Kenneth Branagh to be honored at SF film festival Pam Grady Sunday, April 22, 2012 (SF GATE)

Kenneth Branagh vividly recalls his first visit to San Francisco. "Henry V," his directorial debut, which he had also adapted and starred in, was opening in America.

The 28-year-old was in town to meet the press, including Chronicle critic Judy Stone. "I remember she and the rest of the people I spoke to on a very packed day in a very packed introduction to promoting a movie," the Belfast native remembers during a recent phone call.

He adds that it was also during the trip that Samuel Goldwyn Jr., who was distributing the film, called with news of the first glowing reviews out of New York, the first sign a film slated for a little limited release as going to grow much bigger.

Twenty-three years after that memorable occasion, Branagh returns to the city as the 2012 recipient of the San Francisco International Film Festival's Founder's Directing Award. It will be presented to him at the Film Society Awards Night gala on Thursday, followed the next evening by an onstage Q&A and screening of his 1991 romantic thriller "Dead Again" at the Castro Theatre.
