The final film in the record-breaking franchise, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 arrived in cinemas in July and grossed $52.5 million over 11 weeks in wide release.

In Potter's wake were two more sequels - Transformers: Dark of the Moon with $37.3 million and The Hangover Part II with $32.6 million. In fact, seven out of the 10 highest grossing films of the year were sequels or parts in a franchise.

Bucking the trend were Bridesmaids, the female-led comedy coming in sixth with $27.1 million, Disney's Rapunzel animation Tangled with $22.2 million and the little Aussie film that could, Red Dog with $21.4 million.

Red Dog is the first local film to be among the year's biggest since Baz Luhrmann's Australia was released in 2008. The crowd-pleasing tale is now the eighth biggest Australian film of all time.

Had it been released during this calendar year, last year's big Boxing Day - and Oscar-winning - success story The King's Speech would also have landed high on the chart. It earned around $27 million of its $30.8 million total gross during 2011.

The next-best performers of 2011 to just miss the cut include The Smurfs ($19.8 million), Kung Fu Panda 2 ($19.4 million) and Thor ($18.9 million).

A Potter film also topped our year-end box office in 2007 and 2009.

The official end of year figures will be released in mid-January.
