Confirmed: Maggie Smith Staying with "Downton Abbey" Roger Friedman, Contributor (FORBES)
About ten days ago there were rampant reports that “Downton Abbey” was about to be torn apart. The popular series, shown here on PBS, would be losing star Maggie Smith as Lady Violet. Even the New York Times couldn’t get a definitive answer. So let me relieve you “Abbey” fans of all fears.
Co-star Elizabeth McGovern told me the other night that Dame Maggie is defintely staying. “I don’t know where that came from, but it’s not true.” McGovern — married to “My Week with Marilyn” director Simon Curtis, is American but has been living in the UK for years. She first came to prominence in Robert Redford’s “Ordinary People” in 1980.
