Sherlock: What's next for Martin Freeman?

Martin Freeman’s casting in Fargo is a great next step in a post-Hobbit career. (Picture: PBS-Hartswood Films for the BBC)

It was a question we’d been wondering about for a little while, and even in the middle of last week were openly discussing amongst ourselves following a trawl of the Internet Movie Database – just what will Martin Freeman do next?

Ironically, a couple of days later we had our answer. He is the co-lead alongside Billy Bob Thornton in a ten part ‘limited series’ (that is, a series with no expectation of subsequent seasons) for US cable network FX, based on the 1996 Coen Brothers classic Fargo.

The Hobbit Trilogy has dominated Freeman’s life for much of the last three years, as it did for the actors of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy a decade ago.

For many of that cast, the next project they took was the crucial next step after such a consistent, and probably exhausting, run of acting work of playing the same character for such an extended length of time.

The Hobbit was of course different from the earlier trilogy, with scheduled breaks in production allowing Martin to fit in John Watson twice(!) for Sherlock series two and three, as well as work on John Hardwick’s Svengali and Edgar Wright’s The World’s End.

This new project ticks the boxes perfectly for Freeman, one of the nicest and most down to earth actors you could ever hope to meet.

We now have a new major question of course – what will he sound like with a Minnesota accent?

"Sherlock" season 3 may be near completion as far as filming, but director Jeremy Lovering reveals that, in typical Steven Moffat fashion, not all is what it seems.

"I think you've got a responsibility to the fan base," says Lovering during an interview with Flicks and the City. "[With 'Sherlock'], the fan base comes with it, and you kind of go, 'Shit, I've got to get this right.'"

"I love them, I absolutely love them," says Lovering regarding working with "Sherlock" co-stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.

"Martin's comic timing a beyond second-to-none. Benedict is funny and brilliant, and there was moments where I felt genuinely, massively inspired."

Currently, "Sherlock" season 3 has Jeremy Lovering credited for filming the season premiere, "The Empty Hearse." "The Sigh of Three" is directed by Colm McCarthy, while "His Last Vow" is currently filming with Nick Hurran as director.

Comedy-adventure. Starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Martin Freeman. Directed by Edgar Wright. (R. 109 minutes.)

One of the weirder aspects of adolescence is that it's possible to have close friends you don't like, that you're just thrown in with. In "The World's End," one of those friends comes back into the lives of his four former high school buddies, two decades later, hoping to re-create the most glorious day of his youth, an all-night drinking binge. And they give in to the force of his personality and agree to join him.

For about an hour, "The World's End" is the story of four settled men, in early middle age, dutifully following their old school friend from pub to pub. Nick Frost, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine and Eddie Marsan are all talented actors, with Frost and Freeman particularly skilled in comedy, and together the five principals create the sense of men who have known each other for many years. The banter is effortless; the comedy flows.

Then the movie takes a turn into a rather unexpected direction, one foretold in the coming attractions trailer, and one that will probably be discussed in most reviews, but I won't do it here, because I enjoyed the surprise. To state it generally, the movie goes from a character study to something that is quite nutty, and yet it loses nothing in the transition. The characters stay vivid, the interaction essential, and the issues introduced remain on the table and continue to be developed. There's just this whole other crazy thing going on at the same time.

World's End's Rosamund Pike a Hot MILF in Esquire UK (photos) English Actress's New Comedy Set for Release July 19 By The ImproperStaff, July

RosamundPike Esquire front Worlds Ends Rosamund Pike a Hot MILF in Esquire UK (photos)

This month, Pike will supply some of the eye candy for “The World’s End,” a doomsday comedy by Edgar Wright and British comedian and actor Simon Pegg.

Pike will play one of five old friends, including Pegg and Martin Freeman, who reunite after 20 years and decide to finish a pub crawl they started last time they got together. Only problem, aliens are invading the earth.

Although Pike may be known as a blonde bombshell, she had a classical English upbringing.

She’s only child of concert musicians and opera singers Caroline Friend and Julian Pike. Her father currently works as a professor of music and head of Operatic Studies at the Birmingham Conservatoire. She started acting as a teen but still managed to graduate from Oxford with a degree in English.

She has the range to play proper roles like the eldest Bennet sister in 2005′s Jane Austen classic, “Pride and Prejudice,” with Keira Knightley, Carey Mulligan and Jena Malone. Or in off-beat comedies like “The World’s End.”

“To be made to laugh is one of the greatest things on Earth and to be in the company of people who do that the best – like Simon and Nick – is the best,” Pike told Esquire. “It’s good for the soul.”

Her latest film debuts July 19.

Pike is so hot she had a two-year relationship with gay actor Simon Woods. She gave birth to her first child, a son, Solo in May 2012, with Robie Uniacke, whom she’s been dating since 2010.

Simon Pegg: Rosamund Pike's fillets stuck to me added: 5 Jul 2013 // by: Film-News.co.uk Newsdesk

Rosamund Pike

Simon Pegg bonded with Rosamund Pike after one of her "chicken fillets" kept "sticking to him" during a love scene.

The actors star together in Hector and the Search for Happiness and had to record while almost naked.

The problems they experienced left Simon happy to open up to her about anything.

Simon with Rosamund Pike

"We had to do quite a graphic love scene,” he told the latest edition of British Glamour magazine. “You wear these modesty things that cover your bits and for women you'll wear ones on the ends of your boobs so you don't look naked.

They were like chicken fillets and one kept sticking to me.”

The motion picture, which also stars Toni Collette, tells the tale of a psychiatrist who searches the globe to find the secret of contentment.

It is released in cinemas next year.

“Once you've done that with someone, you can really talk about anything," Simon giggled.

Martin Freeman, Simon Pegg, Rosamund Pike: THE WORLD’S END Trailer is Here and It’s Awesome Posted by Karin Abcarians - 05/08/2013 - (SCREEN INVASION)

The first trailer for Edgar Wright’s The World’s End has arrived! It’s hilarious, weird and completely awesome! It stars Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine, Eddie Marsan, Rosamund Pike and is of course directed by Edgar Wright with writing by him and Simon Pegg.

Here’s the synopsis of the film: Director Edgar Wright and actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost reunite for a third film following the successes “Shaun of the Dead” (2004) and “Hot Fuzz” (2007).

In “The World’s End,” 20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hellbent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by Gary King (Simon Pegg), a 40-year-old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their hometown and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub – The World’s End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realize the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s. Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries.

 Here’s the trailer:

ROSAMUND PIKE: FILMS IN 2013 INCLUDE THE WORLD'S END AND A LONG WAY DOWN (FAN SHARE) BY: ELIZABETH DARRELL

Rosamund Pike has had a busy couple of years, but she's yet to hit the jackpot with a big budget movie that manages to introduce her to audiences around the world. Although she was seen in 'Wrath of the Titans' and 'Jack Reacher' in the last two years, both geared to be international blockbusters, the films ended up underperforming and barely staying on anyone's radar.

However, Pike's seemed to veer away from those types of films of late, and her next few films show a lot of promise. Pike will first be seen in 'The World's End' in august, starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and Martin Freeman. The film deals with five friends who unite for an epic pub crawl, and end up becoming humanity's only hope for survival. Although people have been comparing this with the other apocalypse comedy 'This Is The End', it looks like both films have vastly different tones.

Martin Freeman: 'The World's End': Simon Pegg, Martin Freeman, Nick Frost in new image Published Monday, Mar 25 2013, 1:16pm EDT | By Emma Dibdin (DIGITAL SPY)

A new image from The World's End has been released.

The long-awaited third film in Edgar Wright's Cornetto Trilogy - following 2004's Shaun of the Dead and 2006's Hot Fuzz - centres on five friends who reunite to recreate a pub crawl from their teenage years.

Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Eddie Marsan appear in the image as the five, who unwittingly become humankind's only hope for survival.

Pegg's character Gary is described as a 40-year-old man clinging desperately to his teenage years, while Frost's Andy is a successful lawyer.

Freeman, Considine and Marsan play the other three friends - an estate agent, a rocker-turned-architect and a car dealer respectively.

Rosamund Pike: It was startling to meet Jack Reacher co-star Tom Cruise (METRO)

Sitting on a plush grey sofa, her posture so perfect you’d think she’d set it with a protractor, Rosamund Pike is talking about that dreaded life-work balance that we Brits are so bad at. ‘They say that when we talk about balance, we mean no balance at all,’ she says, in those deliciously sculpted tones of hers. ‘When the French talk about “équilibre”, as they call it, they actually mean they achieve it. We British mums apparently never achieve balance. We talk about life-work balance – it generally means something we’re not really succeeding at. We work too hard and life goes down the pan.’

The Hammersmith-born daughter of two opera singers, who rose to fame a decade ago in the James Bond film Die Another Day as the ice-cold Miranda Frost, is out to prove otherwise. We meet just a few months after the 33-year-old Pike gave birth to her first child, a son named Solo. In the midst of shooting Simon Pegg comedy The World’s End, she’s also dealing with the aftermath of a burglary at her mews house in West Kensington. And she’s relocating to a new place with her partner, businessman Robie Uniacke, who it turns out has just sold her TV on eBay without telling her.

Rosamund Pike sheds ice-queen shackles with meatier role in 'Jack Reacher' (SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST)

Rosamund Pike has shed her ice-queen imageto star opposite Tom Cruise in their action-packed new film, writes James Mottram

You might think the daughter of two opera singers, who holds a degree in English from Oxford University, and once counted Chelsea Clinton as a friend might be a little, well, unapproachable. It hardly helps that in the case of Rosamund Pike, she rose to fame as the icy Miranda Frost in 2002's James Bond film Die Another Day, a role she played rather too well. All of a sudden she was the English rose with thorns, aloof and standoffish. Or as she explains it: "Suddenly, my personality was usurped by Miranda Frost's hostility and cool."

In fact, the 33-year-old Pike is a rather warm soul who has a way of making you feel, if only for half an hour, like an old friend. When we meet at London's Soho Hotel, Pike curled up on a cream sofa, wearing a cream blouse, spiky heeled boots and black leggings, we talk about all manner of things - the merits of iPads, the redemption of tennis player Andy Murray, boozy Saturday nights out in the suburbs, her (not entirely serious) plans for a daytime TV chat show with Pierce Brosnan, her improving American accent and the "horrendous burglary" she endured a few weeks back.

This is a particularly hectic time for Pike: she's just started shooting The World's End, a comedy about an epic pub crawl from Shaun of the Dead's Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright. She's in the midst of moving house with her partner, Robie Uniacke, a businessman. They're also contending with parenthood. Pike gave birth in May to a boy they named Solo.

For all this, Pike presents a serene façade. "I'm much more chaotic than people realise," she says in her cut-glass accent. "People think I'm incredibly calm. It makes me laugh. They say things like, 'You've got this wonderful air of calm about you.' I take the compliment, because the reality is so far removed."
