Hugh Bonneville: 'We have had to jiggle things around a bit': Hugh Bonneville explains how Downton scenes were changed because of the wet weather By LIZ THOMAS (MAIL ON LINE)

It was the wettest April on record and a string of severe flood alerts and a washout bank holiday has mean we are now in Monsoon May.

Having wreaked havoc in the real world it seems the impact of unseasonably bad weather is now reaching the fictional one.

Hugh Bonneville has confessed the torrential rain has affected shooting on the new series of Downton Abbey.

Affected: Hugh Bonneville who plays Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham in Downton Abbey, has told of how the recent inclement weather has affected shooting for the period drama

Speaking on Radio 2’s Weekend Wogan he said the relentless April showers had taken its toll on the set and some scenes were being adjusted or “rescheduled”.

He explained: ‘It has been a bit tough. We have had to jiggle things around a bit. An outdoor scene had to become an indoor one. But we will get there.

‘I am not breaking any trade secrets to reveal that there was a picnic scene that we just couldn’t shoot. We are rescheduling that.’

Bonneville, 48, plays the Earl of Grantham in the hugely successful ITV1 drama, which fellows the lives of his family and their servants.

Penned by Julian Fellowes, the show has been a hit in the U.S. and had won prestigious Golden Globe awards.

But Bonneville admitted the success had its drawbacks.
