'Sherlock' Season 5 Air Date, Spoilers: Will Benedict Cumberbatch And Martin Freeman Reprise Their Roles?

EconoTimes reported that Sherlock Season 5 is very unlikely to premiere soon due to many personal and technical reasons. One major reason why the imminent fifth installment is not dropping any time soon is because of the tainted friendship of series main stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.

Followers of the two actors can recall how they previously shaded each other. Freeman voiced his aversion at fans' unrealistic expectations for the series and how they responded to the series' fourth installment. Cumberbatch did not like his co-star's statement and even described it as "pathetic." This, then, made fans speculate that Sherlock Season 5 might not happen at all.

Freeman, however, made it clear that he is very appreciative of the things the series had done to the fans, staff, and cast. Despite the alleged spat, showrunners Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat are still interested in doing Sherlock Season 5.
"Well, we're never not talking to each other because we're friends! We hang out," Moffat told CinemaBlend when asked about the possibility of having Sherlock Season 5. "We've never said necessarily goodbye to Sherlock. No, we'll see. We'll see," the series creator added.
What most fans do not know is that Moffat and Gattis are, currently, doing a new series titled Dracula, which is a project in collaboration with BBC and Netflix. This, according to the same report, is also one of the major hindrances that prevent them from working on Sherlock Season 5.

Benedict Cumberbatch: Actors shouldn't take jobs where their female co-stars aren't paid equally

Benedict Cumberbatch, known for playing Marvel's Dr. Strange and the BBC's Sherlock Holmes, suggested in a recent interview that male actors — including himself — should turn down roles in productions in which women are not paid equally.

"Look at your quotas. Ask what women are being paid, and say: 'If she's not paid the same as the men, I'm not doing it,'" Cumberbatch said in an interview with Radio Times Sunday while promoting his latest series, "Patrick Melrose."

Cumberbatch hopes to enact this policy at his new production company, SunnyMarch, as well.

"I'm proud that [business partner] Adam [Ackland] and I are the only men in our production company," he said. "Our next project is a female story with a female lens about motherhood, in a time of environmental disaster. If it's centered around my name, to get investors, then we can use that attention for a raft of female projects."

He says that focusing on women-centric stories is both the right thing to do, and good business.

"Equal pay and a place at the table are the central tenets of feminism," said Cumberbatch, who has long spoken about his identity as a feminist.

Benedict Cumberbatch Interview

By Thom Yorke

It seems like a lot more than seven years have gone by since Benedict Cumberbatch first donned his deerstalker as Sherlock Holmes, the alarmingly incisive yet socially inept detective in the BBC series that catapulted his Hollywood career. That’s because, in the ensuing time, the London-born actor has graduated from fan-girl obsession to franchise superstar, while steadily appearing in a succession of prestige projects in theater, film, and television. His mix of gravitas and humility works exceptionally well in fantastical worlds: as Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness (2013); as Smaug the dragon and the Necromancer in The Hobbit film series (2012, 2013, 2014); and as Dr. Stephen Strange in Marvel’s Doctor Strange (2016), a role to which he will return in next year’s Avengers: Infinity War. Back on planet Earth, Cumberbatch has a knack for inhabiting the minds of geniuses, empathetically depicting WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in The Fifth Estate in 2013; Alan Turing in The Imitation Game the following year (for which he earned Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations); and, most recently, Thomas Edison in The Current War, in theaters next year.

Now 41, Cumberbatch is considered one of the most accomplished and ambitious actors of his generation. It would be an understatement to suggest that he has a serious streak, but as his friend, the legendary Radiohead rocker Thom Yorke, is determined to prove, all men—no matter how focused—contain multitudes.

THOM YORKE: I don’t have any chronology to my questions. My approach is a bit more random, a bit more Just Seventeen [an out-of-print British teen magazine]. I actually want to start with the year you taught in a monastery in Darjeeling when you were 19. How was that experience?

BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH: It was in an exiled Tibetan community, just outside of Darjeeling, on the border. It was a little hill station town. I was one of five teachers who had done a training course. It was extraordinary, but it was quite an isolated experience.

YORKE: How long did you do that?

CUMBERBATCH: It was five months. I spent half a year working odd jobs to build up funds for the airfare and to pay for the course. You’re not paid for the teaching; you’re paid in experience. You’re surrounded by the monks and their lives. It was a small monastery, and the top floor was the temple. I was living on the bottom floor, which was pretty damp and had huge spiders. I think it was just near the end of the rainy season; I can’t remember, but it was cold. And because it was so high up, you would open your window, and the clouds were like dry ice rolling across your desk. Nature was ever present; that was gobsmackingly beautiful, as was the spirit and nature and philosophy and way of life of these monks.

YORKE: It sounds like you absorbed a lot of that, just by being there. You didn’t have to study it.

CUMBERBATCH: Exactly, it just seeped in. The personalities of the monks were louder than any lesson.

2018 Golden Globes: With Riz Ahmed out, Benedict Cumberbatch or Ewan McGregor may get revenge after Emmy loss

Gold Derby

TV  October 24, 2017 2:00P

At last year’s Golden Globe Awards “The Night Of” earned three nominations: Best Movie/Miniseries as well as Best Movie/Mini Actor for its two stars, Riz Ahmed and John Turturro. Though it went home empty handed at that event, Ahmed was recently able to win a Primetime Emmy for his leading role, which was among the five total prizes the crime drama took home from the television academy.

Since “The Night Of” already competed at the Golden Globes last year, it won’t be in contention this year. Therefore Ahmed won’t be able to repeat his victory from the Emmys, opening the door for a whole new winner in the Best Movie/Mini Actor race, including several he defeated at the Emmys in September. In the past 16 years the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has chosen a wide variety of winners in this category, ranging from movie stars to veterans to popular Brits to actors in biographical roles. Here are six strong contenders who fit at least one of those molds.

Here are six strong contenders who fit at least one of those molds.

Benedict Cumberbatch, “Sherlock: The Lying Detective”

He has contended at the Globes twice before. The first time was in this category for the second season of “Sherlock” in 2013, where he lost to Kevin Costner for “Hatfields & McCoys.” The second time was on the film side for his performance as Alan Turing in “The Imitation Game,” where he lost Best Film Drama Actor to Eddie Redmayne for “The Theory of Everything.” If Cumberbatch is nominated again this year, would a third time be the charm? HFPA members have shown love to Brits in this category six times in the past 16 years, including last year’s champ Tom Hiddleston (“The Night Manager”).

Jude Law, “The Young Pope”

After having been nominated three times before on the film side for his performances in “The Talented Mr. Ripley” (Best Film Supporting Actor, 2000), “A.I. Artificial Intelligence” (Best Film Supporting Actor, 2002), and “Cold Mountain” (Best Film Drama Actor, 2004), Law’s performance as Pope Pius XIII could make him a first-time nominee on the TV side. Like Cumberbatch, he is a Brit, and HFPA members love to award them in this category every once in a while.

EXCLUSIVE: Benedict Cumberbatch is reteaming with BBC One and Masterpiece for the adaptation of Ian McEwan’s award-winning 1987 novel The Child In Time. Cumberbatch will star in and executive produce the one-off 90-minute drama written by Stephen Butchard.

Cumberbatch, who is coming off the fourth season of BBC One/Masterpiece sleuthing series Sherlock, will play Stephen Lewis, a successful children’s book author whose daughter suddenly goes missing in the lyrical and heartbreaking exploration of love, loss and the power of things unseen.

The film will explore the dark territory of a marriage devastated by the loss of a child. Her absence sets Stephen and his wife on diverging paths as both struggle with an all-consuming grief. With the passage of time, a balance of sorts returns, until hope surfaces and triumphs unexpectedly.

Cumberbatch says, “I read the novel years ago and it stayed with me — profound, beautiful and very moving. Only Ian McEwan could write about loss with such telling honesty. We’re very excited to have Stephen Butchard’s subtle and brilliant adaptation, and in Julian Farino we have an extraordinary director who delivers emotional truth. I’m so proud The Child In Time will be the first drama produced by SunnyMarch TV

Benedict Cumberbatch sports some heavy stubble as he films Sherlock Holmes scenes in a stark contrast to the character's usual clean shaven look

DAILY MAIL
By JJ NATTRASS FOR MAILONLINE
PUBLISHED: 06:25 EST, 1 June 2016 | UPDATED: 11:46 EST, 1 June 2016

He's busy filming the much-anticipated fourth series of the BBC's hit-series, Sherlock.

But Benedict Cumberbatch's roguish detective appeared to have lost his razor during his latest escapade, as the cast and crew of the detective drama filmed scenes in South Wales.

Shooting scenes in Cardiff City Centre, the 39-year-old actor sported a heavy layer of stubble as he filmed scenes alongside two elder gents - presumably integral to the plot of the episode.

Finding the moment: Chatting away to the crew in-between takes, the actor looked to be searching for the right inspiration to take into the scene

Clad in full-costume, and sporting the character's well worn great coat, a navy shirt, dark trousers and black Oxford shoes, Holmes was instantly recognizable amide the hub-bub of cast and crew.

However, it seems that the latest shoot for the series sees Sherlock at his wit's end, as the appeared slightly weary and exhausted - something further emphasized by his loose stance and open-neck shirt.

'Sherlock series four - here we go again!': Filming has continued at full-pace following Sherlock co-creators Steven Moffat and Gatiss confirmation that the show was returning in April

In a statement, Steven and Mark said: 'Sherlock series four - here we go again!

'Whatever else we do, wherever we all go, all roads lead back to Baker Street - and it always feels like coming home.

'Ghosts of the past are rising in the lives of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson bringing adventure, romance and terror in their wake.

'This is the story we've been telling from the beginning. A story about to reach its climax.'
Benedict said he was 'thrilled' to be back as the detective.

He said: 'I can't wait for everyone to see season four. But you will have to wait... though not for long... And it will be worth it.'

Series four will return to BBC later this year with three feature length episodes.

Has Sherlock got a new sidekick? Benedict Cumberbatch seen on set with four-legged friend

THE MIRROR
BY NATALIE CORNER
4 May, 2016

Sherlock 's squad might be growing if these set pictures are anything to go by.

Actor Benedict Cumberbatch - who plays the titular character - was spotted filming new scenes for the next series of the drama alongside a dog.

The bloodhound looked very professional and calm as it was kept on a lead held by the Dr Strange star.

Benedict seemed thrilled to have the animal on set and spent time petting it in between takes.

Unfortunately we're going to have to wait until Christmas before we find out what role the four-legged best friend will have.

Martin Freeman, who plays John Watson, was also on set alongside his co-star and spent time coo-ing over a baby.

It's not known whether the young tot was in scenes with John but according to Digital Spy the baby could play a big role.

Watson's wife Mary, played by Martin's actual wife Amanda Abbington, was pregnant in the last series so perhaps she gives birth.

Ten Actors Who Played Sherlock Holmes Through History

THE ANGLOTOPIA MAGAZINE
April 11, 2016 By John Rabon

WGHolmes

Sherlock Holmes is one of the most famous literary character of the last 150 years, ever since he first appeared in the 1887 edition of Beeton’s Christmas Annual in “A Study in Scarlet”.  Holmes has been portrayed on stage, screen, and television over 250 times since his creation, with the first being William Gillette in a play written by himself and Holmes originator Arthur Conan Doyle.  He’s one of the most depicted characters in the world and that tends to attract some of the best in the acting profession.  Examine our own list of ten of the best Sherlock Holmes actors from the first to the most recent and let us know your own favorites in the comments.

Sherlock Holmes, a play written in four parts by Doyle and Gillette, was first performed in 1899 in New York City.  Doyle had previously tried his hand at writing a play, but little came of it until he was approached by Gillette, an American actor who even put on a deerstalker cap and a cape to convince the author to work with him.  After several films were made with various other actors in the role, Gillette tried his hand at a film adaptation of the play in 1916.  He would perform the role at least twice more in radio dramas.

BASIL RATHBONE

Appearing in his first Holmes film not long after Wortner, Rathbone starred in 1939’s adaptation of The Hound of the Baskervilles.  In fact, it was Rathbone’s success with the film in the United States that caused Wortner’s adaptation of the “Silver Blaze” to change its name to Murder at the Baskervilles for its American release in 1941 (despite having nothing to do with the Baskervilles).  Rathbone has played Sherlock Holmes the most times in films with a total of fifteen from 1939 to 1946.  He even made a posthumous cameo in Disney’s The Great Mouse Detective as the voice of Holmes, whose 221B Baker Street address also housed the animated protagonist.

JEREMY BRETT

Granada Sherlock Holmes

Besides Wilmer, Brett is considered by many to be one of the best television actors to play Holmes, having done so in four series running for more than a decade from 1983 to 1994.  During that time, Brett also performed in a stage show titled The Secrets of Sherlock Holmes from 1988 to 1989.  Brett described Holmes as “the hardest part I have ever played—harder than Hamlet or Macbeth”, and despite fears of typecasting, he appeared 41 times as the detective before ill health caused him to retire from acting, passing away only months after his final episode aired.  Brett’s performance developed many personality ticks for the character from his laughter to his hand gestures as the actor wanted to bring more passion to what appeared to him to be an obsessive and depressive character.  Cementing his reputation as Holmes, Brett won a poll in 2014 of the best Holmes actors, beating out the next three, more-recent, entries.

BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH

With Holmes back in film, it wasn’t long before the detective returned to television as well, this time with an adaptation brought into the present day courtesy of Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss.  Moffat was auditioning for Holmes and Doctor Who at the same time, and ended up casting two men who would become world-famous for their portrayals, Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Matt Smith as the Doctor. Alongside Martin Freeman as John Watson, Cumberbatch’s performance is the opposite of Downey’s, embracing the character’s nature as a “high-functioning sociopath”.  While Cumberbatch had been acting for some time before Sherlock, his portrayal has made him a household name and led to other projects such as Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, The Imitation Game, and this year’s Doctor Strange.

Sherlock writer says Benedict Cumberbatch 'doesn't need' the show now

BBC

Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch

The co-creator and writer of BBC One's Sherlock has told Newsbeat that it's getting harder to persuade Benedict Cumberbatch to do the show.

Steven Moffat says it's because Benedict and Martin Freeman - who plays Watson - don't need it.
They both have successful movie careers which means their schedules are packed.

"They don't need Sherlock anymore. So we have to persuade them to do it - which is fair enough," he says.

Speaking at the BAFTA Television Awards nominees party in London last night Steven Moffat says he was surprised they signed up to a fourth series.

"They are very serious about it, they do love it very much," he says.

"I didn't think we actually thought we'd get a fourth series out of them."

But he revealed this year's Christmas special has already been recorded and series four is expected at some point in the future - when it's been filmed.

Steven Moffat also writes and produces Doctor Who and says it's usual to have to persuade actors to do shows.

Sherlock co-creator confirms special is set in Victorian London

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
BY JAMES HIBBERD • @JAMESHIBBERD
March 16, 2015

For the eagerly anticipated Sherlock special episode, Holmes and Watson are essentially going back in time.

Co-creator Steven Moffat has now confirmed the special will take place in Victorian London, validating fan assumptions about the episode. Last month the show’s stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were spotted filming Sherlock in 19th century clothes, causing fans to wonder if perhaps the crime-fighting duo attended a costume ball, or ir perhaps it was just some kind of dream sequence within the special. But no: The 90-minute episode literally takes place more than 100 years ago.

Martin Clunes interview: The actor stars as the Sherlock Holmes creator in Arthur & George

INDEPENDENT
GERARD GILBERT  Author Biography
Wednesday 25 February 2015

"When I tell people I'm playing Arthur Conan Doyle on TV, some of them ask, 'Oh, is Benedict Cumberbatch in it?'," says Martin Clunes, illustrating a common blurring of distinction between the creator of Sherlock Holmes and his creation. Sitting in a carriage on a steam train on the Bluebell Railway line in Sussex (the same locomotives used in Downton Abbey, as it happens), with Clunes suited, booted and cloaked in full Victorian-Holmesian outwear, it's easy to understand the confusion. "London taxi drivers tell me that American tourists have sort of heard of Conan Doyle," he says, as we chug through the countryside, "but they think he was a prime minister. Mind you, they also think Sherlock was prime minister."

So to be clear: Clunes is filming a scene in ITV's new three-hour adaptation of Julian Barnes's 2005 novel Arthur & George, in which Barnes fictionalised real events from 1903 when Conan Doyle – rich and famous from the proceeds of his Sherlock Holmes stories, but widowed and bored – took it on himself to investigate what he saw as a miscarriage of justice. Staffordshire solicitor George Edalji, the Anglo-Indian son of a vicar – and the victim apparently of long-standing racial prejudice – had been convicted of mutilating livestock. "There's no way he could have cut those animals," says Clunes. "He was a bookish, disabled, poor-eye-sighted solicitor."

Clunes's wife, and the co-owner of a production company that also makes the actor's enduring ITV hit Doc Martin, Philippa Braithwaite, optioned Barnes's novel – with no real intention, she tells me, of casting her husband as Conan Doyle. "It wasn't written for Martin; it was just because I loved the book," she says. "I didn't know anything about Conan Doyle. I just picked up this book and it was a real case that just seemed so bizarre. And this was before any of the big Sherlock Holmes revivals had started really, so it was a coincidence that Sherlock had become so huge while we were working on this."

"I knew she was beavering away on this and slugging it out with Julian Barnes's agent and trying to satisfy them," says Clunes. "When I read the book I couldn't instantly see what Philippa had seen because it doesn't scream out 'televise me' when you read it, but she's obviously much smarter than I am." Peter Fincham, director of television at ITV, had, in his previous job as controller of BBC1, tried to persuade the channel to film Barnes's novel, but had been told it was "BBC2". "In the way that people say those things," says Clunes.

Martin Clunes is Arthur Conan Doyle in trailer for Arthur & George

DIGITAL SPY
By Katy FinbowTuesday, Feb 10 2015, 10:36am EST

Martin Clunes stars as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in a new trailer for ITV's Arthur & George.

The three-part series is based on the Julian Barnes novel of the same name, covering true events in the life of the Sherlock Holmes creator.

Following the death of his wife, Conan Doyle is encouraged to find something to occupy himself with. He soon discovers the case of George Edalji (Arsher Ali), who has been wrongly accused of several high-profile crimes.

Accompanied by his servant Alfred 'Woodie' Wood (Charles Edwards), the novelist sets out to prove George Edalji's innocence.

The series also takes a look at Conan Doyle's relationship with younger woman Jean Leckie, who eventually became his second wife.

Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch eyes up LA mansion

SUNDAY EXPRESS
Sun, December 21, 2014
By MIKE PARKER

IT IS a long way from 221B Baker Street, but Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch has got this multi-million pound mansion under his magnifying glass as a potential home in Hollywood.

The British actor, hotly tipped for Oscar glory for his latest film, may have discovered the perfect residence for a fast-rising star.

Cumberbatch, 38, who last month announced his engagement to 36-year-old theatre and opera director Sophie Hunter, has just viewed a magnificent £10.8million Tuscan-style villa in one of LA’s most sought-after areas.

And as our exclusive photos show, the seven-bedroom, nine-bathroom property, nestling in 2.5 acres of perfectly manicured land with sweeping panoramic views, has more than enough cachet for the celebrity couple.

An estate agent involved in sales negotiations told the Sunday Express Cumberbatch “was almost doing backflips” when he first saw the Hidden Hills home.

Neighbours include fellow Britons Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne as well as Hunger Games actress Jennifer Lawrence plus singer Jessica Simpson.

The agent revealed: “Benedict’s representatives have indicated he is ready to make an initial offer which will not be too far off the asking price, so he could be moving in early in the New Year.”

Newly engaged Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter put on an affectionate display at Moet British Independent Film Awards

Supportive: Sophie Hunter accompanied her fiance Benedict Cumberbatch as he attended the Moet British Independent Film Awards at Old Billingsgate Market on Sunday to receive his Variety Award

He only announced his engagement last month and things just keep getting better for Benedict Cumberbatch.

Just a few days after his casting as Marvel’s Doctor Strange was announced, the 38-year-old actor walked the red carpet at the Moet British Independent Film Awards at Old Billingsgate Market on Sunday with his beautiful fiancee Sophie Hunter.

Another highlight of Benedict's skyrocketing career came as he was due to be presented with the Variety Award, which recognises a talent who has helped to focus the international spotlight on the UK, at the annual bash, so it's not surprising Sophie was present to cheer him on.

'She's proud of my work, she's proud of me, and she loves me,' he said. 'That's the bottom line, isn't it? That's one of the reasons it's a good fit. It could be a really difficult thing, but she's just so in command of it.'

However, while the star was open about his admiration for his future wife, he was mum on whether or not they'll be quick to start a family, saying: 'I've got to be very coy on that one. Very silent.'

But Benedict was keen to reassure fans that life does go on, now that he has become engaged to Sophie .

Colin Firth, Jude Law and Nicole Kidman steam in to film latest blockbuster

THE HERALD

Herald Series:

Didcot may have lost three of its iconic cooling towers but it has kept its appeal for A-List celebrities.

Hollywood stars Jude Law and Nicole Kidman have been spotted filming their latest movie at the town’s heritage railway centre.

Along with Colin Firth and Dominic West, they are shooting new biopic Genius, about the man who published Ernest Hemingway and F Scott Fitzgerald.

Mr Law, who plays American novelist Thomas Clayton Wolfe, and Ms Kidman, who plays his mistress Aline Bernstein, were seen shooting scenes at the railway centre in the rain on Friday afternoon.

A member of staff at the centre said: “Colin Firth, Jude Law and Nicole Kidman were all here to film scenes for Genius but we have been told not to talk about it.

“We think the film will come out some time next year.”

Centre manager Roger Orchard was unavailable for comment.

It is not the first time Jude Law has filmed scenes at the centre.

He and Robert Downey Jnr spent three days there in 2010 to film scenes for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, the sequel to 2009’s box office hit, Sherlock Holmes.

Residents were warned then not to be alarmed by explosions coming from the site as they recreated a munitions factory in the main engine shed.

'Sherlock' Co-Creator Tells Fans to Expect "Tragedy" in Season 4

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
10:24 PM PST 11/20/2014 by Abid Rahman

Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss has some bad news for fans of the hit BBC drama, telling them to "expect tragedy" during the forthcoming fourth season.

Speaking to the Radio Times on Thursday, Gatiss, who also plays Mycroft Holmes in the show, said, "You can always expect tragedy as well as adventure, that’s just how it goes." He refused to reveal whether that meant the death of John Watson's wife, Mary, as happens in Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories.

The show, which stars man-of-the-moment Benedict Cumberbatch in the titular role and The Hobbit's Martin Freeman as Watson, has Freeman's real-life partner, Amanda Abbington, co-starring as Mary Watson. Freeman himself has speculated before that Mary would likely meet her end, telling the Daily Telegraph, “While we play fast and loose with the original stories, we generally follow the trajectory of what Conan Doyle did. … So [John] gets married, and then Mary dies — so at some point presumably she’ll die.”

LONDON — Benedict Cumberbatch is to receive the Variety Award at the Moet British Independent Film Awards on Dec. 7 at Old Billingsgate, London.

The award recognizes a director, actor, writer or producer who has helped to put the international spotlight on the U.K. Paul Greengrass was given the award last year. Previous recipients include Jude Law, Kenneth Branagh, Liam Neeson, Daniel Craig and Helen Mirren.

Cumberbatch’s latest film, “The Imitation Game,” has been nominated in four categories at the British Independent Film Awards: British independent film; screenplay for Graham Moore; actress for Keira Knightley; and actor for Cumberbatch.

Cumberbatch commented: “I am delighted to receive this prestigious award, and would like to thank Variety and the Moet British Independent Film Awards for this incredible honor. It is made even more special by the recognition of ‘The Imitation Game’ in this year’s nominations, a film I am very proud to be a part of.”

Cumberbatch is best known for playing the title role of Sherlock Holmes in “Sherlock,” Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss’ adaption of the Arthur Conan Doyle books. The role won him an Emmy this year.

So far this year, Cumberbatch has been filming “Black Mass,” playing Bill Bulger alongside Johnny Depp, and Shere Khan in Andy Serkis’ “Jungle Book.” He is also part of the voicecast in DreamWorks Animation’s “Penguins of Madagascar,” which is released later this year.

He is currently shooting “The Hollow Crown” for the BBC and Neal Street Productions, in which he plays Richard III for director Dominic Cooper, and alongside Judi Dench.

Next he will shoot “Lost City of Z,” based on David Grann’s novel for director James Gray, where he will play British explorer Percy Fawcett, who set out to discover the City of Z in the Amazon in the 1920s.

Martin Clunes films new series in Nettlebed

HENLEY STANDARD

ACTOR Martin Clunes filmed scenes for a new TV drama series at the Sue Ryder hospice in Nettlebed.

The Doc Martin star and Men Behaving Badly visited Joyce Grove for the filming of Arthur and George, a three-part adaptation of Julian Barnes’ novel for ITV. He plays celebrated author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Graham Campbell, head of support services at the hospice, said: “They were here just for a day doing some scenes inside the hall and reception area. They set up from 7am, started filming about 10am and finished about 6.30pm.

“There were a lot of people watching as a lot of families had come in to visit their relatives.

“All the crew — the runners, the assistant directors — were charming. They were very nice to our patients and relatives that were held up for 30 seconds while they took a shot.”

The film crew also captured some exterior shots of the Jacobean-style manor house, which was built in the 1900s and was once the home of James Bond creator Ian Fleming.

Mr Campbell said the producers approached the hospice, saying the wood paneling and huge fireplaces made it an ideal location for the production. The drama is based on an intriguing series of true events in the life of the Sherlock Holmes’ creator.

Conan Doyle recaptures his zest for life by pursuing and challenging a notorious miscarriage of justice — the case of George Edalji, a hard-working solicitor and son of a vicar.

Arthur and George also features Conan Doyle’s relationship with Jean Leckie, a much younger woman with whom he enjoyed a platonic relationship while his wife was alive. Jean eventually became his second wife.

Other members of the cast include Arsher Ali, star of Four Lions and Silent Witness, as George Edalji, Art Malik, who appeared in The Jewel in the Crown, as his father, the Reverend Shapurji Edalji, and Emma Fielding, star of Silk and DCI Banks, as his mother Charlotte Edalji.

Steve November, ITV’s director of drama, said: “Arthur and George explores what we think we know about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s life. It’s a fascinating insight into the man who was to become one of the most famous of his age.
