Sean Bean: American audiences love "Wild in the Streets" (Ashbourne News)

Americans go wild for Shrovetide movie

By Gareth Butterfield
A FEATURE film showcasing Ashbourne Royal Shrovetide has received rave reviews following a special screening at an American film festival.

Wild in the Streets, an 82-minute documentary shot in Ashbourne during the 2006 game, was shown to film buffs at the Slamdance Film Festival in Utah last week.

Directed by actor Sean Bean, the epic’s world premiere was held at the Empire Ballroom in Ashbourne but independent film experts in the United States have hailed it a success.

Reviewer Michael Rechtshaffen, writing in the Hollywood Reporter, wrote: “The spirited film packs a universal appeal that travels well beyond the banks of the Henmore.”

After describing the game to his American readers, he added: “While the film has much to say about the importance placed on tradition and community values in the face of constant social upheaval, there’s one nagging topic that remains unanswered: “Just where amidst that heaving mass of several thousand was Baxter and his crew able to set up their cameras without getting trampled?”

(This documentary is Narrated by Sean Bean, not directed by him.  The film was directed by Peter Baxter)
