Review: The Rolling Stones rock Staples in first gig of tour (L A TIMES)

The Rolling Stones -- Ron Wood, left, Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts and Keith Richards -- perform at Staples Center in Los Angeles on Friday night. (Jay L. Clendenin / Los Angeles Times / May 3, 2013)

The Stones -- Jagger, Richards, Watts, Wood and a six-piece support group -- are celebrating 50 years as a band, and did so at a capacity arena with a typical combination of power, nuance and versatility.

That the group only stumbled a few times, most notably when No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani attempted to duet with Jagger on “Wild Horses,” is a testament to both the enduring power of their creations and their continued ability to deliver renegade spirit. After all, these rich men could be relaxing in mansions, going on drunken benders or -- as Richards once memorably did -- falling out of coconut trees.

They are the last band standing, let alone prancing, shaking, shimmying or prowling.

Their cockroach-like survival stands to reason. This is durable music, after all, built on solid foundations that have supported and moved entire cultures. Songs such as “Tumbling Dice,” “Miss You,” “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” and “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” -- all of which they played on Friday -- have fired the neurons of billions of brains.

Or, as Richards eloquently explained in his 2010 autobiography, “Life,” the band offered repeated proof of achieving the ultimate goal of a musician: “to stretch yourself into other people’s hearts.” Richards wrote of the craft as being “almost an obsession,” adding that “to write a song that is remembered and taken to heart is a connection, a touching of bases. A thread that runs through all of us. A stab to the heart.”

The Stones stabbed hearts over and over on Friday. Among the more celebrated victims at the gig were Jack Nicholson, Eddie Murphy, Nicole Kidman and husband Keith Urban, James Caan, Babyface, Melanie Griffith and longtime Stones producer Don Was. During “Brown Sugar,” Nicholson pumped his arms like a teenager along with the other 19,000 fans.

BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH'S SINISTER TRAILER FOR...GRAHAM NORTON....

Jonny Lee Miller to Run Ultra-Marathon in Honor of Jonah's Just Begun Foundation to Cure Sanfilippo (WALL STREET JOURNAL)

Jonny Lee Miller, Lead Actor in the Hit TV Drama Elementary, Will Run His First Ever Ultra-Marathon to Raise Funds for Research and Treatment of Sanfilippo Syndrome

"As if running 50 miles wasn't enough, Jonny appeared on The View to promote the race and joined my family and me for an interview with Dr. Sanjay Gupta on CNN. He has set up a Twitter account to send links on how to donate to his effort on crowdrise," said Weishaar.

Jonah is currently in good health, but Jill Wood, his mother and the co-founder of JJB, says he and other Sanfilippo children are in a race against time. Despite the existence of 7,000 rare diseases and an increasing patient population, the federal government has allocated few funds to the research of these diseases. The science behind the four research programs with which JJB is presently involved is being driven by patient groups and advocates.

The donations raised by Jonny's race effort will help tremendously, and will be put towards finding treatments and a cure.

About Jonah's Just Begun-Foundation to Cure Sanfiliipo Inc.

Jonah's Just Begun -- Foundation to Cure Sanfilippo Inc. is a 501(c)3. JJB raises funds and then distributes them to academic researchers focused on Sanfilippo Type C. We have two goals: first, to drive the science that will ultimately lead to a cure for Sanfilippo Type C; and second, to raise awareness for all rare diseases. We also empower and encourage others affected by rare diseases to advocate for cures.

Martin Freeman Wants to Keep Going with Sherlock Beyond Season Three (411 MANIA)

Posted by Jeremy Thomas on 05.03.2013

He loves doing it...

Martin Freeman may be making the transition toward film like his Sherlock co-star Benedict Cumberbatch, but he doesn't want to leave the series behind either. Freeman, who is currently filming season three of the series with Cumberbatch, told Empire that he would like to keep going beyond a fourth season.

"I believe in doing things for as long as people love them, and all I can say is that I really love the show," he said. "I feel very loyal to it and I like doing it… for as long as they want to do it and as long as we all want to do it....I don't know if I'll be doing it at the age of 90 but for the foreseeable I'm a huge fan of the show."

Richard Armitage: Popcorn Taxis Hobbit Q&A with Richard Armitage May 4th, 2013 by Kelvarhin (ONE RING.NET)

To celebrate the release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in Australia on May 1st, Popcorn Taxi had a special showing of the film with a Q&A session with Richard Armitage.  RingerSpy and long time message board member, Deleece Cook aka Elven, was lucky enough to attend and sent us the following report on the night.

Cremorne Orpheum Theatre, Sydney Australia – Wednesday 1st May, 2013
Introduced by: Chris Murray (Creative Director Popcorn Taxi)
Hosted by: Oscar Hillerstrom from Popcorn Taxi
by: Deleece Cook on behalf of theOneRing.net

700 smiling excited Thorin Fans were in the audience – and they had come from all over Australia for the event – this is what they had been waiting for hours to see. And it didn’t disappoint. It was a wonderful night of entertainment and surprises – Richard was a talkative guest; relaxed, smiling and laughing through the interview and he tried as best as he could to answer every question put to him from the fans, and from the host Oscar Hillerstrom.

Here’s how the night went – plenty of laughter and cheering and just a great vibe all round!…

Chris Murray: “Good Evening! Do I need to ask how you’re doing? Um, I’ve never been to an underwear sale at David Jones but I suppose this is the closest thing. Ladies and Gentlemen my name is Chris Murray and I am the Creative Director of Popcorn Taxi. It gives me no greater pleasure and enormous privilege to have you here tonight to see on the big screen The Hobbit. But not only that I know why you’re here… Richard Armitage on that seat ladies and Gentlemen”

Mad applause.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
 Oscar Hillerstrom: It’s an honour and a privilege to be here with you ladies and gentlemen.  I think not many of you won’t know that Richard Armitage literally ran away to join the circus as a young chap. He has then continued down a career path which I think most people would have been quite  happy with. We have seen him in North & South, Spooks, and of course as Guy of Gisborne in Robin Hood (applause & cheers) – some of you may have even seen these shows, I don’t know (laughter)… but it is the one moment where he had a meeting with some friendly New Zealanders in London – that changed his life, and changed our lives – because it’s a fruition of Actor, Director and soirée which has bought Thorin Oakenshield to life. And now ladies and gentlemen I’d like you to meet the Actor who has done just that. Put your hands together for Mr Richard Armitage.
Richard walked on stage to a deafening round of applause, looking relaxed and happy he greeted and waved to the audience, and then said hello to a few fans that he recognized who had been at a TV studio earlier on in the day. Some fan questions had been sent in from the Richard Armitage Army and Oscar was going to put those questions to Richard in the course of the interview.
Richard sat down in his chair opposite Oscar and they began to talk…
 Oscar Hillerstrom: You brought yourself to Thorin Oakenshield. There’s so many facets of the role but at the same point this is a character that’s is indelible in the mind for many audience – What does in fact playing Thorin Oakenshield leave with you with as a person and an Actor?
Richard Armitage: I think it’s kind of an interesting question because I haven’t left Thorin Oakenshield yet. So, he’s kind of  still with me, but I think the one thing I discovered about myself creating the role was the realization about leadership by example – because I’m not really a born leader as a person and I found in him a nobility which is about leading by example – not necessarily by dictation, so really, that’s the biggest thing I learnt for myself.
Oscar Hillerstrom: So if you’re in trouble… pick up a piece of wood and hit somebody…
Audience: laughter
Oscar Hillerstrom: Words to live by.
Oscar Hillerstrom: One of the most interesting things about this particular character is the heavy make-up that you work with. Were you surprised and shocked by how different you look onscreen – and was the acting process similar to say mask work where you’re trying to convey emotion through that makeup and the giant beards?
Richard Armitage: When I met Peter – you actually get a character breakdown and it does say ‘will be required to wear some prosthetics’ so I knew there would be something whether it was some ears or something like that. But it was extensive and the initial manifestation of Thorin was much greater than what you see there. They worked with my own face to try and make it look like it wasn’t too dramatic – which was a slow process – it changed throughout the course of the filming.
I did do mask work at drama school so it was useful to see my face and try and make it move in the mirror, and I spent a lot of time doing that. I also worked with Tammy  my prosthetics artist to try and make sure that the flashing on the eyes wasn’t too heavy so I could move my eyebrows. And the eyes move in such a sensitive way that I didn’t want it to be prohibitive in any way because I felt that the key to seeing into Thorin’s heart was through his eyes, and I was nervous about having all of that on his face. But I think it worked out ok and when I took the prosthetic off, my face was much more animated than I normally am as a person, but that was because of the muscles being exercised a little bit more.
Killing off Maggie Smith is not in the 'Downton Abbey' script By Diane Bell 6:42 P.M.MAY 3, 2013
Maggie Smith as the Dowager Countess Grantham, is shown in a scene from the second season on "Downton Abbey." She told “60 Minutes” that she hasn't watched the drama because doing so would only make her agonize over her performance. She said she may watch it someday. (AP Photo/PBS, Carnival Film & Television Limited 2011 for MASTERPIECE, Nick Briggs)
Rest assured, "Downton Abbey" fans, the matriarch dowager played by Maggie Smith will not be killed off the highly rated PBS Masterpiece TV series.
That assurance came Thursday from Rebecca Eaton, Masterpiece executive producer.
Unlike the untimely death in the Season 3 finale of the popular Matthew, cut from the cast when Dan Stevens’ acting career called him elsewhere, if Smith must take a hiatus, her character will go on an extended seaside vacation.
“Downton Abbey” creator Julian Fellowes will never “run over her with a car” or close the door on her return, Eaton told a San Diego Rotary gathering. Speculation was fueled by Smith herself on a recent Today show interview when she said of Lady Grantham, “She’s gotta drop down dead at some point.”
Filming is beginning on Season 4 in England. Although it will be broadcast there this fall, Eaton said, it won’t air here until January, both so the actors will be free to promote it and due to PBS scheduling demands.
Keira Knightley weds James Righton in low-key ceremony in front of 11 guests (MAIL ON LINE)
By LAURA COX, J J ANISIOBI and PETER ALLEN
PUBLISHED: 06:54 EST, 4 May 2013 | UPDATED: 07:40 EST, 4 May 2013
Wearing flowers in her hair and skipping for joy, Keira Knightley got married in a low-key in the south of France on Saturday.
The actress, 28, exchanged vows with James Righton, 29, in a low-key ceremony, with just 11 of her closest friends and family.
Mr and Mrs Righton, as they have now become, tied the knot at the town hall in Mazan, a small town around 12 miles from Marseilles.
Knightley, who is worth £30 million, could have have had her pick of cars to pick her up from the wedding and take her to the reception around three miles away.
But the actress chose a silver Renault Clio, which seemed befitting for her casual country-style wedding.
She looked low-key but elegant in a strapless white dress with a tuille skirt and pale pink pumps.
She wore a cropped Chanel jacket on top and her hair was left loose, with a daisy-chain style garland around her head.
The short ceremony took place just before 12 midday and guests gathered at the doors as the couple skipped out hand in hand.
Miss Knightley clutched a bouquet and allowed Mr Righton to lead her to the car.
The guests were also dressed casually. Mother of the bride, Sharman MacDonald, who is hosting a reception this afternoon, wore a blue and white silk dress while Mr Righton's father, Nicholas, and brother, Bill, dressed down in chinos.
Some of the guests returned to the nearby Chateau de Mazan, where they are staying, to toast the happy couple with champagne.
Others headed straight to Ms Macdonald's £3 million house, about three miles outside of the medieval Provence town.
The eight-bedroom property, which is shielded by conifers, sits among 20 acres of vineyards and olive trees.
Rolling Stones struggle to sell tickets, forced to release low-priced seats ahead of L.A. concert (NEW YORK DAILY NEWS) REUTERS
Mick Jagger (l.) and Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones will kick off their North American tour at L.A.'s Staples Center Friday night.
Wild horses couldn't drag many of the most die-hard of Rolling Stones fans to the kick-off of the band's North American tour - at least not at prices of up to a whopping $600 a ticket.
Three weeks after tickets went on sale, and a day before the British band take the stage on Friday, the Los Angeles Staples Center was far from sold out for the "50 and Counting" gig.
Secondary ticket sellers StubHub had more than 500 tickets available 24 hours before the May 3 show, Good Seat tickets said they were slashing re-sale prices by 40 percent, and Epic Nation rolled out a 10 percent discount code.
The veteran rock band announced on their official website this week that they were releasing an additional number of tickets at a modest $85, the only price point that quickly sold out for the May 3 concert.
According to the website, some of the $85 seats will be among the best seats in house in the "Tongue Pit," with others spread around the arena. Buyers will be notified of their seat location on the day of the show.
Concert promoters AEG denied they were cutting prices, saying tickets once thought to have an obstructed view had come to light after the tongue and lip shaped stage was set up.
"Seeing (the stage) in this setting for the first time, we were able to determine that seats previously thought to have obstructed views were in fact unobstructed and could immediately be offered to fans for $85 each," AEG said in a statement.
On Thursday, seats at prices ranging from $250 to $600 were still available, according to the AXS website operated by AEG, which owns the Staples Center arena that seats about 19,000 people.
THE BEATLES, ‘FROM ME TO YOU’ – LYRICS UNCOVERED by Bryan Wawzenek May 2, 2013 9:30 AM (CLASSIC ROCK)
In Feb. 1963, John Lennon and Paul McCartney were sitting in the back of a tour bus, seeing if they could rise to the occasion. With ‘Please Please Me’ riding high on the British charts, producer George Martin had issued the Beatles’ budding songwriters a challenge: bring a new composition of equal quality to their next studio session.
Lennon and McCartney had penned ‘Thank You Girl’ at this point, but weren’t opposed to seeing if they could come up with something stronger. On Feb. 28, inspiration struck on the way to Shewsbury.
“The night Paul and I wrote ‘From Me to You,’ we were on the Helen Shapiro tour, on the coach, travelling from York to Shrewsbury,” Lennon remembered in ‘Anthology.’ “We weren’t taking ourselves seriously – just fooling around on the guitar – when we began to get a good melody line, and we really started to work at it. Before that journey was over, we’d completed the lyric, everything. I think the first line was mine and we took it from there.
“What puzzled us was why we’d thought of a name like ‘From Me to You.’ It had me thinking when I picked up the ‘NME’ to see how we were doing in the charts. Then I realized – we’d got the inspiration from reading a copy on the coach. Paul and I had been talking about one of the letters in the From You to Us column.”
Although Lennon and McCartney thought they had something worthwhile, not everyone on the bus agreed. Singer Kenny Lynch (also on the Helen Shapiro tour) tried to assist the boys with their writing, but gave up on them after hearing them put in a falsetto “Whoo!” “You can’t do that! You’ll sound like f—ing fairies,” he shouted. Of course, those high-pitched “whoos” would become an early trademark that the Fab Four employed again when composing their next hit single, ‘She Loves You.’
David Tennant: Anger over David Tennant’s sick rape scene BBC expecting backlash over sadistic episode of The Politician's Husband (THE SUN)
Exclusive
By LAURA CAROE
BBC bosses are braced for a backlash over sadistic sex scenes to be shown minutes after tonight’s 9pm watershed.
Former Doctor Who favourite David Tennant will be seen raping his wife in a horrific 70-second scene in The Politician’s Husband.
David — playing Cabinet minister Aiden Hoynes in the BBC2 drama — takes out his jealousy over his politician partner’s soaring career in a graphic and sickening act.
Chiefs fear the appalling attack, airing five minutes into the second episode, will be met with uproar and a flood of complaints.
Vivienne Pattison, director of pressure group Media Watch UK, slated the decision to show “adult material” immediately after the 9pm divide.
She said: “The Politician’s Husband will be following on from snooker.
“Snooker to sadistic sex is quite an extreme leap and care should be taken to avoid putting the most ‘challenging’ material immediately after 9pm.”
And Katie Russell, of charity Rape Crisis, insisted viewers should be warned of the sexually violent nature of the show before they watch it.
She said: “It’s important that any programme planning to screen such scenes carries clear and repeated warnings to avoid triggering flashbacks or distressing and re-traumatising sexual violence survivors.” During the shocking encounter, Aiden’s MP wife Freya Gardner, played by double Oscar nominee Emily Watson, is seen locking lips in bed with her husband.
But within seconds the mood changes and what started out as simple sex becomes a sinister power game.
Tom Hiddleston suffered caffeine withdrawal on poverty challenge (NEW)
Actor TOM HIDDLESTON suffered crippling headaches during his poverty awareness challenge as he was forced to battle his addiction to caffeine.
The Thor star spent a week surviving on just £1 a day to support a United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) campaign in aid of starving children, and he had to give up tea and coffee to keep within his tight budget.
Hiddleston admits cutting out caffeine made him feel ill, but he eventually found he could live without it.
In a piece for Harper's Bazaar magazine, he writes, "I realised that I have an addiction to caffeine and coffee. For most of the morning on the first few days I found it very hard to concentrate on simple tasks, without a cup of coffee. This won't come as news to anyone who has ever tried to go cold turkey - and to stop taking a substance they are addicted to. But after a few days, my head cleared, and I found a more sustainable equilibrium."
Hiddleston, who completed the Live Below The Line challenge last month (Apr13), admits the scheme helped him become a better cook and stop being so wasteful with food.
He adds, "(It) made me think about food in an entirely different way. I had to plan better, to budget better. I didn't waste a penny, or a crumb. It was a test of mind and will power... I had to cook my own meals and not buy food on the go...
Benedict Cumberbatch: Styling My Hair Was 'The Hardest Thing' About Star Trek Into Darkness (E.) BY SHAUN KITCHENER ON MAY 2, 2013
Benedict Cumberbatch has joked that styling his hair was the hardest part of his work on Star Trek Into Darkness.
Speaking at a press conference for the movie today, the British star told journalists including EntertainmentWise that his barnet provided the greatest challenge on-set.
"Which way to do my hair was the hardest thing," he said. "Straight or curly, or long with bangs, or a sort of ponytail or maybe no hair!"
Benedict then added: "No, it was such a sort of whirlwind for me that it was just one ball of excitement from beginning to end."
Meanwhile, Zachary Quinto opened up about his biggest challenge for the sequel: "There's a real challenge for me playing Spock, who is erroneously assumed to have no emotion and to show that there is a deep well of emotion actually in this character. But I would have to say that shaving my eyebrows takes the biscuit," before joking: "And I've got the bangs covered Benedict so you don't have to worry about that!"
JJ Abrams, who directed the movie, also told how Cumberbatch got cast... via iPhone.
"I was told to check out Sherlock," he said, referring to his work on the BBC series. "[I was] of course blown away."
David Tennant: Doctor Who 50th anniversary: David Tennant confirmed as only returning Doctor (THE TELEGRAPH)
By Alice Vincent,
Entertainment writer,
After months of speculation about which, if any, previous Doctor Who actors would return for the show's 50th anniversary episode, David Tennant alone has been confirmed.
The new issue of Doctor Who Magazine, out today, states: “Although David Tennant has returned to his role of the Tenth Doctor, the other old Doctors will not be taking part.”
The hour-long 3D episode, which will air in November, began filming in April. However, rumours in February suggested that all 11 Time Lords would be involved, with those who have died recreated using technology.
However, in April, the BBC released a statement confirming that Christopher Eccleston, who played the ninth doctor, would not be appearing despite having been in talks with Doctor Who writer Steven Moffat.
Previous Doctor actors Paul McGann, Sylvester McCoy, Colin Baker, Peter Davison and Tom Baker have all discussed appearing in the episode, but say they haven't been asked.
'I've got Washington in the palm of my hand,;' he wrote on his Twitter page, perhaps also in reference to his latest movie Olumpus Has Fallen in which he saves the capital from terrorist attack.
In another shot, he posts a picture of himself enjoying a 'Man Date' with Piers Morgan on their way to the Correspondent's Dinner, looking dapper in a suit and bow tie.
However, the 43-year-old star was back in Beverly Hills on Wednesday, running errands in the city looking casual in jeans, shirt and boots.
Benedict Cumberbatch: The director of Star Trek Into Darkness says he was "blown away" by the British star in the hit BBC drama (RADIO TIMES)
Ellie Walker-Arnott
12:46 PM, 02 May 2013
Watching Benedict Cumberbatch in Sherlock was "the perfect medicine" and "working with Benedict exceeded all expectations", according to J.J. Abrams, the director behind Star Trek Into Darkness.
Speaking at the film's press conference, Abrams discussed the decision to cast the Sherlock star as the villain in his latest Star Trek instalment, saying: "I'm very grateful to the writers, notably Damon [Lindelof] who said 'you should check out Sherlock' which I had not done. And when we were casting this part it was the perfect medicine for what we were suffering from, which was not really being able to figure out who was someone who inspired us in the way that we needed."
"I saw Sherlock, and was of course blown away, and then called Benedict and we spoke. Benedict famously auditioned on an iPhone and when we watched that video it was 100% clear we'd found our man," added Abrams.
Of working with the much-loved British star on set, Abrams said: "Working with Benedict frankly exceeded all expectations and I think that everyone on the set stood a little bit taller when he was around."
BRITISH actor Benedict Cumberbatch is the toast of Hollywood with a starring turn in new movie Star Trek Into Darkness - and now he's set his sights on a James Bond-style role.
The hugely popular Sherlock star tells TV Magazine that stacking on muscle for his role as villainous John Harrison in the sci-fi film has given him the taste for a Daniel Craig-type gig.
"Star Trek is, to all intents and purposes, an action movie as much as it is a sci-fi drama, so that involved a hell of a lot of training and long hours,” he says. “I had to put weight on, so I’d eat 4,000 calories a day. I went up four suit sizes at one point – it was hard work but a lot of fun.
“I’d love to transform my body into some ridiculous war machine. I want to run around a desert shooting guns at aliens and looking as if I barely have to take a breath.
“I would love to do all that s***. I definitely want my Daniel Craig moment!”
COLIN FIRTH: Woody Allen recruits Firth for French film | Print version Updated: 01 May 2013 11:02 GMT+02:00 (THE LOCAL - FRANCE'S NEWS IN ENGLISH)
The as-yet-untitled film, to be shot this summer, will be the second set in France by the 77-year-old cult director, who scored his biggest commercial hit ever with 2011's "Midnight in Paris."
Allen has made a series of Europe-based movies in recent years – "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" in 2008 and 2012's "To Rome with Love" – and has hired a number of collaborators from those movies for the new film.
Cinematographer Darius Khondji, production designer Anne Seibel and costume designer Sonia Grande all worked on "Midnight in Paris" and "To Rome with Love," while Grande also worked on "Vicky Cristina Barcelona."
The new Gravier Productions film is produced by Allen's longtime associates, Letty Aronson and Stephen Tenenbaum, who have worked with Allen for a decade and a half, they said in a statement.
After early classics like "Annie Hall" (1977), 1979's "Manhattan" and "Hannah and Her Sisters" in 1986, Allen fans had become used to mild disappointment with his annual output, until the last five or ten years.
Benedict Cumberbatch reveals why Sherlock is "too busy for sex" or a girlfriend (SOFEMININE.CO.UK)
The nation's favourite detective has been revived by one of the nation's favourite actors. Benedict Cumberbatch's role as Sherlock in the BBC drama has won him legions of fans, many of them female. Benedict talks about why his character would have no time for a girlfriend, while he himself deals with his new sex symbol status.
Benedict Cumberbatch has played Sherlock in the BBC drama for three years - so he knows his character pretty well by now.
The Brit star has been revealing a few more intimate details about the Arthur Conan Doyle character, who he describes as almost asexual so he can commit himself to working out the mysteries.
She told The Sun: "“He’s repressed his sexual drive and a lot of other things in his life, simply because he doesn’t want to waste his time. The man’s too busy to have sex - that’s really what it is.
“Not every man has a sex drive that needs to be attended to.
“Like a lot of things in his life where he’s purposely dehumanised himself, it’s to do with not wanting the stuff that is time-wasting, that’s messy. That goes for certain relationships as well as sexual intimacy.
“To the Victorian eye he’s an eccentric, but I think he has purposely repressed those things.”
The Harrow alumnus is currently working on the third series with Martin Freeman as his trusty sidekick Dr Watson.
The show fast became one of British Tv's biggest hits - and Benedict he admits he enjoys the positive recognition he receives from his lead role.
He said: “When people stop you in the street and want to congratulate you on your work and express their joy at having seen you in the show you feel great.
“His appeal is universal. He’s the ultimate outsider hero. He’s a very difficult, odd entity. He’s got a God complex - he suspects he’s not human and therefore everyone else is just a let-down to him."
The man behind the magnifying glass also revealed that this latest series will show a more sensitive side to his character.
He said: “It’s about him coming to terms with the fact that he can do a better job if he has a little bit of morality, feeling and emotion and to be able to play with those things without necessarily being taken over by them."
This may allude to the rumours that there's going to be a wedding in this series - specifically that of his companion Dr Watson.
Meet Downton Abbey’s First Black Cast Member by Julie Miller (VANITY FAIR)
Julian Fellowes has made good on his promise to diversify the halls of Downton Abbey. Today, we learn that the British TV drama has cast its first black actor in a role teased to us several months ago.
Downton-ites (CC: Newt Gingrich), meet Gary Carr, the show’s newest casting addition and latest attempt to fill the gaping hole left by departing actors Dan Stevens, Jessica Brown Findlay, and Siobhan Finneran. Carr will play “Jack Ross, a male musician in the 25-to-30-year-old range who plays at an exclusive club in the 20s.” (Controversial fling for Edith, anyone?) Earlier this year, Downton producers were reportedly looking for someone “black and very handsome” who could play a “real man (not a boy) with charm and charisma.”
Judging by a YouTube interview on the Web series “The Syrus Lowe Down” uploaded in February (below), we can confirm that the 26-year-old English actor—who co-stars on the BBC comedy/crime drama Death in Paradise—is indeed very handsome and appears to be quite charming! While his Wikipedia page contains disappointingly few details, it does mention that Carr is a dancer and musician in addition to being an actor.
Benedict Cumberbatch takes over the world Neil Simpson 1 May 2013 15:09 (THE SPECTATOR)
What do you do if you wake up to discover your colleagues have told the papers you don’t deserve your job? If you’re Benedict Cumberbatch, you just stick to your Star Trek script and carry on trying to destroy the world.
Benedict was right there in the crossfire when Downton Abbey’s Rob James-Collier said actors from public schools have it easy and are sucking up all the best jobs. James-Collier (double-barrelled, but Stockport-born working class) reckons you need a rich family behind you if you’re to survive the auditions circuit and stick it out till some decent-paying jobs come along. Worse still, James-Collier isn’t sure that the rich kids make the best actors. ‘If I’d had a comfort blanket I wouldn’t have been as passionate and driven,’ he said.
Having spent the first part of this year examining all things Cumberbatch for a new Behind the Scenes biography, I’ve got to say that The Batch is about as passionate and driven as they come. Yes, he went to Harrow. Yes, Downton’s Julian Fellowes is a pal of his actor parents. Yes, he admits he’s the ultimate ‘posh bloke with a silly name’. But that’s not stopped the new Star Trek baddie from paying his dues.
Agents and casting directors I spoke to say Benedict surprises everyone by the number – and the variety – of jobs he takes on. If there’s an overlap of dates he’ll try to juggle things so he can take as many roles as possible. If there’s a choice between a holiday and a job – even something as low-paying as a Radio 4 comedy show – then he always takes the job.
Why the ferocious work ethic? It’s partly because he wants to prove himself to the world, and to his peers. It’s also because he’s terrified of being type-cast. For years the man The Sun calls ‘the brooding brainbox’ worried that he would be forever cast as ‘slightly asexual, sociopathic intellectuals’. And there are less of those on telly than you might think, especially in drama.
That’s why he still reads radio scripts and won’t rule out a return to live theatre. That’s why he is going back to Wales this year to film the third series of Sherlock – even though you might expect him to be kicking back in Hollywood. After the madness of Star Trek we’ll see him act alongside Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep and Laura Linney in a trio of big films before Christmas.
He’s certainly hoovering up a lot of great jobs. But that’s not because he had posh parents. It’s not because his posh school gave him an unfair head-start. In fact, when Harrow old-boy Andrew Birkin tried to give Benedict the lead in The Cement Garden, the teenager turned him down.
Richard Armitage: Great Dan & Maz Interview Richard Armitage, star of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey!
Richard Armitage: It cost $1.6m to get a face like this! Richard Armitage's Thorin make-over for The Hobbit By Kate Midena May 01, 2013 1:32PM (Adelaide Now)
EVER wondered what it would take to make a beautiful man look like a dwarf?
Three hours in the make-up chair, ten test faces, a wig, a beard, some body padding, eight weeks of dwarf-walk training and $1.6 million worth of prosthetics.
Richard Armitage, who plays Thorin Oakenshield in the JRR Tolkien/Peter Jackson-adapted The Hobbit, revealed to news.com.au the lengths it took to transform him into the King Under The Mountain.
"Well it's my beard, which I'm growing back in time for the next lot of filming, the hair is a wig which strangely a lot of people don't realise, but the forehead the eyebrows and the nose are all prosthetics.
"It takes about three hours to get ready - about an hour and a half for the face and 45 minutes for the hair. If we started shooting at eight o'clock we would have to be in the chair at 4.30am. That's over 270 film days.
"Each piece had a price tag on it that would make you baulk. They cost about $2000 each, you only stick them on once because they’re so delicate, and once the day is over you throw them in the bin. I had a collection of Thorin's eyebrows stuck to the wall, each eyebrow hair had to be punched in by hand, and if you think that every single time it has to be identical, it's just a work of art. Our prosthetic artist would spend each night punching eyebrow hairs into the mould, being so meticulous about it. It's a whole new world of skill.”
But the real question for Armitage, who won legions of fans thanks to his roles as Lucas North on Spooks and John Thornton in North & South, is: Why cover up such a delightful nose in the first place? It has, after all, inspired countless tumblr pages, websites and blog posts.
"Do people really think that about my nose? I spent my whole life hating it so it's amusing that people like it!" Armitage said
"When they started putting a big nose on me I was like, ‘Are you sure I really need this?’ I could have gotten away with not having it! But funnily enough at the end of the day, I'd pull the nose off and hold it there just to see what it looked like and my own nose looked so tiny, it was great."
