Ciaran Hinds - The Shore Northern Irish film makes Oscar shortlist: BBC News

The Shore, written, directed and produced by Terry George, was one of 107 films which originally qualified for the category.

A short action film made by a Belfast film-maker is among the 10 pieces short-listed for the 2012 Academy Awards.

The Shore, written, directed and produced by Terry George, was one of 107 films which originally qualified for the category.

Academy Branch members will now select three to five nominees from among the 10 titles.

Starring Ciaran Hinds, The Shore is about a man who emigrated to America 25 years ago to escape the Troubles and is now bringing his daughter back to meet his childhood friends.

The 30-minute film was shot entirely in Northern Ireland on location in Killough.

Ciaran Hinds said it was a "lovely story about reconciliation and people reconnecting".

Speaking about his return to Northern Ireland Terry George said: "I felt for quite a while it was a gap in my career that I hadn't actually filmed in my homeland, and it was the best experience I've ever had.

"Film in Northern Ireland has really ramped up. It has a strong infrastructure now, and the government and the community seem to be in favour of it. They aren't jaded about people shooting on their streets."

The nominations for the 84th Academy Awards will be announced on 24 January.
