Benedict Cumberbatch on 'The Hobbit': 'Motion capture is very freeing' Published Monday, Oct 1 2012, 5:21am EDT | By Emma Dibdin (DIGITAL SPY)

The actor, who plays the role of villainous dragon Smaug in Peter Jackson's upcoming trilogy, described the experience of filming using motion capture as liberating.

"You just have to lose your s**t on a carpeted floor, in a place that looks a little bit like a mundane government building. It was just me as well, with four static cameras and all the sensors. Then the boys at Weta work their magic."

Cumberbatch has previously suggested that his appearance in the first film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, may be very limited, with his role expanding in the second installment.

The Hobbit has been selected as this year's Royal Film Performance.
