Benedict Cumberbatch: Actors shouldn't take jobs where their female co-stars aren't paid equally

Benedict Cumberbatch, known for playing Marvel's Dr. Strange and the BBC's Sherlock Holmes, suggested in a recent interview that male actors — including himself — should turn down roles in productions in which women are not paid equally.

"Look at your quotas. Ask what women are being paid, and say: 'If she's not paid the same as the men, I'm not doing it,'" Cumberbatch said in an interview with Radio Times Sunday while promoting his latest series, "Patrick Melrose."

Cumberbatch hopes to enact this policy at his new production company, SunnyMarch, as well.

"I'm proud that [business partner] Adam [Ackland] and I are the only men in our production company," he said. "Our next project is a female story with a female lens about motherhood, in a time of environmental disaster. If it's centered around my name, to get investors, then we can use that attention for a raft of female projects."

He says that focusing on women-centric stories is both the right thing to do, and good business.

"Equal pay and a place at the table are the central tenets of feminism," said Cumberbatch, who has long spoken about his identity as a feminist.

Ok, so first up – the trailer for Doctor Strange is finally here!

Secondly, what do we think of Benedict Cumberbatch's American accent as Marvel's mystical superhero?

"I don’t believe in fairytales about chakras or energy or the power of belief," says Cumbers in a very throaty US drawl, and to us it sounds not unlike another Brit abroad, Hugh Laurie in House.

Marvel made it official last night, announcing that Benedict Cumberbatch, 38, would take on the role of "Doctor Strange" in the film due out on Nov. 4, 2016.

Doctor Stephen Strange discovers the world of magic and other dimensions following a terrible car accident, according to the official release.

The transition from "Sherlock" to "Strange" seems about as organic as can be and there's no question of Cumberbatch's acting chops. Plus, did you see him in "Star Trek Into Darkness" as Khan? The guy can kick some serious butt.

For average comic fans who don't know who this superhero is, it's time to get educated.

Strange first appeared in Marvel books back in the 1960s and his name partly came from the fact he first popped up in a series called "Strange Tales."

According to Marvel Wiki, Strange was a doctor, but that car accident mentioned above "severely damaged the nerves in his hands, ending his surgical career."
