Beauty and the Beast's Luke Evans: 'Emma Watson has made Belle a strong, 21st century woman' "It's quite brilliant, what she's done with the role."

DIGITAL SPY
BY NAOMI GORDON
24 FEBRUARY 2017

He may play a narcissistic, testosterone-fuelled baddie in Beauty and the Beast, but in real life, Luke Evans was bowled over by Emma Watson's "brilliant" portrayal of Belle as a "strong, 21st century woman".

The actor takes on brutish love rival Gaston in Disney's live-action adaptation, and speaking to Digital Spy on the set of Noel Clarke's upcoming thriller 10 x 10, he said: "I'm very proud of her achievement in the film - not just her singing ability, but how she's portrayed Belle, and how she's brought her into a 21st century, strong woman."

The Girl on the Train star has a background in musical theatre and explained that, while singing as Gaston wasn't easy, it was a "total joy" to accomplish.

"I wouldn't say it was easy singing as Gaston, but it was very enjoyable," he continued. "I love singing, and Gaston's songs are so great, and they're huge numbers, and so funny. It was just a total joy."

Meanwhile, Luke will star opposite True Detective's Kelly Reilly in Suzi Ewing's first feature-length film 10 x 10 - written by Brotherhood's Noel Clarke

Martin Freeman interview: The actor on hobbits, Cumbermania and his Nazi-hounding role in The Eichmann Show

THE INDEPENDENT
CRAIG MCLEAN
Sunday 18 January 2015

These are strange, head-spinning days for doughty Martin Freeman.

We've met in a private room off the deserted restaurant of a boutique Bristol hotel to discuss the Holocaust. In The Eichmann Show, the 43-year-old Brit plays Milton Fruchtman, the American TV producer who persuaded the Israeli authorities to let cameras film the 1961 trial in Jerusalem of Adolf Eichmann, the high-ranking Nazi who was instrumental in implementing the so-called Final Solution that killed six million European Jews. Night after night the trial was a global media event, and beamed the horrors of the Holocaust into living rooms in 37 countries. True to context, and rightly, this new BBC drama does not stint on the use of newsreel footage from the concentration camps.

So Freeman and I sip tea from decorous china in a decorous hotel and find ourselves discussing the pulse-stopping pragmatism of the Nazis' industrial-scale death bureaucracy. I've seen the finished 90-minute drama; he hasn't. I relay to him the most chilling fact that I learnt from The Eichmann Show's broadcast of original court testimonies from survivors: that the Nazis spread the ashes of murdered Jews on the ground of the camps, so people wouldn't slip.

"Yeah, that rings a bell," he winces. "I went to see a camp when I was very young, called Sachsenhausen, which is not far outside Berlin, and I think there was a similar thing there that just completely rocked me. It was something to do with a running track… Just the banal inhumanity. All that stuff," he says briskly, rapping his knuckles on the table, "that's the really frightening stuff. When it's so easy to do, and so efficient."

A history and politics buff, as well as an assiduous watcher of quality drama, especially that featuring his peers and near-peers, Freeman cites a 2001 HBO/BBC film about the Wannsee Conference, the 1942 board meeting at which the Nazis planned the extermination of the Jews. "It's what Conspiracy does extremely well," he says of the drama that starred Kenneth Branagh as Reinhard Heydrich and Stanley Tucci as Eichmann, "because they're all quite attractive people; well, they're not all att-," he says without breath, backtracking hastily, cutting himself short. It's something Freeman does often, as his quick mind races against his quick tongue.

"But Branagh's character is an attractive, intelligent, smart person," he continues of the actor's Emmy-winning portrayal of senior SS officer Heydrich. "And if it wasn't for the context of what he was saying, you'd go, 'Yeah, I want to get behind this guy, he's pretty cool, he wants to get shit done,'" Freeman recounts briskly, clapping his hands. "And it's no one looking evil and it's no one looking dastardly. It's just, ah, admin. It's really, really frightening."

Certainly, while watching The Eichmann Show, Hannah Arendt's phrase about the "banality of evil" – coined by the writer while documenting the trial for The New Yorker to describe Eichmann's bland, implacable demeanour in the dock – feels as chillingly appropriate as ever.

Freeman is friendly, for sure, but also sharp, opinionated, and not afraid to bristle at lazy reductionism of his acting talents. It makes for an actor who's an engaging conversationalist and who is shot through with a shaft of steel – which also belies an oddly (and for him, aggravating) cuddly image. No, he's not an "everyman" actor; yes, he can do considerably more than Tim from The Office. A fact to which his current roster of roles forcefully attests.

Right now, he is armpit-deep in Dr Watson. Today is the end of day number three on the filming of the next instalment of Sherlock, the hit BBC drama attended – engulfed – by an unprecedented fan mania. Which, it transpires, actually bedevils the making of the show. (The leaking, already, of images of the suit worn by Dr Watson in this Christmas 2015 special – three-piece, brown, tweedy – is the least of the cast's worries.)

Emily Blunt Replaces Emma Watson In Your Voice In My Head 1 Comment published: 2013-03-12 11:09:14 Author: Sean O'Connell (CINEMA BLEND)

So, Emma’s out and Emily’s in. The story follows writer/journalist Emma Forrest as she develops a relationship with a New York therapist (played by Tucci). Harry Potter director David Yates is on board to helm the adaptation, which is part of the reason why we believed Watson would be a great choice. No word on why she passed on the part, though Blunt’s an outstanding reserve for any role, if you can get her. We’ll find out if the casting change affects when we might see Voice in theaters. More on that as it develops.

Awesome Vintage 'Gambit' Poster with Colin Firth & Cameron Diaz by Ethan Anderton November 13, 2012 Source: Sky Movies (FIRST SHOWING)

Now this is something refreshing for a poster, even if it is a throwback to decades ago. Over in the United Kingdom, the Coen Brothers scripted remake of the 1966 caper flick Gambit from director Michael Hoffman (The Last Station) arrives in just over a week, right before Thanksgiving. Audiences in the United States will be waiting until early next year to see the heist comedy starring Colin Firth, Cameron Diaz and Alan Rickman, but in the meantime, you can check out this awesome throwback poster that takes cues from the decade of the film being remade. It looks like an old school James Bond poster.

Interested in meeting COLIN FIRTH OR ALAN RICKMAN? (MUGGLENET)

Okay, so let's face it, you probably aren't interested in meeting Alan Rickman for a chance to talk with him about his new role in Gambit, a revenge movie revolving around con artists, but in fact to speak with him about his iconic role as the professor we all loved to hate (or, hated to love) Severus Snape. Regardless of your reasons, the exciting part is that you have a chance to meet him - if you live in or near London.

According to 3GuysOnALondonTourBus, the stars of the film (which also includes Colin Firth, Stanley Tucci, & Cameron Diaz) are going to make an appearance at the Apple Store on Regent Street in London, this coming Wednesday November 7th from 8PM - 9PM. The hour long discussion will be regarding the film and will include not only Alan, but Colin Firth, Cameron Diaz, Tom Courtenay, and director Michael Hoffman.

See Felicity Blunt’s Wedding Gown! 10/02/2012 AT 11:00 AM ET (STYLE WATCH)

Bride Felicity Blunt’s something new was something quite lovely: a custom wedding gown designed by Nanette Lepore.

For her marriage to Stanley Tucci in London on Saturday night (actually the couple’s second round of vows), the literary agent (second from left) wore a simple, sleeveless white dress with lace overlay and a small bow at the waist.

Her flower girls and bridesmaids — including sisters Suzie (left) and Emily and friend Amy Dixon (right) — also wore white Lepore creations, which somewhat mirrored the bridal gown through cut and detail. Lepore (pictured above) is a friend of Tucci’s, and the actor has made appearances at her runway shows before.

Tucci and Blunt celebrated their nuptials over the weekend with a Friday night party at London’s Shoreditch House, a Saturday ceremony at Middle Temple Hall and a reception at L’Anima restaurant.

Celebrity guests in attendance included groomsmen Steve Buscemi and Oliver Platt, plus Emily Blunt’s husband John Krasinski, Meryl Streep, Patricia Clarkson, Julianne Moore, Colin Firth and designer Kenneth Cole.

Colin Firth, Alan Rickman, Cameron Diaz And A Lion Feature In First Posters For 'Gambit' (THE PLAYLIST)

BY OLIVER LYTTELTON
SEPTEMBER 6, 2012 8:58 AM

Private art curator Harry Deane (Colin Firth) devises a finely-crafted scheme to con England's richest man and avid art collector, Lionel Shabandar, (Alan Rickman) into purchasing a fake Monet painting. In order to bait his buyer, he recruits a Texas rodeo queen (Cameron Diaz) to cross the pond and pose as a woman whose grandfather liberated the painting at the end of WWII.

BAFTA award winner Sir Tom Courtenay, Golden Globe winner Stanley Tucci and Academy Award© winner and veteran comedienne Cloris Leachman round out the cast.

For the second year in a row, it seems that we won't be getting a new Coen Brothers film. The directors had been especially prolific in recent years, with four films in four years between "No Country For Old Men" and "True Grit," but producer Scott Rudin confirmed a while back that it was unlikely that their latest, "Inside Llewlyn Davis," would be ready in time for release in 2012, despite the hopes of many. We suspect we won't see the film until Cannes next year at the earliest, but fans should take heart: a project that the brothers had a hand in will be surfacing over the next few months.

Years ago, as a paycheck assignment gig, the duo wrote a remake of the 1966 Michael Caine/Shirley MacLaine caper flick "Gambit," and after years in development hell, the film finally made it into production in 2011, with Michael Hoffman ("The Last Station") at the helm, and Colin Firth, Cameron Diaz and Alan Rickman in central roles. And Orange have just unveiled a pair of character posters for the film, focusing on Firth and Rickman's characters, as well as a lion who will presumably figure into the plot.

Colin Firth, Alan Rickman: See a Few Seconds of Footage From the Coen Brothers-Scripted ‘Gambit’ Posted on Thursday, September 6th, 2012 by Russ Fischer

Posted on Thursday, September 6th, 2012 by Russ Fischer  (FILM)

A movie I’m really curious to see, whenever the chance arises, is Gambit. Directed by Michael Hoffman, the movie is a remake of a 1966 romantic caper movie that originally starred Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine. This version was scripted some time ago by Joel and Ethan Coen, and finally shot with Colin Firth and Cameron Diaz in the lead roles, supported by Alan Rickman, Stanley Tucci, Tom Courtenay and Cloris Leachman.

Emily Blunt: Felicity Blunt and Stanley Tucci are the picture of newlywed bliss at Boardwalk Empire premiere By SARAH BULL (DAILY MAIL)

They married less than a month ago, and it seems Felicity Blunt and Stanley Tucci are still very much in the honeymoon stage of their relationship.

The pair looked the picture of newlywed bliss as they cuddled up at the Boardwalk Empire season three premiere event in New York on Wednesday night.

Felicity, 31, looked elegant in her purple dress, which she teamed with a metallic clutch bag and kitten heel sandals, while 51-year-old Tucci looked dapper in his grey suit and black tie.

The couple were first introduced by Felicity's sister, and Tucci's Devil Wears Prada co-star, Emily Blunt.

'Emily loved Stanley on the set of Devil, and just thought they would hit it off, so she set them up.'

Tucci then confirmed at a New York screening of new Meryl Streep film Hope Springs last month that the pair had wed in secret, but were planning a more formal ceremony at a later stage.

Felicity and Tucci's marriage comes more than two years after the actor's first wife Kate lost her battle to cancer in April 2009.

Brendan Gleeson: 'The Company You Keep' Trailer: Robert Redford, (VIDEO) The Huffington Post | By Christopher Rosen

"The Company You Keep" doesn't have an official U.S. release date just yet, but with an amazing cast and crew and a pair of high-profile festival bows in Venice and Toronto, expect one to get announced shortly. That's something you should be excited about, because the first trailer for "The Company You Keep" looks like a cross between "Enemy of the State" and "The Fugitive."

Directed by Robert Redford, and starring (deep breath) Shia LaBeouf, Susan Sarandon, Stanley Tucci, Brit Marling, Anna Kendrick, Terrence Howard, Brendan Gleeson, Julie Christie, Richard Jenkins, Nick Nolte, Chris Cooper, Sam Elliot and Redford himself, "The Company You Keep" tells the story of a young journalist (LaBeouf) who discovers the identity of a former Weather Underground activist (Redford) wanted for the murder of a security guard 30 years earlier. More good news: Lem Dobbs ("The Limey," "Haywire") wrote the script, which is an adaptation of Neil Gordon's novel.

Emily Blunt: Stanley Tucci has secretly married her baby sister,Felicity. Congratulations! (DAILY NEWS)

STANLEY TUCCI is a married man. The “Hunger Games” actor, who got engaged to actress Emily Blunt’s younger sister, Felicity, in October, confirmed to us Monday that the two have secretly tied the knot. When we asked Tucci and his blushing bride, who was sporting double bands on her ring finger, at the “Hope Springs” screening at the School of Visual Arts if they were newlyweds, the 51-year-old was hesitant.

“Yaaa-yess,” he said, finally confirming. When we repeated the question, Tucci, who had the London-based literary agent on his arm, gave a more affirmative response: “Yes.” The actor, who was there to support his “Devil Wears Prada” co-star Meryl Streep, told us he didn’t need any pointers from the flick, which is about re-charging your love life. “I have all the tricks!” he joked. A source close to Tucci, who has been wearing a band on his ring finger for months, says the couple plans to have a second, more formal wedding with friends and family.

Colin Firth: CBS Films Release Date Shuffle: GAMBIT, Starring Colin Firth and Cameron Diaz, Moved Up to October 12; by Adam Chitwood Posted:May 9th, 2012 at 2:01 pm (COLLIDER)

CBS Films has done a bit of release date shuffling for two of their upcoming releases.  First up, director Michael Hoffman’s remake of the 1966 caper comedy Gambit has been moved up from January 11th, 2013 to October 12th of this year (per Box Office Mojo).  Cameron Diaz and Colin Firth star as partners in a con to sell a fake Monet painting, and the film has a script by Joel and Ethan Coen.  Given the caliber of talent involved, the January date was always a bit of a puzzler.  The film will now square off against Ben Affleck’s stellar looking period thriller Argo and the Kevin James “comedy” Here Comes the Boom.

CBS Films has certainly seen a cut of Gambit by now, and one has to wonder if they think they’ve got a shot at the awards season race.  The cast is certainly exciting, with Alan Rickman, Stanley Tucci, Tom Courtenay and Cloris Leachman rounding out the supporting roles, so the fact that we’ll get to catch the film earlier than previously planned is definitely good news.

Plummer? Pitt? Oscar's supporting actor race wide open

November 20, 2011 | 7:00am
Here’s how Gold Standard sees the supporting acting race currently shaking out:

1. Christopher Plummer, “Beginners”
2. Kenneth Branagh, “My Week With Marilyn”
3. Albert Brooks, “Drive”
4. Armie Hammer, “J. Edgar”
5. Jonah Hill, “Moneyball”
6. Max von Sydow, “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close”
7. Nick Nolte, “Warrior”
8. John Hawkes, “Martha Marcy May Marlene”
9. Andy Serkis, “Rise of the Planet of the Apes”
10. Ben Kingsley, “Hugo”

Bubbling under: Jeremy Irons, Stanley Tucci and Kevin Spacey, “Margin Call”; Brad Pitt, “The Tree of Life”; Patton Oswalt, “Young Adult”; Philip Seymour Hoffman and George Clooney, “The Ides of March”; Corey Stoll, “Midnight in Paris”; Viggo Mortensen, “A Dangerous Method”; Ezra Miller, “We Need to Talk About Kevin”; John C. Reilly and Christoph Waltz, “Carnage”; Jim Broadbent, “The Iron Lady”

For your consideration: Corey Stoll, “Midnight In Paris.” Bad Hemingway = Great Hemingway for Stoll, who hilariously plays the author as a parody of one of his manly-man characters.
Analysis: Hasn’t Plummer already delivered his acceptance speech? We seem to remember it was deliciously droll and, god, dropping in the chorus from “Edelweiss” made The Standard Bearer’s mom tear up. No? Didn’t happen? Well … not yet.

Serkis can’t be making the rounds to stump for his bravura work in “Apes” since he’s off in New Zealand reprising his work as Gollum in Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit.” But he did take part in a Skype-aided Q&A for the Screen Actors Guild last weekend following an enthusiastic “Apes” screening at the Zanuck Theatre on the 20th Century Fox lot.

Given the volume of ovations and the number of times audience members used the word “genius” when prefacing their questions to Serkis, the 47-year-old actor would seem to be in the thick of the race. The big hurdle now comes in reminding voters just how much they enjoyed watching Serkis’ chimpanzee Caesar go all Spartacus on the humans in “Apes,” since voters typically ignore acting from the sci-fi movies.
