Russell Crowe, Eddie Redmayne, Hugh Jackman (Les Miserables): Young man! Russell Crowe looks more like a member of Village People than a 19th century Frenchman as he films Les Misérables By JOHN JAMES (MAIL ON LINE)

As Roman General Maximus Decimus Meridius in Gladiator, he fought in many a gruesome battle and wore some fetching armour. But Russell Crowe looked more like a member of Village People than a tough straight talking Frenchman from the 19th century as he filmed Les Misérables, yesterday. The 48-year-old was spotted wearing the modern shades in between filming scenes for his new movie and also had a pretty dandy cap.

Wearing a black cap and a long coat with a waist coat and trousers, Crowe runs through the streets as guns are fired and swords are swung around him. British actor Eddie Redmayne was also on set and he plays the role of young rebel fighter Marius Pontmercy. The 30-year-old managed to look rather dashing despite doing a lot of grimacing on set as he shot at the enemy from a safe distance. 

Hugh Jackman was not spotted during filming yesterday but he is a central figure to the story. The Wolverine star is playing Jean Valjean, a poor man on the run from the police after he was released from prison after a 19 year stretch for stealing bread for his family. 

The two Australian men may be enemies onscreen but they have been getting on famously off camera. According to reports, Hugh keeps asking to re-shoot fight scenes with the Gladiator star because he likes hitting him. A source told The Sun newspaper: 'The crew find it hilarious as Crowe would obviously sweep the floor with Jackman in real life. 'Hugh keeps ribbing Russell and winding him up but he's been getting his own back by calling Hugh a twirlie, which is showbiz speak for a singer/dancer.' Jackman was also going down well with the crew after he reportedly bought every single worker a lottery ticket.
