'Downton Abbey' Season 3 episode 5 spoilers: Death comes to Downton By Andrea Reiher October 15, 2012 11:57 AM ET (ZAP 2 IT)

***SPOILERS***

Well. That was a pretty gut-wrenching hour of television. Kudos to the stars and writers and everyone involved on "Downton" for managing to keep that under wraps (at least over here in the U.S.) because we hadn't heard a peep about it.

We speak, of course, of Lady Sybil dying in childbirth. When she starts to have some labor pains and some trouble, Dr. Clarkson wants to move her to the hospital, but Lord Grantham calls in some stuffy specialist named Sir Phillip, who thinks everything is perfectly normal.

The baby is delivered, it's a little girl. But then Sybil goes into seizures and dies, in an absolutely heartbreaking scene. Big props to Allen Leech and Elizabeth McGovern. It was their reactions that had us sobbing like it was our own relative laying there dying.

Update: We also must address Dame Maggie Smith. On the show, she is really known for her sharp tongue and snarky observations, but this time, she made the end of the episode. Her arrival and the interaction with Carson and her stumbling walk and then her words to Lord Grantham. What a wonderful sequence. Cue that up for next year's Emmy reel.

It was also a lovely touch to see how affected the house staff was, Thomas especially, and to see Mary and Edith sort of come together. And then of coruse, that last shot of Tom with the baby started the waterworks all over again.

This also sets some interesting things in motion -- Cora blames Robert and Sir Phillip for her daughter's death, which is not entirely without merit, though as Lady Violet points out, women have been dying in childbirth for years and years. But Dr. Clarkson was right all along and Cora wanted to listen to him.

Also, where will Tom and the baby end up? The previews for next week show that the Catholic christening is a bone of contention, but Mary was there to hear Sybil's wishes that Tom be allowed to do it and if anybody is going to fight for them, it's Lady Mary.

Should be interesting to watch it play out.
