, Tom Hollander, Ricky Gervais more: Exclusive: Stars shine in 'Muppets' cameos

Tom Hollander and Hugh Bonneville played shady fixers in "Muppets Most Wanted."
Tom Hollander and Hugh Bonneville played shady fixers in "Muppets Most Wanted."

Tom Hiddleston, Celine Dion, Sean Combs, Lady Gaga, Zach Galifianakis — it seems everyone wanted to be in Muppets Most Wanted.

The film, which opened March 21, continued the Muppet tradition of great celebrity cameos. Who could forget Steve Martin as a surly waiter in 1979's The Muppet Movie?

"It's the blink-and-you'll-miss-it ones that are really fun," says writer-director James Bobin.

Some of appearances, such as getting Usher to play a wedding usher, are written into the script, says Bobin, while others just seem to happen spontaneously. For example, Bobin knew he needed Sean Combs for a Muppets celebration scene.

Tom Hiddleston showed off a true talent -- escaping from a Russian gulag in "Muppets Most Wanted."

Adele: Survey confirms a hunch: Americans love Adele, don't like Justin Bieber By Randee Dawn, NBC News contributor

"PPP was testing the favorability ratings of some of today`s biggest music stars, and -- perhaps unsurprisingly -- a Brit earned the most accolades: Adele had 54 percent likability; close on her heels were Taylor Swift (53 percent), Justin Timberlake (52 percent) and Beyonce (51 percent). But breaking that 50 percent mark was hard for virtually everyone else -- including Jay-Z (25 percent), Lady Gaga (29 percent) and Rihanna (30 percent)."

NBC News

Americans may buy Justin Bieber's music, but that doesn't mean they like him much. According to a recent survey from Public Policy Polling, the pop idol is just not considered very likable: He received 54 percent unfavorable ratings and only 20 percent likable ones in the poll, which surveyed 571 voters on May 6 and 7 across the U.S.

Paul McCartney: Lady Gaga plants a smooch (Metro)

Lady Gaga plants smacker on Sir Paul McCartney at Grammy Awards

Relegated to the losers’ circle for once, Lady Gaga still stole the limelight when she planted a smacker on Sir Paul McCartney’s cheek in front of his new wife Nancy Shevell at the Grammys.

The Born This Way singer made her move on the Beatles legend after a disappointing night, when she lost out to six-time winner Adele for three awards. The Wings front man gasped in mock surprise when Gaga struck - planting a smacker on the aging popstar.

Earlier in the evening the 69-year-old, proving he’s still got it, was spotted snogging wife of four months Nancy Shevell, 51. Despite failing to pick up a single nod at this year's star-studded event, Gaga proved there were no hard feelings with a tweet congratulating London-born singer Adele on her record-equalling night.
