Story by Jack Foley
MATTHEW Macfadyen has won the lead role in new BBC drama Ripper Street.
Created by Waking The Dead‘s Richard Warlow, the new period drama will focus on the notorious police precinct known as H Division that was charged with keeping order in London’s Whitechapel in the aftermath of the Jack The Ripper murders.
Speaking at the recent Broadcasting Press Guild lunch, BBC One controller Danny Cohen described Ripper Street as “gripping new drama”.
He added: “Set against the backdrop of a fevered historical London, I believe it has the quality and intensity to be a hit with BBC One viewers.”
Macfadyen has previously starred in Spooks for the BBC, while also winning acclaim for his performance in Channel 4 mini-series Any Human Heart.
His recent film credits include last year’s revival of The Three Musketeers in 3D and Frost/Nixon.
Ripper Street will air later this year.
