Martin Freeman, Simon Pegg, Rosamund Pike:'The World's End' review: A fresh, funny pub crawl (review)

Comedy-adventure. Starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Martin Freeman. Directed by Edgar Wright. (R. 109 minutes.)

One of the weirder aspects of adolescence is that it's possible to have close friends you don't like, that you're just thrown in with. In "The World's End," one of those friends comes back into the lives of his four former high school buddies, two decades later, hoping to re-create the most glorious day of his youth, an all-night drinking binge. And they give in to the force of his personality and agree to join him.

For about an hour, "The World's End" is the story of four settled men, in early middle age, dutifully following their old school friend from pub to pub. Nick Frost, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine and Eddie Marsan are all talented actors, with Frost and Freeman particularly skilled in comedy, and together the five principals create the sense of men who have known each other for many years. The banter is effortless; the comedy flows.

Then the movie takes a turn into a rather unexpected direction, one foretold in the coming attractions trailer, and one that will probably be discussed in most reviews, but I won't do it here, because I enjoyed the surprise. To state it generally, the movie goes from a character study to something that is quite nutty, and yet it loses nothing in the transition. The characters stay vivid, the interaction essential, and the issues introduced remain on the table and continue to be developed. There's just this whole other crazy thing going on at the same time.

MARTIN FREEMAN, SIMON PEGG, ROSAMUND PIKE: The World's End Review: It's Barmageddon as Pegg's pub crawl turns into a dash to save mankind (MIRROR) BY MARK ADAMS

Barmagddon: Pegg and pals drink up

THE VERDICT

In Shaun of the Dead they tackled zombies, in Hot Fuzz they took on small-town police and mobsters but for their latest dose of laddish camaraderie Pegg, Frost and director Edgar Wright take on their biggest challenge – a pub crawl with the end of the world at stake. It is a film that has everything – excessive beer quaffing, hand-to-hand combat, romance, male bonding and the prospect that the end of their pub crawl might see these old, but rather mismatched, mates involved in a fight – not just for their future, but for the whole of mankind.

Pegg quite bravely leaves behind his warm-and-matey persona to play the rather obnoxious Gary King, a failure whose only real aspiration in life seems to be to gather his old pals for a drinking tour in the home town they haven’t visited for years. Against all the odds they agree to his suggestion, despite his one-time best friend Andy (Frost) falling out with him years before and Steven (Considine) still harbouring a grudge because Andy took the girl he was in love with. Oliver (Freeman) and Peter (Marsan) are not convinced by Andy’s plan but are willing to give it a go.

The pub crawl sees the false camaraderie hilariously demolished, especially when Oliver’s sister Sam (Pike), the woman Steven and Gary both lusted after, arrives on the scene.

It seems locals they thought unwelcoming have good reason to be.

It turns out they are actually aliens who have taken over the forms of townspeople, and they are not too happy with the boozy band.

When things get serious, sleeves are rolled up and pub fights ensue (with Frost an almost lithe martial arts machine) as they try to make it to The World’s End, and the climax of their majestic quest.

The actress wore a simple white dress by Victoria Beckham with some lace-style panels to the front and sides whch left her cleavage on show.

Benedict Cumberbatch Set To Speed Up Fans Excitement With Guest Appearance On Top Gear (E.) BY DEEPIKA RAJANI ON JULY 9, 2013

Benedict Cumberbatch looks set to get behind the wheel soon following the reports that he will soon be making a guest appearance on BBC's Top Gear.

Despite being busy with work, including filming scenes for the new series of Sherlock, Benedict will take time out of his hectic work schedule to take on the challenge called 'Star In A Reasonably Priced Car' set by Richard Hammond, Jeremy Clarkson and James May where he will be seen driving round a lap.

We'll be tuning in for that!

Speaking about Benedict's impending appearance on the show, the Mirror claimed a source saying: "It's great to have Benedict on the show and no doubt he'll want to do better than his Star Trek co-star Simon Pegg, who joined us in 2011.”

Whilst he may have been chosen for Top Gear, Benedict has reportedly admitted that he has missed out on playing the role of a "pin up" guy in the past because of his looks.

The actor, who has amassed a firm following of fans from his roles as Sherlock and a number of films, including Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy and Star Trek Into Darkness, is quoted by Now to have told TV magazine as quoted  recently that whilst he knows his looks have been the reason for him not getting parts, he's not too bothered by it.

World's End's Rosamund Pike a Hot MILF in Esquire UK (photos) English Actress's New Comedy Set for Release July 19 By The ImproperStaff, July

RosamundPike Esquire front Worlds Ends Rosamund Pike a Hot MILF in Esquire UK (photos)

This month, Pike will supply some of the eye candy for “The World’s End,” a doomsday comedy by Edgar Wright and British comedian and actor Simon Pegg.

Pike will play one of five old friends, including Pegg and Martin Freeman, who reunite after 20 years and decide to finish a pub crawl they started last time they got together. Only problem, aliens are invading the earth.

Although Pike may be known as a blonde bombshell, she had a classical English upbringing.

She’s only child of concert musicians and opera singers Caroline Friend and Julian Pike. Her father currently works as a professor of music and head of Operatic Studies at the Birmingham Conservatoire. She started acting as a teen but still managed to graduate from Oxford with a degree in English.

She has the range to play proper roles like the eldest Bennet sister in 2005′s Jane Austen classic, “Pride and Prejudice,” with Keira Knightley, Carey Mulligan and Jena Malone. Or in off-beat comedies like “The World’s End.”

“To be made to laugh is one of the greatest things on Earth and to be in the company of people who do that the best – like Simon and Nick – is the best,” Pike told Esquire. “It’s good for the soul.”

Her latest film debuts July 19.

Pike is so hot she had a two-year relationship with gay actor Simon Woods. She gave birth to her first child, a son, Solo in May 2012, with Robie Uniacke, whom she’s been dating since 2010.

Simon Pegg: Rosamund Pike's fillets stuck to me added: 5 Jul 2013 // by: Film-News.co.uk Newsdesk

Rosamund Pike

Simon Pegg bonded with Rosamund Pike after one of her "chicken fillets" kept "sticking to him" during a love scene.

The actors star together in Hector and the Search for Happiness and had to record while almost naked.

The problems they experienced left Simon happy to open up to her about anything.

Simon with Rosamund Pike

"We had to do quite a graphic love scene,” he told the latest edition of British Glamour magazine. “You wear these modesty things that cover your bits and for women you'll wear ones on the ends of your boobs so you don't look naked.

They were like chicken fillets and one kept sticking to me.”

The motion picture, which also stars Toni Collette, tells the tale of a psychiatrist who searches the globe to find the secret of contentment.

It is released in cinemas next year.

“Once you've done that with someone, you can really talk about anything," Simon giggled.

Benedict Cumberbatch: STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Review (5/5)

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS (USA/12A/132mins)
Directed by J.J. Abrams. Starring Chris Pine, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Alice Eve, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Peter Weller, Bruce Greenwood, Nolan North.

THE PLOT: We open on a volcanic planet, sometime back in the future, and with the good ship Enterprise hovering nearby, the impulsive, impertinent Captain James Kirk (Pine) and Lieutenant Commander Bones McCoy (Urban) flee the angry natives through a Dr. Seuss landscape as the highly logical Commander Spock (Quinto) tries to cap a volcano that is all set to wipe out this indigenous race. A last-minute rescue - wherein these simple natives witness the Enterprise in full flight - means a swift demotion for Kirk, and a reassignment for Spock. Luckily, there's a mad doctor on the loose, and he seems set on wiping out the entire Starfleet. With the blessing of Admiral Marcus (Weller), the boys are reunited with their crew, as they go after rogue super-agent John Harrison (Cumberbatch), hiding out deep in Kling-On country...

THE VERDICT: Say what you like about the big, fat corporate branding being force-fed to us by the major studios, when it comes to big, fat entertaining franchise movies, dang, it seems to be working. Last week's Iron Man 3 was a giddy blast, and now, along comes the second of the rebooted Star Trek outings - and it might just be one of the year's finest films. J.J. Abrams once again sets his phaser to stun. And he does. Magnificently.

There's hardly time to breathe with In Darkness before you're hit with another thrill-ride, well-crafted quip or that all-important emotional punch - think Skyfall with holograms on. The alien-goes-to-Eton look of Benedict Cumberbatch makes for one delicious villain, whilst Pine, Quinto and the gang settle ever deeper into the roles they seem destined to play. Even the stock-character comedy accents of Yelchin (as Russian Tactical Officer Chekhov) and Pegg (as Scottish engineer Scotty) can't quite derail the sci-fi fantasy fun here. MajQa'.

Martin Freeman, Simon Pegg, Rosamund Pike: THE WORLD’S END Trailer is Here and It’s Awesome Posted by Karin Abcarians - 05/08/2013 - (SCREEN INVASION)

The first trailer for Edgar Wright’s The World’s End has arrived! It’s hilarious, weird and completely awesome! It stars Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine, Eddie Marsan, Rosamund Pike and is of course directed by Edgar Wright with writing by him and Simon Pegg.

Here’s the synopsis of the film: Director Edgar Wright and actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost reunite for a third film following the successes “Shaun of the Dead” (2004) and “Hot Fuzz” (2007).

In “The World’s End,” 20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hellbent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by Gary King (Simon Pegg), a 40-year-old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their hometown and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub – The World’s End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realize the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s. Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries.

Benedict Cumberbatch: What brought him to tears on Red Carpet (ACCESS HOLLYWOOD)

Chris Pine, Alice Eve, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and Benedict Cumberbatch attend the UK Premiere of ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ at The Empire Cinema on May 2, 2013 in London, EnglandCaption
LONDON, UK -- Benedict Cumberbatch admitted he was brought to tears on the red carpet at the London premiere of “Star Trek Into Darkness,” last week.
The British actor, who joined the “Star Trek” world for its newest installment (playing mysterious bad guy John), revealed that overhearing his co-stars Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto sing his praises on the press line moved him deeply.
“When I heard them saying nice things on the red carpet… that was the thing that really struck [me] to my core, and it got to a point — it was like a tipping point, I’d say, where I was signing something [and] I heard Zachary saying something very complimentary about me and I started to cry,” Benedict revealed to Access Hollywood’s Scott Mantz at the film’s junket over the weekend in London. “I was looking down and signing and this fan said, ‘Are you OK?’ I said, ‘Yeah, it’s really windy out here, my eyes are stinging

Benedict, the star of PBS Masterpiece series “Sherlock,” said joining the “Star Trek” world (he called it the “Trekkieverse”) has been more rewarding than he could have imagined.
“The thing that really moved me, actually, was the new family that I have in this franchise, who I’m surrounded with. You really are only as good as the people you work with and I couldn’t have wished for a more welcoming and talented bunch of people,” Benedict said. “I was awestruck when I first met them. … [Chris and Zachary] filled those incredibly huge, iconic shoes, so superlatively in [the first film]. I really am in awe — and they’re contemporaries.”

BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH:I Accidentally Got A Crush On Benedict Cumberbatch Without Even Seeing Star Trek by Alexis Rhiannon (CRUSHABLE)

Guys, I have a confession to make: I’m not one of those girls who’s followed Benedict Cumberbatch‘s career the way I should have. Approximately twenty million people in my life have recommended that I watch the BBC’s Sherlock, but there are so many other things ahead of it in my Netflix queue that I just get overwhelmed. I get that a ton of people are obsessed with him, and that I probably would be too if I’d ever seen him in anything, but I haven’t and I’m not, so it was looking like I’d have to wait to see him as the villain in Star Trek Into Darkness to really be on board with the Cumberbitches train. OR NOT.

Sometimes, all it takes to fall into a desperate, one-sided crush with someone is watching a few of their interviews, and that’s what happened to me today. First I watched his co-stars Simon Pegg and Alice Eve gush over how amazing he was to work with and how ready he is to settle down. Alice is particularly effusive, saying that she thinks women love him so much because he gives off the vibe of ‘really wanting a family’, to which Simon added, ‘whereas Chris [Pine] wants lots of families.’ Ha, genius. I love it. You can watch that interview here:

ROSAMUND PIKE: FILMS IN 2013 INCLUDE THE WORLD'S END AND A LONG WAY DOWN (FAN SHARE) BY: ELIZABETH DARRELL

Rosamund Pike has had a busy couple of years, but she's yet to hit the jackpot with a big budget movie that manages to introduce her to audiences around the world. Although she was seen in 'Wrath of the Titans' and 'Jack Reacher' in the last two years, both geared to be international blockbusters, the films ended up underperforming and barely staying on anyone's radar.

However, Pike's seemed to veer away from those types of films of late, and her next few films show a lot of promise. Pike will first be seen in 'The World's End' in august, starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and Martin Freeman. The film deals with five friends who unite for an epic pub crawl, and end up becoming humanity's only hope for survival. Although people have been comparing this with the other apocalypse comedy 'This Is The End', it looks like both films have vastly different tones.

Benedict Cumberbatch: ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ Gets New UK Release Date One Week Ahead Of The U.S. By NANCY TARTAGLIONE, International Editor | Thursday, 7 March 2013 13:27 UK

The UK release of J.J. Abrams‘ Star Trek Into Darkness has officially been moved up by a week to May 9 when it will go out in IMAX 3D, 3D and 2D cinemas.

Paramount currently has the film set for a May 17 release in the States with IMAX 3D screenings on May 15. Simon Pegg, who plays Scotty in the film, just tweeted: “Looks like Star Trek Into Darkness will land in the UK first. Release date May 9th. That’s about 8 weeks away. Not long considering.”

British actor Benedict Cumberbatch spent a morning on the Star Trek set with cream smeared on his face after falling for a prank by his co-star Simon Pegg.

The two Brits are among the star-studded cast of Star Trek Into Darkness, and Pegg reveals he became the resident joker during filming.

And one prank fooled not only Cumberbatch, but Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana as well.

Pegg is quoted by Britain's Daily Mirror as saying, "I'm the biggest prankster. I convinced Benedict Cumberbatch that he had to wear special cream when we worked in this facility on the movie otherwise he'd get radiation poisoning. He, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana put it on.
