What Happened To Christian Bale's Ass On The Set Of The Machinist Is Horrifying

What Happened To Christian Bale's Ass On The Set Of The Machinist Is Horrifying image

Christian Bale’s dedication to his craft is legendary. Not only did he bulk up to play Bruce Wayne in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, but he also fattened up for his role in American Hustle and famously lost a borderline unhealthy amount of weight in order to play Trevor Reznik in 2004’s The Machinist. However it turns out that we only knew the half of the turmoil that Bale went through in order to play the aforementioned character, and his co-star, Michael Ironside, has now revealed that his ass took most of the punishment.

Ironside made the revelation during a Reddit question-and-answer session, and his story made for pretty grim reading. After being asked what it was like to work with Bale, Ironside decided to recall a story from the production of The Machinist that involved him taking a long, hard look at the Welsh actor’s rear-end. I’ll let Ironside take up the reins at this point …

"I remember on The Machinist,I came to work one day, and we were shooting in Barcelona, Spain, and our trailers were these little Spanish 2-wheeled cabanas that were parked in front of this actual working machine shop. And I heard "pssst...Michael!" from behind one of the cabanas.

And I went over, and it was Chris. And he said, "Can you look at this?" And he turned and dropped his overalls, which he was naked under. And he had lost an INCREDIBLE amount of weight for the character. And he said "Michael, there's something wrong with my ass, can you have a look?" And the muscles in his ass had literally dropped out of the sockets of his hips. The dignity of the muscles, his ass had literally dropped out of the hips and thigh bones. And I said, "Hey Chris, your ass has dropped." And he said, "What do you mean?" And I said, "You've stopped losing body fat, and now you're actually losing elasticity of muscles" - I forget the exact medical term for it, but I said, "You've gone beyond body fat, and now you're into actual muscle tissue and things are being affected."

And he turned - I wasn't sure how he was going to react - and he turned, and said, "Cool"

Tom Hiddleston rumoured to be next villain in Batman v. Superman

FANSHARE
PUBLISHED: JUNE 9, 2014 03:05

- English theatre and movie actor
- Known for playing Loki in the Marvel Studios film "Thor"
- Won 2013 MTV movie award for Best Villain for role in "The Avengers"

Rumours are flowing through the internet about actor Tom Hiddleston as many believe that he might soon be chosen as the next villain in the movie "Batman v. Superman". The actor has earned much critical acclaim and love from fans for his amazing performance as Loki in the Avengers movies in which he has arguably stolen most of the scenes he has been involved in and left some of the most memorable impressions on movie viewers.

While the rumours have not been substantiated entertainment insiders have noted that eventually in the Dark Knight series there will be a need for the Joker to make his presence felt in the movie and while Heath Ledger was incredible as the Joker in the movie there is no one that doubts the ability of the 2013 winner of the MTV movie award for the Best Villain to be spectacular in this role.

One of the things that makes the rumour about Tom Hiddleston potentially playing the role of Joker so juicy and appealing is that despite the movie role having been played by Heath Ledger and Jack Nicholson there is complete confidence within entertainment insiders that he will be able to provide a different outlook of the character.

Movie Review: Tom Hardy on road to stardom in ‘Locke

MAINE SUNDAY TELEGRAM
SUNDAY, MAY 25, 2014
By Christopher Kompanek
Special to the Washington Post

film animated GIF

NEW YORK — “It will be over quickly,” Steven Knight told Tom Hardy. The writer-director remembers saying that to his prospective star as a way of convincing him to take part in his experimental project, “Locke,” a film that takes place in real time as the title character makes a fateful 85-minute drive. “You’ll only feel a tiny prick,” Hardy chimes in playfully.

Knight and Hardy met for the first time in November 2012 to discuss another film, but by February of the following year, they were filming “Locke.” “Tom loves theater and challenges and mad ideas, so I went and wrote it with Tom in mind,” Knight says.

The “mad idea” was making a film consisting solely of a man fielding phone calls while driving. Save for some exterior shots, the camera would remain focused on Hardy’s face. “There’s something about phone calls where people are saying one thing but their faces are saying something else, which is such a gift,” Knight enthuses. “It makes you look clever. Just trying to imitate the surreal way that people talk and the way that they jumble everything up and then just one line of poetry and then jumble everything up again and say the opposite of what they mean.”

Hardy first caught Knight’s (and most of the country’s) attention as Eames, the quick-witted forger with a biting sense of humor in the 2010 sci-fi thriller “Inception,” which starred Leonardo DiCaprio. “I was terrified because it was Leo. You can’t battle against somebody like that for screen time,” Hardy recalls. “I thought, I’m just going to give him whatever he needs, and it took a lot of a load off.” He learned that the more an actor gives of himself to other actors and the audience, the better he looks. He extrapolates that thought to life itself. “The more generous a person is in any environment, the more there is to be received.”

Hardy puffs an e-cigarette as he speaks, while sporting a T-shirt that exposes his several tattoos. He also regularly flashes a boyish grin, and he draws on this duality of hard and soft to craft characters that are difficult to ignore. “There’s no particular formula or process for me. I do like to mix some ‘Taxi Driver’ with Disney World,” the 36-year-old English actor says of his process. He has particular disdain for the word “thespian,” and the idea of method acting bores him, though he is known to deeply inhabit some of his roles.

Tom Hardy: Exclusive, James Gandolfini's final screen bow in 'The Drop'

It was shortly after their first meeting on the Brooklyn set of The Drop that Tom Hardy and James Gandolfini had to shoot a pivotal, intense scene together.

But director Michaël Roskam had plenty of confidence in the duo for the drama about the underground crime world (due out Sept. 19).

"In that meeting, I could see there was a bit of a smile between them. It was like, 'We're going to nail this, right?' " says Roskam. "And they did this intense scene and were just spot on. There was a beautiful connection between those two guys."

Gandolfini's performance was his last for the big screen, as the actor died of a heart attack at age 51 during an Italian vacation last June, just months after filming The Drop.

Roskam, who was nominated for a best-foreign-language Oscar for his 2011 Belgian drama Bullhead, believes the iconic star of The Sopranos was continuing to break into new territory in the suspenseful drama, showing a different kind of vulnerability.

Lehane lobbied hard to make sure Gandolfini signed onto the project.

"There are certain guys out there that are exceptionally rare who can completely feel this type of guy in their bones," says Lehane. Gandolfini could "speak with a sort of music of the urban experience and do it effortlessly."

Roskam says Hardy and Gandolfini were clearly so proud of their work that they would hang out together on set as if savoring the moment.

Christian Bale's mum reveals heartbreak of feud which means they haven't spoken for SIX YEARS

Estranged: Christian Bale with his mother Jenny and his wife Sibi

The heartbroken mum of Hollywood superstar Christian Bale today begs him to end their bitter six-year feud as he stands on the brink of Oscar glory.

Jenny, 66, has not spoken to her famous son since she and his sister Sharon fell out with him at a hotel on the eve of his Dark Knight premiere in 2008.

Police were called and the star – nominated last week for Best Actor in American Hustle – was arrested on suspicion of assault. It was claimed they rowed over money – something Jenny has always strongly denied.

Now, after years of sending her son emails in the hope he would get in touch, Jenny is desperate for a reunion before his landmark 40th birthday on Thursday.

Child star: Christian aged 14 with his mum and sisters at the Empire Of The Sun premiere

Until then, watching Christian’s hit films – from his big break at 11 years old in Empire Of The Sun and American Psycho through to the Batman epics – is the only way she can ease her heartache.

“I have them all,” she says with pride. “Every one he’s made. Then sometimes Christian will come up on TV in one of his films. I’ll be flicking through the channels and suddenly there he is, looking at me from the TV. I think, ‘Oh God’ and carry on watching.”

She went to see American Hustle – in which her son plays plays a fat, balding conman with two beauties fighting over him – at her local cinema in Bournemouth last week.

“I always go to see his films. I usually go on my own, but watched American Hustle with my neighbour,”  says Jenny.

Tom Hardy Drives a Car For 85 Minutes, And It's Mesmerizing

VANITY FAIR
BY JULIE MILLER
JANUARY 17, 2014 2:49 PM

\

There are worse places to spend 85 minutes than inside a car with Tom Hardy, even he ignores you the entire time to make calls on speakerphone. This lesson comes courtesy of Steven Knight’s experimental Sundance entry Locke, during which Hardy does just that in real time without ever exiting his vehicle or speaking to another person face-to-face.

And despite those somewhat extreme constraints, the drama is compelling, genuinely moving, and suspenseful. It's a singular achievement for Knight, who also wrote the drama’s measured script, and Hardy, who manages to propel the story forward even though his butt is planted in the same position for an hour and a half.

The film opens on Hardy, a construction manager named Ivan Locke, as he steps into his BMW S.U.V. and leaves a work site. During each phone call Locke makes, the audience slowly discovers more about Hardy and his late-night excursion via trickles of exposition. Knight carefully unfurls more stakes about why Hardy’s car ride is so urgent, why his family is so disappointed in him, and why the timing of his trip is so damning for his construction company.

As the pressure on Hardy’s character mounts, the actor never resorts to showing his stress by going Nic Cage on us—raising his voice, banging on a steering wheel, or flipping off speeding passersby. Instead, he speaks in a Welsh accent so lilting and soothing that we would personally request it for our iOS if we lived in a future Her-type universe that allowed us to make these kinds of decisions. Even though he maintains composure (for the most part), and his position at the wheel for the entirety of the movie, Hardy, with Knight's direction, is able to summon legitimate suspense thanks to the script’s snaking personal revelations, which are masterfully laid out.

Tom Hardy: I was lucky I didn't get AIDS from drug use

YAHOO
By Ben Arnold
Thu, Jan 2, 2014 13:00 GMT

Tom Hardy has said that he was 'out of control' on drink and drugs before he turned his life around, and was lucky that he did not contract AIDS while he was at his lowest.

The actor was addicted to alcohol and crack cocaine until his mid-20s, after which he checked himself into rehab.

Speaking in a charity interview with the Prince's Trust and the Daily Mirror, Hardy said: “I didn’t want anyone to know I was out of control, but I couldn’t hide it.

“Eventually, the body gives up. I was completely kaput. I was lucky I didn’t get hepatitis or AIDS.”

Hardy, who's now one of the UK's leading actors, was at one time facing a lengthy prison sentence after being caught aged 15 in a stolen Mercedes and in possession of a gun.

Henry Cavill Gears Up To Reprise Role In ‘Batman Vs. Superman’

INQUISITOR
January 2, 2014

Henry Cavill is gearing up to reprise his role as Superman in the upcoming sequel to Man Of Steel, which is being called Batman Vs. Superman, at least for now.

Part of the filming will take place in Detroit, Michigan, and the city is anticipating a lot of celebrities and money to come in as the production gets underway in the coming weeks.

This is the ultimate geek fantasy come true as the caped crusader, Batman (Ben Affleck) faces off against the most popular do-good superhero, Superman (Henry Cavill).

The much talked about and anticipated film is still a mystery as far as what the script looks like, and at this point, there are more rumors than facts, but that doesn’t stop us from talking about it anyway.

What we know so far is that Zack Snyder is returning to helm this so-called sequel to Man Of Steel, which actually looks like anything but a sequel.

We also know that the studio has chosen Ben Affleck as our new Batman, after Christian Bale, who played the Dark Knight in the Christopher Nolan trilogy announced he will not play the role again.

Henry Cavill: Is Man Of Steel an Oscar contender?

Could Henry Cavill pick up the Best Actor award at the 2013 Oscars? No.

YAHOO
By Gregory Wakeman | Yahoo Contributor Network – Wed, Dec 18, 2013 17:24 GMT

Gravity,' 'Inside Llewyn Davis' and '12 Years A Slave,' have wowed critics and audiences alike over the last 12 months to almost universal levels of acclaim. But this hasn't stopped 'Man Of Steel', despite its comparatively mixed reception, from launching its own For Your Consideration page ahead of the upcoming awards season.

Warner Bros. are now hoping that it will compete in a number of categories at the Critics Choice, Golden Globes, Writer & Directors Guild of America and Academy Awards ceremonies over the next few months.

These include the Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Film Editing, Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects, Best Costume Design, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling sections.

They also fancy a dabble in the acting sections too, with Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishbourne and Russell Crowe all expected to contest in these sections.

But what chance does it have of actually competing for any of these accolades?

Personally, I can't see 'Man Of Steel' stemming the snobbish tide that has seen superheroes ignored by the Academy Awards and its various competitors over the last 13 years.

Since 'X-Men' legitimised the genre in 2000, 38 films have received just 22 nominations at the Oscars, going on to win a paltry 3 awards. And most of them were for the less respected gongs too.

The only successes came courtesy of 'The Dark Knight's' Sound Editing, Visual Effects and Heath Ledger's iconic portrayal as The Joker, which, even though it was obviously brilliant, rode a sympathetic wave to glory a year after his untimely passing. This is despite the fact that superheroes have dominated the cinematic landscape over the last decade and a half.

Tom Hardy To Make a Billion Panties Drop as James Bond

HECKLER SPRAY
By Jess Goodwin - September 18, 2013

tom hardy could be next bond

Though Daniel Craig is still alive and well and will continue his double life as 007 in the next two James Bond movies, rumors have been going around this week that Tom Hardy will take over once Craig steps down from the martini throne.

“Tom is right at the top of the wish list. He’s been approached to gauge his interest and he’s keen,” an anonymous source reported. If it’s true, great! I love Tom Hardy. He’s a talented actor with very nice lips. I’m sure he’d do a bang-up job, and I can totally see him doing the whole “Bond… James Bond” thing in his Bane voice. (Do they actually still say that? I’ve only ever seen Skyfall…)The source added:

”He is a respected actor with a great catalogue of films but most importantly he’s the type of guy that all men want to be like and all women want to be with. He’s perfect Bond material.”

Tom Hardy with a mother and calf in Botswana; the actor tracked the poaching trade across southern Africa for a two-part ITV show (ITV)

THE SUNDAY TIMES

Tom Hardy makes a good living out of playing villains and hardmen in Hollywood movies. But, he says, “the thought of being eaten by a lion for dinner in the middle of the night while taking a piss has a certain anxiety”.

Hardy recently toured four southern African countries and filmed a two-part documentary, to be shown this week, about the poaching crisis stalking the continent. The trip had its dangers.

“The week before I went out,” he says, “what was left of one lad [after a lion attack] was put in a cooler box and sent home to his mum.” In South African townships, if you are accompanied by a camera crew with expensive equipment, “the atmosphere changes when the sun goes down. The odd machete-wielding glue-sniffer tends to raise the blood level.”

Christian Bale Steals Art, Robert De Niro's Accent, and Dances with Jennifer Lawrence in First American Hustle Trailer

VANITY FAIR
by Julie Miller

Contrary to what the first image from American Hustle told us yesterday, the star of the upcoming David O. Russell drama is not Bradley Cooper's immaculate tight curls. (Although they do get an intimate scene with the hundreds of tiny pink sponge rollers we previously mentioned.) Judging by the trailer, available below, the true star of the film is Christian Bale, a Bronx con man who sounds like Robert De Niro, specializes in stolen art, and is two-timing his loose-cannon wife (Jennifer Lawrence) with the most subtly coiffed woman in the entire movie (Amy Adams)—until, it appears, she gets her hands on Cooper's rollers.

Christian Bale emerges 'Out of the Furnace' (USA TODAY) Bryan Alexander, USA TODAY

2OutOfFurnace

Christian Bale plays a steelworker forced to go up against criminals to find his brother in this sneak peek at "Out of the Furnace."

In Out of the Furnace, Christian Bale has none of Batman's superhero qualities lingering from the Dark Knight trilogy.

That's just how director Scott Cooper wanted it for his film about a steelworker standing up against tough criminals, Cooper's first foray since writing and directing 2009's Crazy Heart. Out of the Furnace is set to open Nov. 27.

"You often find superheroic people wearing capes and costumes in film today," says Cooper. "But working-class Americans are the real heroes. This is the story of this man who works in a blast furnace, but with themes of justice, retribution and courage."

"Russell is not of that personality, nor does he wish to be," says Bale. "But he finds himself having to confront these people in order to do the right thing. He's only got his own fortitude and will power, nothing else."

To capture the blue-collar spirit, Cooper insisted on filming in Braddock, Pa., where he set the story. The director was impressed with the way Bale immersed himself, taking none of his own clothing on the shoot — wearing only what Russell would wear. Bale also experienced work on the steel furnace.

"It's long hours, unhealthy conditions and intense heat.," says Bale. "It's dangerous work. The guys had recently lost a friend who had died on the job. But there's a great bond. And they have a love for it, despite the hardships."

Christian Bale 'will not be in Justice League movie' Published Sunday, Jun 16 2013, 11:52am EDT | By Zeba Blay (DIGITAL SPY)

The Dark Knight Rises

Christian Bale will most likely not appear in a potential Justice League movie, according to writer David S Goyer.

Goyer, co-writer of The Dark Knight and writer of this year's Man of Steel, revealed his thoughts on a possible cinematic DC universe to Hey Guys and Den of Geek.

He said that Batman does exist in the Man of Steel universe, but "it would be a different Bruce Wayne from the Dark Knight trilogy".

Goyer added that while the popularity of Marvel's Avengers has made execs at Warner Bros. seriously consider a Justice League film, such a project would depend on the success of Man of Steel.

"Warner Bros. has hopes that there will be more Man of Steel films, and that this will be the beginning of a shared universe," he explained.

"We could meet Batman, or Wonder Woman, or the Justice League in these movies. But they all hinge on box office reception."
