Jude Law Leads Brit Hopes At Berlin Film Festival (SKY NEWS)

Among the contenders for the Golden Bear top film award is Steven Soderbergh's Side Effects, which stars Jude Law and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Soderbergh has said that Side Effects is to be his last movie, and it tackles the world of prescribed drugs, with Law playing a Manhattan doctor who tries to help a depressed wife by giving her a new superdrug.

Also in contention in Berlin is Prince Avalanche, starring Paul Rudd and the fracking drama Promised Land, which features Matt Damon.

New Dreamworks 3D animation The Croods has also debuted at the festival, with Nicola Cage, Ryan Reynolds and Emma Stone among those providing voices in the prehistoric comedy.

The Berlin prize can raise the profile of low-budget films to a global audience and is an important event in the movie calendar.

Away from the bigger Hollywood films, the impact of Europe-wide austerity measures has provided inspiration for film-makers from countries hardest hit by the financial crisis.
