Salmon Fishing in the Yemen is set to open the 23rd annual Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Based on Paul Torday's novel of the same name, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen tells the story of a fishery expert (Ewan McGregor), who travels to the Yemen after he is approached by a consultant (Emily Blunt) to make a sheik's vision of bringing fly-fishing to the Yemen a reality.

Directed by Dear John's Lasse Hallström and written by Slumdog Millionaire's Simon Beaufoy, the film also features Kristin Scott Thomas, Rachael Stirling and Amr Waked.

The film festival will take place in California from January 5 to January 16.

Earlier this month, McGregor said that he is interested in exploring sex in his films.

"In regards to the gay community and myself, I'm delighted, but I'm just interested in people and life," he said. "I'm interested in sexuality and sex, relationships and love and what makes us tick, and it doesn't matter whether that's heterosexual or gay romance."
