Downton Abbey's Carson admits: we lost our way By DAN WOOTTON PUBLISHED: 16:39 EST, 2 August 2012 | UPDATED: 17:27 EST, 2 August 2012 (MAIL ON LINE)

The second series of ITV’s Downton Abbey was criticised for storylines that moved the focus away from the family drama which had made the show such a success.

Now one of its veteran actors has spoken out to agree that series two, which was set during World War I, lost its way.

Jim Carter, who plays refined butler Mr Carson, tells me the new series, which begins next month, will go back to basics, with a focus on the day-to-day life of the Crawley family.

‘The second series got a bit pacey. There wasn’t much humour,’ the 63-year-old admitted. ‘The new series comes back to the family again and back to the characters we know. It’s going back to how it was, focusing on the relationships between all of them, which is nice.’

After a private cast screening of the first episode, he gave his endorsement. ‘It had that big, rolling and cinematic feeling to it that the first series had,’ he said.
