Benedict Cumberbatch: “I’d hate to think anyone is sick of the sight of me”

RADIO TIMES

benedict-cumberbatch-raised-eyebrow.gif

Actor Benedict Cumberbatch says he hopes he’s not overexposed himself with the amount of roles he’s taken on. Yes, he realises that sounds dirty.

“I’d hate to think anyone is sick of the sight of me, although I wouldn’t blame them. It’s just crazy. I’ve overexposed myself! Actually that sounds a bit dirty,” Cumberbatch tells Adelaide’s The Advertiser.

“I’m proud of every single project. I can genuinely say that it is varied enough, as a slate, to not fear too much overexposure. I just hope the public agree because they are seeing a lot of me.”

Cumberbatch is undoubtedly hot property - although perhaps fans of Sherlock would be quick to suggest more of that on our screens wouldn’t go amiss.

But of course he’s a busy man. Star Trek, 12 Years A Slave and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug have all had Cumberbatch’s name on the cast list. But he seems to be having fun with it. The Oscars photobombing of U2 springs to mind. The actor admits, “It would be really churlish to complain about anything to be honest. I’m very fortunate to be in the position I’m in.”

Cumberbatch eyeing romantic role

XPOSE
Tuesday, 4 March 2014

Benedict Cumberbatch has his eye on playing a hunk in a romantic comedy.

Benedict Cumberbatch fancies playing a romantic lead in the future.

The British star has captured the hearts of many female fans in TV show Sherlock and films such as August: Osage County and Star Trek Into Darkness.

He's yet to take on the part of a handsome hunk in a rom-com, but it's something the 37-year-old would be happy to do.

"Absolutely!" he assured spiegel.de.

"I would love to see myself as a leading man in that kind of a role, especially in a romantic comedy. I can hardly wait to get my hands on the right script!"

Benedict remains down to earth and at the Oscars earlier this month he was spotted cheekily photo bombing U2 as they posed on the red carpet.

He doesn't think that making it big in Hollywood is an instant recipe for losing sight of who he is.
"Oh my god, they've created a monster!" he joked.

"Haha, no, Hollywood doesn't create monsters, they're already inside of us, before we're offered money, eternal youth and all other kinds of magic. Hollywood is just the centre of the film industry, where people go to plan movies. And sometimes they also get made."

Anne-Marie Duff on James McAvoy, whether she'd brave the jungle and Elvis (RADIO TIMES0

Claire Webb
12:08 AM, 28 May 2013

Why return to Shameless after all these years?

I made a drunken promise as I was leaving that I’d come back to play Fiona Gallagher for the very last episode – never thinking it would happen! It was extraordinary: same grim and grubby kitchen, same props... It was lovely.

Did falling for James McAvoy off-screen as well as on make the “shameless” scenes awkward?

I’m not going to go into that! But yes, I’ve got a lot to be grateful for. It’s extraordinary what happened to us all – we all thought this was probably a Titanic of a programme at the beginning. It’s been such an incredible opportunity for all of us.

Why do you think Fiona is such a good character?

I think Paul Abbott writes so beautifully – especially for women. They’re never just archetypes. Fiona was sexy, funny and naughty and at the same time had this huge moral code.

Anne-Marie Duff on James McAvoy, whether she'd brave the jungle and Elvis

What can’t you miss on TV?

A really good British drama. America is the most innovative at the moment but I think British drama is always higher quality. Recently I’ve been totally glued to The Village.

And when you’re after something a little more... Trashy?

The Voice! There doesn’t seem to be the humiliation aspect of a lot of other talent contests.

So you could never be tempted by I’m a Celebrity...?

No way, José! There’s not enough money in the world. I think those shows are a little bit unhealthy.

Childhood favourite?

Come Back Lucy, which was about a little girl who lived in a haunted house. I would sometimes pretend to be her when I was playing. I also have fond memories of watching James Bond movies on bank holidays because we’d have crisps and chocolate as a special treat.

What film have you curled up to time and again?

Brief Encounter. I find it an extraordinarily grown-up, tender love story that still stands the test of time.

Who would you invite to your dream dinner party?

Elvis Presley. I’m the biggest Elvis fan in the Western world. Ever since I saw King Creole on TV in my teens and he was pretty tasty...

Benedict Cumberbatch: 'Star Trek' star's five best screen roles Published Tuesday, May 7 2013, 4:00am EDT | By Emma Dibdin | (DIGITAL SPY)

Benedict Cumberbatch in 'Hawking' (2004)

The campaign for JJ Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness has leaned so heavily on Benedict Cumberbatch's mysterious villain John Harrison that it's easy to forget he's still largely unknown in the US.

But while Trek fever will have died down by autumn, Cumberbatch fever is unlikely to follow suit: he's got a spectacularly awards-baiting trio lined up with Julian Assange biopic The Fifth Estate, Steven McQueen's Twelve Years A Slave and Meryl Streep/George Clooney drama August: Osage County.

With that bright future in mind, Digital Spy takes a look back over Cumberbatch's five most memorable roles to date.

Stuart: A Life Backwards (2007)
We included this on our Tom Hardy top five list last year, which should give you some indication of just how powerful its two lead performances are. Following the true story of the friendship that developed between an unstable young homeless man (Hardy) and an author (Cumberbatch) who was writing his life story, this is a subtle and increasingly devastating two-hander which makes both actors' subsequent success all the more gratifying.

Sherlock (2010- )
Despite being set in the present day, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss's lovingly detailed take on Sherlock Holmes retains the spirit of Arthur Conan Doyle's novels as well as any adaptation ever has. Cumberbatch's mercurial, fascinating Sherlock – self-described as a "high-functioning sociopath" – combines the suave appeal of Basil Rathbone's 1930s Holmes with the arrogance and vulnerability that made Jeremy Brett's incarnation definitive for many fans. Any Holmes is only good as his Watson, and it's Cumberbatch's warm, utterly believable chemistry with Martin Freeman that makes Sherlock arguably the best thing on British telly. When it's actually on.

Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch is cyberstalked (THE TELEGRAPH)

By Tim Walker7:30AM GMT 13 Mar 2013

It is a crime that would have been beyond the ken of even the modern-day Sherlock Holmes that he portrays on screen: cyberstalking.

Benedict Cumberbatch admits that he was sufficiently unnerved when one of his neighbours started to document his actions in his own home in real time on a social networking site this week that he felt he had no alternative but to call in the police.

“I would say that it was the strangest fan experience that I’ve ever had,” Cumberbatch tells Mandrake. “I had someone live tweeting my movements while I was in my own house.

“It was such a strange and a direct thing to see these tweets saying what I was doing as I was doing them. I found it really worrying, and, yes, of course, very hard to deal with. I worked out after a while who it was who was doing it so, when it came to it, I didn’t actually call in the police, but I was prepared to do so.

'Sherlock' Star Benedict Cumberbatch Collects Broadcasting Press Guild Award For 'Parade's End', Rebecca Hall Also Honoured (HUFF POST)

Cumberbatch with 'Parade's End' adaptor Sir Tom Stoppard

Benedict Cumberbatch has picked up another award for his starring role in 'Sherlock' and said he was looking forward to getting his teeth back into the part of the scruffy sleuth.

The actor, who was named best actor at the Broadcasting Press Guild for his performance in 'Sherlock' and the period drama Parade's End, said he was looking forward to starting filming next week.

He said: "Playing Sherlock means a great deal to me. It's lovely to be back and have the hair in place. We're getting our teeth into the first episode of the new series next week so it feels like a treat. It's just wonderful to be back."

Benedict's 'Parade's End' co-star, Rebecca Hall, also walked away with a trophy after she was named best actress for her performance as his on-screen wife in the drama.

'Parade's End', which was shown on BBC Two in five episodes last year, picked up four prizes and was named best drama series, while dramatist Sir Tom Stoppard won the BPG writer's award for his work adapting the original novels by Ford Madox Ford.

Benedict Cumberbatch: "I'd love to keep it going for as long as possible, I think we all would" : Benedict Cumberbatch confirms fourth season of Sherlock (MIRROR)

Star added that next episode - explaining detective's survival after roof plunge - is "an absolute stonker"

Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch has revealed that he and co-star Martin Freeman are on board for a fourth season of the BBC1 hit drama.

The 36-year-old said that he would love for the series to continue for “as long as possible” as he picked up the television drama prize for Parade’s End at the South Bank Sky Arts Awards.

"We've agreed to two more series but I could get into trouble for saying that," he told radiotimes.com.

"All I know at the moment is I'm doing these three [episodes of the upcoming series] and another three."

And although keen to carry on with more episodes beyond the next run, Cumberbatch did admit that the show’s future did depend on the availability of not only himself and The Hobbit star, but writer Steven Moffat too.

"We love doing it as we are doing it at the moment in the format we are doing it," he said.

"I'd love to keep it going for as long as possible, I think we all would."

Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston win new awards and their loyal fan armies rejoice (Gazette)

Benedict Cumberbatch plays Christopher Tietjens in Parade's End, a BBC/HBO/VRT co-production. (HBO)

British actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston have both won awards at the South Bank Sky Arts Awards, Tuesday, March 12, 2013, in London.

Strictly speaking, Cumberbatch’s award was an indirect one. He starred in Parade’s End, which won the Best TV Drama Award. Would it have done so if he were not in it? Would it have garnered as many viewers?

I don’t think so, and neither does Susanna White, who directed the series. She told Britain’s Radio Times:  “I think Benedict is one of the finest actors of his generation. And we were really lucky to get him because without him, Parade’s End would be nothing like it is.”

Parade’s End is set in the days before, during and after World War I and is based on a series of novels by Ford Madox Ford. It can be still be seen on HBO and HBO Canada. (Click to see the HBO schedule, or the HBO Canada schedule.)

As for Tom Hiddleston, The Guardian reported that he: “. . .picked up the Times breakthrough award for his acting in The Hollow Crown and films including War Horse and Avengers Assemble.”

The Hollow Crown was a four-part BBC series of Shakespeare’s plays: Richard II; Henry IV, Part 1; Henry IV, Part 2; Henry V. Tom Hiddleston was in all of them except for Richard II. He played Prince Hal, son of Henry IV, and then went on to play Henry V. The series was shown in Britain in 2012 as part of that country’s Olympic celebrations, and will be shown on PBS in the U.S. (much) later this year.

Hiddleston played the troubled villain Loki (fangirls love to love him) in Thor and the film that’s simply known as The Avengers in other countries.  It’s called Avengers Assemble in Britain to distinguish it from the TV series that starred Diana Rigg and Patrick Macnee. (Oh! The Internet says that Macnee is 91. Bravo! )

Benedict Cumberbatch is mesmerising in Star Trek Into Darkness preview (RADIO TIMES)

The Sherlock star takes the movie to another level, says Paul Jones, following a screening of new material from the sci-fi blockbuster

Paul Jones
2:39 PM, 08 March 2013

RadioTimes.com was among those treated to a screening of unseen footage from the upcoming Star Trek sequel at the London IMAX in Waterloo today – the first 28 delicious minutes of sci-fi blockbusting goodness, plus two further scenes from later on in the movie.

It's good news, people.

True, I can't make any judgement on bigger picture stuff, like how the wider plot hangs together or about the emotional heart of the movie, but on the sci-fi-action-drama axis, it delivers. Like a postman on steroids. Or something...

The action sequences we saw are spectacular and gripping, there's plenty of humour and some great performances (with honourable mention going to Zachary Quinto as Spock – and not to Simon Pegg's grating parody of chief engineer Scotty).

But the one thing that really stood out based on what we saw today was Benedict Cumberbatch as villain John Harrison (yes, as far as we know that's still his name).

We didn't see huge amounts of him but when Cumberbatch is on screen the movie hits another level. He is, instantly, utterly mesmerising (even before he appears that voice alone does the job). He brings an intensity to every scene, even the briefest appearances, and carries it through into the more physical set-pieces, particularly a chase and fight with Quinto.

Benedict Cumberbatch steps into DiCaprio's shoes as Alan Turing (Deep Inside HollywoodBy Romeo San Vicente)

It's turning into Benedict Cumberbatch's year at the movies. Co-starring in "The Hobbit" trilogy, "Star Trek Into Darkness" and the film adaptation of "August: Osage County" will put the acclaimed, chameleonic British actor on multiplex screens stateside for the foreseeable future. And now he's in talks to star in "The Imitation Game" as famed British World War II hero Alan Turing (quick history lesson: Turing cracked the German "Enigma" code during the war, helping Allied forces win; he was prosecuted in the 1950s for homosexuality and chose chemical castration over imprisonment, later committing suicide)

The actor has revealed that after studying drama at Manchester University he decided to take soem time out from acting to travel abroad. He ventured to Darjeeling in India and as a GAP overseas student volunteer, taught English in a Tibetan Buddhist monastery.

Benedict Cumberbatch: Cabin Pressure; In Concert: a week in radio This contemporary sitcom has an impressive cast, including Benedict Cumberbatch, and a script packed with superb lines (GUARDIAN)

Nosheen Iqbal

Light relief in the dreary first full working week of the year came from the return of Cabin Pressure to Radio 4. One of the station's few contemporary sitcom successes (more on that subject another week), it has lured Benedict Cumberbatch and Roger Allam back for a fourth run at playing odd-couple pilots Martin and Douglas. The pair man MJN Air: a tinpot, one-plane budget airline owned by middle-aged divorcee Carolyn, played by Stephanie Cole. It's an impressive cast – Allam does a great line in supercilious grumps and he is in his element as the snarky first officer to Cumberbatch's prissy, uptight captain. But perhaps the real star of the show is its writer John Finnemore, who also plays Carolyn's doofus air-steward son, Arthur.

"The code red is there to stop me being too helpful, and I can't stop being too helpful by being more helpful," he bumbled at his mum, in a script packed tight with superb lines. The crew had assembled for Birling Day, the annual jolly enjoyed by their stupidly rich (and often drunk) regular customer, who charters a flight each year to take him to see the Six Nations rugby final. Except this year, the match was taking place at Twickenham, a short drive from Birling's own house. No matter.

Benedict Cumberbatch discusses the assumptions people make about him based on the characters he plays (THE GUARDIAN)

Benedict Cumberbatch: 'People assume things about you because of who you play.' Photograph: Spencer Murphy

It's been a while since Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch complained about "posh-bashing" and people castigating him as a "moaning, rich, public school bastard". He is complaining again – or is he? – in the latest issue of Radio Times, about the assumptions people make about him based on the characters he plays. "They know you from the trail you leave with your work," he told the listings magazine. "They assume things about you because of who you play and how you play them, and the other scraps floating around in the ether. People try to sew together a narrative out of scant fact."
