Shirley MacLaine: Aging on Her Own Terms and "Downton Abbey" Our Exclusive One-on-one Interview with Shirley MacLaine BY: CINDY PEARLMANMAY 17, 2012 (STYLE GOES STRONG)

SECRETS OF THE NEW SEASON OF "DOWNTON ABBEY"

In the upcoming season of "Downton Abbey," she joins the cast of Martha Levinson, mother of Cora, Countess of Grantham.

Fans are rabid to know anything about her character and the new season.

"It's a very intelligent show. I keep asking (creator) Julian Fellowes, 'Who is really writing this? It can't be you!'" she says.

MacLaine is coming on the show as Elizabeth McGovern's American mother. It will pit her squarely against all the delicious Maggie Smith English aristocratic snootiness.

"I keep hearing, 'It's you versus Maggie,' but it's not like that," the actress says revealing a few plot secrets of the episodes she recently shot.

"It's not gunfight at the OK Corral. It's kicked up a few more notches," she says.

There are some reports that Maggie Smith might not be back for the new season. "I hear she hasn't signed to come back yet? Is it true? I don't know," MacLaine says. "I've known Maggie for 40 years and she does what she wants."

"It's a brilliant show," MacLaine sums up. "I've been asking myself why is this show so obsessively addictive.

"Even I can't figure it out," she says. "I don't think it's about the upper cast versus the lower cast. I think there is something more sophisticated going on and it's hidden.

"Of course, a lot of it is good writing and a good environment for the show," she says. "The series is full of truth and authentic touches. It's full of class flashes, but still there is something else going on. I'm not sure even I have my finger on it."
