The former Coronation Street actor – who shot to fame on 1981 movie Chariots of Fire - is thought to be in line to play the role of Lord Hepworth in the ITV1 show's Christmas special, which is expected to attract viewing figures of more than 15 million for its festive episode.
But the Dowager Countess of Grantham – who is portrayed by Dame Maggie Smith - will decide the fate of Hepworth's love life as she considers whether he is 'suitable' enough for either Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael), Lady Sybil (Jessica Brown-Findlay) or Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery), according to the Daily Express.
More than 11 million viewers tuned in to see the Downton Abbey finale last weekend, which saw fans shocked by the death of Lavinia Swire (Zoe Boyle) after she was struck down with Spanish Flu.
The programme has been re-commissioned for a third series, which will see the likes of Hugh Bonneville, Joanne Froggatt and Rob James-Collier all reprise their roles in the show.
The forthcoming season will be set over an 18-month period between 1920 and 1921, covering the dramatic lives of the Crawley family and their servants.
