Ripper Street: Season Three Starts April 29th on BBC America

TV SERIES FINALE
March 26, 2015

As you may recall, BBC cancelled Ripper Street after two seasons. The series was later revived thanks to a deal between BBC and Amazon. Late last year, the new season of eight episodes was offered exclusively in the UK on Prime Instant Video. Now, BBC America has announced the premiere of season three in the States for Wednesday, April 29th.

Here are the details:

BBC AMERICA’S “RIPPER STREET” RETURNS FOR SEASON THREE ON APRIL 29, 10:00PM ET

The robbery of a goods train leads to a cataclysmic locomotive disaster on Leman Street, reuniting the men and their resentments to seek its cause

New York – March 26, 2015 – BBC AMERICA’s critically-acclaimed and BAFTA nominated original British drama Ripper Street returns in April. Picking up in 1894, four years after the culmination of season two, the new season reveals a vivid and sensual descent into the lives of the men and women who must live on the violent streets of Whitechapel in late Victorian London. Ripper Street premieres Wednesday, April 29, 10:00pm ET on BBC AMERICA.

Ripper Street series three: five things you should know

Matthew Macfadyen returns as Detective Inspector Reid, Jerome Flynn as the newly promoted Detective Inspector Bennet Drake, and Adam Rothenberg as Captain Homer Jackson. MyAnna Buring also returns as Long Susan in the eight-part season.

Four years have passed since Reid bayed for Drake to end the life of Jedediah Shine. Four years that have seen the crime-fighting axis of Reid, Drake and Jackson split and isolated from one another. Drake has left London for Manchester to become the policeman – and man – he felt he could no longer be in Whitechapel. He is an Inspector himself now. Jackson has reverted to the man Reid plucked out of the Tenter Street brothel, a two-penny, sawbones, clap-doctor. And Reid has succumbed to his own shame and isolation, policing Whitechapel with a level of forensic detail and dedication that leads Chief Inspector Fred Abberline to fear for his old friend’s mental well-being.

Meanwhile, Long Susan has made good on her threats to both Captain Jackson and the dying Silas Dugan – she has separated from her husband, taken command of Duggan’s criminal empire and turned it into a legitimate property empire of huge philanthropic ambition. But such aspirations are costly, as her loyal but scheming solicitor Ronald Capshaw knows only too well.

All these resentments, fears and ambitions are soon forgotten, however, when two trains collide on the newly constructed bridge above Leman Street. It is a catastrophe which falls into Reid’s world and demands explanation. His pursuit reunites him with Drake and Jackson and sets him on his own collision course with his past and with the secret crimes of Long Susan and Ronald Capshaw.

HERALD.IE
BY MELANIE FINN – 06 JUNE 2014 12:00 AM

Here’s an unexpected sight - filming for series three of Ripper Street on the streets of Dublin this morning.

And this morning it was business as usual for the often-gruesome show as the cast and crew descended on the Custom House in Dublin’s north inner city.

In one scene, actress MyAnna Buring, who plays brothel madam Long Susan, is seen exiting the building showing blood-stained hands.

Also making a welcome return to the new series is Monaghan native Charlene McKenna, who plays former prostitute Rose.

An industry source told the Irish Independent that the cast and crew of the BBC production will once again shoot the entire series in Dublin and are scheduled to continue filming at Clancy Barracks until August 31.

"The whole team really enjoyed filming in Ireland last year and it worked out very well for the production," the source said.

The first instalment saw Matthew Macfadyen, Jerome Flynn and Adam Rothenberg play policemen and a doctor living in Whitechapel in 1880s London, in the aftermath of the Jack the Ripper murders.

Matthew Macfadyen and EPIC THE MAKING OF

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gb_FvBTqQk

Ok, I don't really know what's going on here - they say it's the making of the movie EPIC with Matthew Macfadyen and MyAnna Buring (they do make a gorgeous couple!) uh huh.

Here's what I think.  It's the secret Russian version of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE.  Matthew Macfadyen is Mr. Darcy (of course), MyAnna Buring is Lizzy Bennet, Lasha Ramishvili is Colonel Fitzwilliam (or Mrs. Bennet...possibly)

The first few seconds are a tangle of arms and legs, none of which, unfortunately, belong to Matthew Macfadyen. Then there's heavy breathing - again, I don't think it's Matthew, because there is no British accent.   It's probably just the film crew reacting to the cold.

We next see Pemberley surrounded by luxurious RV's, and someone named Ben Hopkins combs his hair.  Then the Three Musketeers come in to the ball.

(SPOILERS) Ripper Street, Series Finale, BBC One Powerful climax to 19th century detective series by Adam Sweeting Monday, 25 February 2013 (THE ARTS DESK)

Victorian villains beware: it's DI Reid (Matthew Macfadyen, left) with DS Drake (Jerome Flynn)

Last week we left Homer Jackson, the raffish ex-Pinkerton detective with the exceedingly chequered past, languishing in jail, after being fitted up for a Ripper-style killing by the murderous Frank Goodnight (played by cultish US actor Edoardo Ballerini). For this week's finale, Matthew Macfadyen's DI Reid urgently needed to get Jackson out again in order to apply his advanced forensic skills to unravelling a white slaving racket.

Jackson was slickly able to prove his own innocence, then quickly extracted crucial clues about the gang who were drugging and kidnapping young women. His medical know-how and boffinly mucking about with test tubes, chemicals and tissue samples have made him a kind of Victorian prototype of CSI's Gil Grissom, and it's reflective of Ripper Street's wider interest in new trends and fashions of its era (Adam Rothenberg as Jackson and MyAnna Buring as Long Susan, pictured below).

Strong characters, generally dynamic stories and a powerful sense of period have meant that Ripper Street has grown steadily as it's gone along. Series two is already under construction

Record Producer Clive Davis Eyeing Anne Hathaway and Colin Firth for My Fair Lady Broadway Revival By Michael Gioia 20 Feb 2013 (PLAYBILL)

http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/colin%20firth

Grammy Award-winning record producer Clive Davis, who plans to produce a Broadway revival of Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's Tony-wining My Fair Lady, is eyeing Oscar nominee Anne Hathaway and Oscar winner Colin Firth for the show's leading roles, according to USA Today.

As previoulsy reported, Davis plans to bring the classic back to Broadway in 2014. He will produce the musical alongside Roger Berlind, Scott Landis and The Nederlander Organization.

http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/colin%20firth

"I always wanted to produce a Broadway show, and I've never done it," Davis previously told the Los Angeles Times. "I'm hopeful we will prepare and finalize everything this year to bring My Fair Lady next year to Broadway with a stellar cast. I don't want to jinx myself, but we're in discussions with two magnificent performers and a wonderful director to do that."

According to Davis, Hathaway ("Les Misérables," "The Devil Wears Prada") and Firth ("The King's Speech"), who would play the respective roles of Eliza Doolittle and Professor Henry Higgins, were up for the same roles in a screen adaptation of "My Fair Lady," which fell through and made the rights available for a Broadway remounting.

This British actress has really stylishly come into her own during the recent promotional tour for her film, Jack Reacher. From Erdem to Alexander McQueen to Giambattista Valli, Rosamund Pike has been selecting some truly stellar red carpet creations lately. She's always had a bit of a bold streak maintaing an ability to convincingly pull off bright colors as well as strong prints and patterns.

Rosamund also has monochromatic dressing down. Take the all-black chic Tom Ford suit she was just spotted in last week over in London at the Elle Style Awards 2013. A pair of Nicholas Kirkwood black pumps capped off the look. She's also becoming a regular face at various fashion shows. At the Christian Dior show during Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week Spring 2013 last month, Rosamund looked stylish outfitted in a checkered coat accented by a black Lady Dior Cannage bag and Azzedine Alaïa studded ankle boots.

Review of Ripper Street ‘A Man of My Company’ By Neela Debnath (SPOILERS)

SPOILERS: Do not read this if you have not seen episode 7 of ‘Ripper Street’

This week was the penultimate episode in the series and saw the Whitechapel trio investigate the murder of an engineer of a ship company but that was only part of the story.

Most importantly, the audience finally learned the truth about Homer Jackson or Matthew Judge and Long Susan. It was a simple love story of a man falling for his boss’s daughter and running away with her. The secret wasn’t as dark and mysterious as it was thought to be. Viewers may have been expecting something quite sinister and a bit grisly – the show is called Ripper Street after all but it was all quite tame.

Instead the shocking moment of the episode came when Hobbs was murdered. He was killed in such a callous way, first paralysed by having his spinal cord cut, then tossed into the Thames to drown. Throughout the series Hobbs has been an endearing character on par with Drake, Jonathan Barnwell has given a wonderful performance as the young officer and it is a pity to lose him.

Colin Firth takes a funny turn in Gambit James Luxford Feb 14, 2013 (THE NATIONAL)

Audiences will see a very different side to the Oscar-winning British actor Colin Firth in his new comedy, Gambit. Based on a 1966 film starring Michael Caine, the Coen brothers-written remake stars Firth as a put-upon art curator who decides to get revenge on his boss (Alan Rickman) by conning him into buying a fake masterpiece, enlisting the help of a rowdy Texan named PJ (Cameron Diaz). Comedy is a very different genre for the actor, who is better known for dramas such as The King's Speech and Pride and Prejudice.

Did making this film give you a new respect for comic actors?
Not a new respect no, because I already knew it was going to be difficult, because comedy is difficult. It's something that I think is vastly underrated, the ability to be funny, and it's a genre that I think a lot of actors avoid intentionally. I've been lucky enough to work with some performers, such as Cameron, who really have a sixth sense for comedy, and that's a wonderful thing to observe. I suppose others will judge how I fared, but it was a wonderful challenge.

How did it compare to your more dramatic roles?
It's like working a different muscle, really. I suppose the biggest challenge was trying to make a moment humorous on film. Because of the way a film is shot, you have to keep that level of spontaneity fresh over several different takes. Mostly it was just making sure what was written on the page by the Coen brothers translated onto the screen and preserved as something that would make people laugh.

Ripper Street TV Review: Ripper Street, ‘Tournament Of Shadows’ February 5, 2013 Stu Whittaker (WHATCULTURE) (SPOILERS, AS USUAL, FOR US)

After last weeks enticing episode, ‘The Weight of One Man’s Heart’, Detective Sergeant Bennet Drake (Jerome Flynn) had his story told. Revealing his past indiscretions during the Anglo-Egyptian War of 1882 let us understand Drake’s character leaving just Captain Homer Jackson (Adam Rothenberg) and Detective Edmund Reid (Matthew Macfadyen) to have their pasts revealed. This week offered varying parts to add to the ever growing picture of both of the characters jigsaw puzzle past but didn’t allow us what we grasp for, that will be left to the final two episodes. ‘Tournament of Shadows’ offer something different to what you might expect from Ripper Street, stepping from the toll of murder as the greed and despicable desire of a man controlled by lust, money and revenge, Ripper Street went political with the depiction of anarchists, unionists, spies and double agents; all surrounding the London Dock Strike of 1889. The ability of the writers to create eight episodes that differ so vastly, on scale of not only plot but emotion and draw, is staggeringly spectacular.

Beginning with a death of a seemingly unimportant person as we have come to know from Ripper Street, a Jewish man is killed in what is claimed to be an accidental explosion but it is not only the explosion that is not what it seems. The victim, Joshua Bloom (Ferdinand Kingsley), is actually an anarchist who was being watched by Special Branch. Linked with the striking workers, Bloom is classed as a disease by Commissioner James Monro (Michael McElhatton), who claims that, “None of us are safe from this leftist cancer.” Reid holds a degree of sympathy to the workers for he acknowledges their rights to strike for better pay and that it is simply a handful of trouble makers to spoil the unionists image. Things grow ever more suspicious as Bloom is shown to have been killed before the bomb exploded. Reid’s story spirals through unionists, radicals anarchists, Russian spies, corruption, racism and the fear of the left.

Jackson is forced to go undercover as a striker due to his history as a Pinkerton, causing a rift between he and Reid to widen as he opposes the idea and Reid threatens to arrest him if he does not comply. This has been common place over the last few weeks as their completely different personalities have clashed, a feature that in my mind looks to be leading to the climax as to Jackson’s story. Don’t get me wrong for I really enjoy the interactions and overall make-up of our H Division triple entente but what, in my eyes, constitutes the excitement of our leads is their differences; see Jackson’s purpose of being a ‘whore-mongering,’ boozing, layabout contrasting the straight-faced, law upholding personas of Reid and Drake which causes frays to form in their friendship, if you can call it so.

Force of Firth: Nicole Kidman sends for Britain's heart-throb He's the ideal husband for the millions of women who go to see his films, and to many of his leading ladies PAUL GALLAGHER (INDEPENDENT)

He is arguably Britain's greatest living heart-throb. Millions consider him their dream husband, and Nicole Kidman is no different. Unlike anyone else, the Oscar-winning actress is in a position to live her Colin Firth fantasy not just once, but twice.

No sooner had filming ended on the upcoming Second World War drama The Railway Man, in which they play a married couple, than cameras begin rolling in London this week on the pair's next project.

Kidman was the first to sign up to play the lead in Before I Go to Sleep, based on the S J Watson novel about a woman who wakes up every morning with no memory. She was followed by the Zero Dark Thirty star Mark Strong. But the Australian wanted only one man to play her on-screen husband, again.

Strong told The Independent on Sunday that he was looking forward to working with Firth and Kidman: "They're teaming up again. Colin plays Nicole's husband and I play her doctor. It's all being filmed in London."

Rowan Joffe, who wrote The American and 28 Weeks Later, has written the screenplay and is directing. Strong added: "It's a very, good script, a really good thriller. It's a nice one to do."

Before I Go to Sleep would have been the third Firth/Kidman movie if Firth hadn't dropped out of Chan-wook Park's English-language debut film Stoker, which previewed at last month's Sundance Film Festival. But Kidman was not to be denied a second time.

Since his breakthrough performance as Mr Darcy in the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice almost 20 years ago, Firth has gone on to melt the hearts of a slew Hollywood's leading ladies. His eco-activism has earned him another set of swooning admirers.

Though he may be no George Clooney or Brad Pitt, Firth has utilized his old-school charm to turn himself into an unlikely sex symbol. Initially bemused at the "mass hysteria" that followed his emergence from that lake in clinging breeches, he has spoken of the difficulties in filming love scenes with some of the world's most beautiful women.

As charming off-screen as on, he famously got down on one knee for Meryl Streep at last year's Baftas, to pick up her Jimmy Choo stiletto after it fell off when The Iron Lady star climbed the stairs to collect her award for best actress. Streep gave her Mamma Mia! co-star a kiss on the lips for his act of chivalry, which enabled her to put the shoe back on before delivering her acceptance speech.

"That couldn't have gone worse," Streep joked. Millions of women begged to differ.

Cameron Diaz gushed about playing opposite Firth in last year's Coen brothers' comedy Gambit, while Renée Zellweger, Julianne Moore and Scarlett Johansson have all been equally besotted.

Helen Mirren even joked last month when receiving a star along the Hollywood Walk of Fame next to her fellow Brit: "I couldn't be prouder and more happy that I'm actually going to finally lie next to Colin Firth, something I've been wanting to do for a very long time."

Firth has laughed off claims in the past that he keeps falling for his leading ladies. The 52-year-old has a 22-year-old son, William, from his relationship with the Canadian actress Meg Tilly, whom he met on the set of Valmont. He briefly dated his Pride and Prejudice co-star Jennifer Ehle, before starting a relationship with Livia Giuggioli, an Italian documentary maker whom he met in Colombia in 1996 while filming the TV series Nostromo. They have two sons, Luca and Matteo.

‘Pride and Prejudice’ bicentenary: Who’s your favorite Darcy? (poll) By Marama Whyte at 1:00 pm, January 29, 2013 - @maramawhyte (HYPABLE)

It’s the role of a lifetime – the chance to steam up the screen as Regency heart-throb Mr. Darcy in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. We’ve seen many Darcys over the years, but who was the best? Now you get to decide.

Yesterday was the bicentenary of the publication of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. There’s no need to be scandalised by our blatant objectification of these leading men, we did the literary appreciation and analysis part yesterday, so now we can get to the really important matter – who was the hottest Mr. Darcy? Ladies and gentlemen, get your votes ready.

First, straight to the source. What did Austen have to say about Darcy in Pride and Prejudice?

“…Mr. Darcy soon drew the attention of the room by his fine, tall person, handsome features, noble mien; and the report which was in general circulation within five minutes after his entrance, of his having ten thousand a year.

The gentlemen pronounced him to be a fine figure of a man, the ladies declared he was much handsomer than Mr. Bingley, and he was looked at with great admiration for about half the evening, till his manners gave a disgust which turned the tide of his popularity; for he was discovered to be proud, to be above his company, and above being pleased; and not all his large estate in Derbyshire could then save him from having a most forbidding, disagreeable countenance, and being unworthy to be compared with his friend.”

Matthew Macfadyen Tribute - filmography 1997-2013

The "Darcylicious" Matthew Macfadyen
