'Superman' scenes shot in Cassidy

Venerable hotel serves as backdrop for 'Man of Steel,' the latest installment in the popular series

If you were commuting during rush hour from anywhere south of the Nanaimo airport this week, you were likely stuck in an unusual traffic jam caused by one-lane traffic passing the Cassidy hotel just north of the airport on the Trans-Canada Highway.
As you crept past you probably noticed more than a dozen semi trucks, four logging trucks, a few pavillion-style tents and some really big, bright lights surrounding the old hotel.
What you were observing was one of the set locations for the movie Superman: Man of Steel. The true identity of the movie was confirmed by a crew member who did not wish to be named.
In addition to the general community interest, filming brought some economic benefits to the area in addition to the rental of the Cassidy and permit fees.
Although no movie star sightings have been reported, it was confirmed that Amy Adams, who plays Lois Lane; Kevin Costner, who plays Jonathan Kent, Superman's father on Earth; and Henry Cavill, who plays Superman/Clark Kent, were filming at the Cassidy Hotel.
The set was full of burly looking men in plaid jackets and toques, fulfilling the requirements for a casting call for people with a logger or fisherman look in August.
The crew member confirmed the site is supposed to mimick a small town in Alaska. Crew members bustled around with racks of costumes, light and sound readers and walkie-talkies. In addition to the semi trucks, there were four cast trailers, a few buses, and two large, green army Jeeps. A staging area full of lighting equipment was set up behind the hotel with lights so bright it seemed as though a small sun was shining on the building.
Filming was expected to wrap up yesterday, opening up the highway in time for long weekend traffic.
The economic benefits of hosting such a film can be significant and this one was no exception.
The Coast Bastion rented 90 rooms to crew members for a night, said Volker Grady, general manager of the hotel.
As far as the hotel staff knows, none of the stars stayed there.
"They were all extremely wellbehaved and we would love to see more of that kind of business," he said.
Grady said there is something exciting about hosting filming for a major motion picture, and he thinks it represents a major opportunity for economic growth.
"I think Nanaimo will receive a good report card from this production company and that's a valueable thing," he said. "We were told it's easier to shoot in places like this than in downtown Vancouver."
Superman: Man of Steel is expected to hit theatres in 2013.
