Judi Dench speaks out on behalf of Michigan Shakespeare Festival (MICHIGAN LIVE)

Jackson, MI – One of Britain’s most accomplished thespians is lending her support to the Michigan
Shakespeare Festival.

Dame Judi Dench, a multiple Oscar and Tony winner, spoke out in support of the Jackson-based Shakespeare Festival through a statement released by the festival on Friday. “I’m delighted to help spread the word any way I can,” said Dench. “Especially now, when arts institutions are facing so much peril.” New Michigan Shakespeare Festival Managing Director Bart Williams got to know Dench while working in England. He remains close with Dench’s daughter Finty Williams.

In recent conversations, Bart Williams has talked to Dench about the struggles many arts and theater organizations are experiencing during tough economic times. “In Britain, we have to be ever vigilant against arts funding cuts,” Dench added. “It depresses me that the situation in America is even more dire. There is much less funding available, and so many more people to be reached. “If my support can in any way help extend the reach of the Michigan Shakespeare Festival, I offer it gladly.”

Bart Williams said the Shakespeare Festival’s Shakespeare high school tour continues to grow, as it has expanded from southeastern Michigan to include West Michigan and parts of northern Indiana and Ohio. However, the tour remains on a tight budget, he added.
