Benedict Cumberbatch Discusses The Time He Accidentally Made A Boner Joke To A Teenage Girl

CRUSHABLE
7 hours ago by Jill O’Rourke

Oh, Benedict Cumberbatch. What an awkward British butterfly. His recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show is like the gift that just keeps on giving. There were Beyonce impressions, there were pengwings, and now there’s a story about the time he accidentally told a teenage girl she gave him a boner. And not just any teenage girl — a gold-medal-winning Olympic swimmer. What a time to be alive!

Let me set the scene for you. Last year (actually this year, but he says last year so just go with it) Benedict was presenting at the Laureus Awards, which he describes as “like the Oscars, but for sports.” He almost lost me as soon as he said the word “sports,” but his voice is so captivating that I kept listening. And boy was it worth it! Benedict explains that he spoke to American swimmer Missy Franklin at the event, and reminds us that she’s still a teenager (19 now, but 18 then). That’s an important detail to remember when you hear his story. Benedict was marveling at how much she’s accomplished at such a young age, and he was trying to express how old it made him feel, and he chose to use the sentence “I’m just getting stiff even listening to you.”

Benedict Cumberbatch can't hide his astonishment as he comes face-to-face with his very own waxwork

Spot the difference: Benedict Cumberbatch was honoured with his very own waxwork at Madame Tussaud's in London this week and came face-to-face with it on The Graham Norton Show

This week he was honoured with his very own waxwork at Madame Tussaud's in London and Benedict Cumberbatch couldn't hide his astonishment when he saw it firsthand.

The 38-year-old actor was greeted with the figure when he was taping an appearance on BBC's The Graham Norton Show and made sure to examine it thoroughly while looking utterly bemused.

Benedict even adopted an identical pose to his doppelganager to allow Graham, fellow guests Miranda Hart, Timothy Spall, and Adam Levine and the audience to see the similarities for themselves.

Call the Midwife: Recap: It’s Chummy to the Rescue in the ‘Call the Midwife’ Season Opener

ANGLOPHENIA
By Leah Rozen | Posted on March 31st, 2014

(PBS)

Miranda Hart returns as Chummy in Call the Midwife. (PBS)

Call the Midwife, the British series about a group of nurse-midwives and nuns who help the poor in London’s East End in the late 1950s, got off to a promising start with its season opener on PBS. There was even a royal visit.

The midwives and nuns are on the move as Season Three begins. Suitcases in hand, they depart their old, condemned-for-demolition residence and move with their belongings to new, more spacious digs. As they settle in, handyman Fred Buckle (Cliff Parisi) puts up the familiar Nonnatus House nameplate on their new home.

The gang is all there, minus Chummy Noakes (Miranda Hart), who now lives in an apartment with her policeman husband, Peter (Ben Caplan), and spends her days mothering their infant son, Fred (named after the handyman). With her characteristic energy and enthusiasm, Chummy is busily sewing, cooking and cleaning, as if determined to clinch the title for Best Housewife Ever.

Also gone from Nonnatus House is Sister Bernadette, who left the order to marry and move in with the kindly, widowed Dr. Patrick Turner (Stephen McGann) and his young son last season. Now called by her given name, Shelagh (Laura Main), she serves as the receptionist for Nonnatus House’s healthcare clinic, which has been relocated to the community center this season. (Shelagh and Dr. Turner are trying to get pregnant, likely a continuing storyline this season.)

In Shelagh’s place, a newcomer joins the Nonnatus House posse. Meet Sister Winifred (Victoria Yeates), who as yet displays no major discernable personality quirks. In her favor, she’s quick to smile and doesn’t cower in fright when gruff Sister Evangelina (Pam Ferris) barks at her.

Three major story lines dominate the episode. The first involves Jenny Lee (Jessica Raine), our first among equals of the young midwives. After delivering a baby in an early scene, she moves on to tend a young mother who is worried because both her infant son and his toddler brother seem to be ill much of the time. Jenny is concerned, both about the youngsters and their mother, who may be suffering from post-partum depression. She begins visiting regularly and consults with Dr. Turner about the case.

The earthy spirituality of the wonderful ‘Call the Midwife’

RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE
Rachel Marie Stone   | Mar 4, 2014

While I cannot deny that the BBC series Downton Abby has its undeniable pleasures — Maggie Smith’s performance as the Dowager Countess chief among them — having watched and rewatched it through three seasons, it does not, for me, rise above the level of a semi-guilty pleasure; a happy diversion and escape.

By contrast, the other BBC series Call the Midwife — which has been more popular in the UK than Downton — not only holds up under repeated viewings, it improves. But even more, the show offers an astonishingly positive view of religion and religious people.

The nuns, from the apparently angelic but worldly-wise and tolerant Sister Julienne to the crass but loving Sister Evangeline to the aged and doddering Sister Monica Joan, defy every crude stereotype ever dreamed up by scriptwriters.

While it was my particular interest in maternal health that drew me to Jennifer Worth’s wonderful memoirs (upon which the shows are based), what surprised and delighted me was the way in which the sisters of Nonnatus House in London’s East End serve the whole community in the whole range of life. They greet the newborns; they tend the dying; they keep the hours of prayer in the midst of blood and pain, mud and misery.

In one episode, a young girl secretly gives birth in an empty basement as the nuns sing Vespers; their haunting plainsong invoking mercy, grace, and protection for the coming night even as the girl cries in bringing forth her young. The sisters are not yet able to extend care to her, but their prayers intercede before their skilled and loving hands and hearts do.

Dan Stevens, Stephen Fry, Princess Anne - BT British Olympic Ball Surpasses Fundraising Target for Team GB

10/11/2011

The British Olympic Association (BOA) is delighted to announce that the 2011 BT British Olympic Ball, which took place last Friday (7th October) at Kensington Olympia, has raised well over £700,000 for Team GB, far exceeding the fundraising target for the event.

The star studded, sell out evening saw more than 2,000 guests from the world of sport and entertainment rubbing shoulders with Olympic legends and Team GB hopefuls in Olympia’s stunning Grand Hall. In total, the winners of over 140 Olympic medals, including more than 80 gold medals, were present in the room, making it a truly unique and special celebration of British Olympic success.

Among those to walk the glittering gold carpet were three-times cycling Olympic gold medallist Bradley Wiggins, 400m hurdles World Champion Dai Greene, triathlon world number one and two Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee, Olympic rowing legend Sir Steve Redgrave and a host of celebrities including Downtown Abbey’s Dan Stevens, former Spice Girl Melanie Chisholm, model Nell McAndrew and singer Katie Melua.

HRH Princess Anne was guest of honour on the evening. An Olympian herself, the Princess Royal delivered a speech calling on the entire nation to unite in support of the greatest team Great Britain and Northern Ireland will ever have sent to an Olympic Games.

As part of the evening’s entertainment guests were treated to performances by the legendary Sir Tom Jones and current rap sensation Tinchy Stryder. The exquisite menu was devised by Michelin starred Executive Chef Tom Aikens.

Hosted by Stephen Fry and Miranda Hart, the evening allowed guests the unique opportunity to bid on once in a lifetime London 2012 hospitality packages donated by Prestige Ticketing, including the chance to watch the finals sessions for track cycling in the Velodrome, swimming in the Aquatics Centre and perhaps the most coveted seats of all: the men’s 100m final.

Andy Hunt, Team GB Chef de Mission and BOA CEO said:
“The 2011 BT British Olympic Ball was bigger and better than ever and we are delighted with the tremendous level of support expressed for Team GB from the 2,200 guests in attendance. Raising nearly three-quarters of a million pounds from this event is a fantastic outcome for Team GB and we are really grateful to everyone who supported and participated in the event.

“It was an outstanding evening of high quality music and entertainment and it was inspiring to see over one hundred of our greatest Olympians, spanning five decades of British Olympic success, alongside many of the current athletes who will represent Team GB as part of Our Greatest Team at the London 2012 Games.

“It was a truly memorable occasion and, crucially, the excellent level of funds raised will help the British Olympic Association to provide Team GB with the high performance support and expertise necessary to achieve our aspiration of winning more medals from more sports at London 2012.”

Ben Ainslie, triple Olympic gold medallist and Athlete Co-Chair for the BT British Olympic Ball, said:
“I was delighted at how successful this year’s event was. To see more than 2,000 people coming out to support what will be our greatest ever Team GB was inspiring for myself and all the other athletes who attended.

“London 2012 is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and the BOA’s aspiration for Team GB to win more medals from more sports than we have done in over a century is an ambitious one. The funds raised at the Ball will help in achieving these goals.”

Olympic Gold medallist, Sally Gunnell, added:

“This year’s BT British Olympic Ball was an outstanding success and an inspirational evening for all the athletes who attended. As a former member of Team GB, I understand how important it is that we give our athletes every chance of success next summer, the funds raised at the Ball will help to ensure that everything is in place to allow them to perform to the highest possible standard.”

Suzi Williams, director, BT Group Marketing & Brand, said:

“We’re proud to have helped make the 2011 BT British Olympic Ball the best yet. It was a fantastic event and the money raised will help Team GB give their best performance next summer. And we’re delighted that it doesn’t stop there - we look forwards to supporting an even better celebration after the Games next year.”

Peter Mather, BP’s Head of Country UK, said:
“In addition to the fantastic sums raised at the ball, BP Target Neutral offset the entire travel carbon footprint of the ball as part of BP’s commitment to help make London 2012 the most sustainable Games possible. The BOA is joining Target Neutral and spectators from around the world in setting a new world record for the most number of journeys offset to a single event – London 2012.
We’re proud to be supporting the BOA and Team GB, at the ball and beyond, as they aim for success at the Games”

Richard Hudson, Marketing Director, BMW UK, said:

“We’re delighted to continue our support of Team GB as a partner of this year’s hugely successful BT British Olympic Ball. Our proud support of over 100 athletes in the BMW London 2012 Performance Team and our continued commitment to the BOA will enable Team GB to deliver the ultimate performance at London 2012.”
