WE all know how easy it can be to get swept away in an episode of Downton Abbey but Brendan Coyle, who plays convicted killer valet Bates in the award-winning series, didn’t realise that seeing his on-screen murder trial would have quite such an impact on his young niece, who burst into tears at the verdict.

“I was watching with my niece, who is 10 years old, on Christmas Day and when the guilty verdict was read out she burst out crying as she was so shocked and upset,” says the 48-year-old actor before rather modestly giving credit for the tear-jerking scene to writer Julian Fellowes rather than his own acting prowess.
