DOWNTON ABBEY UPSTAGING MILDRED PIERCE

The PBS Masterpiece Theatre miniseries "Downton Abbey" is upstaging HBO's "Mildred Pierce."

The melodrama starring Oscar winner Kate Winslet had earned the most nominations heading into the 63rd annual Emmy Awards with 21 nods. But it's been shut out of Sunday night's ceremony. Instead, the honors have gone to the miniseries that looks at the British class system before World War I.

Julian Fellowes, who created "Downton Abbey," won for writing and Brian Percival for direction for a TV miniseries, movie or dramatic special. And Maggie Smith won for supporting actress for the miniseries. "Mildred Pierce" was nominated in all three categories.
