FX Sons of Anarchy Charlie Hunnam

The “Sons of Anarchy” alum joins Robert Pattinson and Sienna Miller in James Gray’s movie
“Sons of Anarchy” alum Charlie Hunnam will replace Benedict Cumberbatch in James Gray‘s “Lost City of Z,” which also stars Robert Pattinson and Sienna Miller, it was announced Tuesday by MICA Entertainment, which has come on board to finance the film.

Cumberbatch was forced to drop out of the project due to Marvel’s “Doctor Strange,” and now rising movie star Hunnam will play Col. Percival Fawcett in the adaptation of David Grann’s acclaimed bestseller.

Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner are producing via Plan B Entertainment along with Dale Johnson and Anthony Katagas. Marc Butan is executive producing, as are MICA’s Julie B. May and Glenn Murray.

Sierra/Affinity will continue to handle international sales of the title at this year’s European Film Market. CAA represents the domestic rights to the film. Production is slated to start this summer.

“Lost City of Z” follows Percy Fawcett, a British colonial who disappeared in the 1920s while searching for a mythical city in the Amazon jungles of Brazil that he believed he discovered on a prior expedition.

'Selma' star David Oyelowo on his incredible transformation

CNN
By Lisa Respers France, CNN
Updated 6:49 AM ET, Wed January 7, 2015

(CNN)The man who stars as the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in "Selma" seems as divinely appointed to the role as the leader he portrays was to the civil rights movement.

David Oyelowo said it was seven years ago when he read the script for the film about the marches in the Alabama city and the fight to pass the Voting Rights Act of 1965. He so felt God telling him the role of King was meant for him that he wrote the date down to remember it.

But it was a long road for the British actor who was faced with everything from being little known beyond small parts in films like "The Last King of Scotland" to those connected to the film having a different vision for who should star. Yet Oyelowo never lost faith. He told CNN that he took the challenge of playing one of history's giants very seriously.

"Doubt ... never really beset me," he said. "What did hit me were moments of feeling the weight ... and the responsibility to get it right."

The film focuses on three months in Selma, Alabama, in 1965 when nonviolent protesters held civil rights marches including "Bloody Sunday," when law enforcement clashed with demonstrators using billy clubs and tear gas on Selma's Edmund Pettus Bridge.

Some lost their lives in the midst of the tension over the protests and Oyelowo said that in studying King he learned a great deal about how conflicted the leader felt during that time.

"The thing that really struck me was the weight and the guilt he felt about the people who were killed," the actor said.

Time magazine has called "Selma" "the film of the year" and noted that "This solid, expertly managed drama, with its stark images of good men standing up to entrenched government evil, has earned critical hosannahs and could be the breakout favorite among year-end contenders for the Academy Award." Oyelowo's performance has been hailed for embracing both King the legend and the man.

"Oyelowo is superb in the central role of King, capturing his famous cadences without ever descending into mimicry," Christopher Orr wriote for The Atlantic. "This is a life-sized portrait of a larger-than-life figure, and never more so than in the scenes between King and his wife Coretta (Carmen Ejogo), their marriage strained not only by the ever-present threat of violence but also by his own serial infidelities, which the movie handles with tact but does not shy away from."

The star is not the only one who sees a greater hand in the project.

Oprah Winfrey served as one of the producers on the film and has a small role. She told Variety she believes it's not accidental that the film, which will open nationwide on January 9, is being released at a time when the nation is once again focused on race in the wake of the controversial deaths of black men in Ferguson, Missouri, and New York City.

"Divine timing is what it is," said Winfrey, who also co-starred with Oyelowo in "Lee Daniels' The Butler" and has become his mentor.

Oscar buzz is ever present for the movie in every category from best picture to best director for Ava DuVernay, who could become the first African-American woman nominated in the category. In addition to Winfrey, Brad Pitt also played a producing role, and the film festival circuit seems to have fallen in love with the movie.

True Detective Season 2 Cast Rumors: Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn to Star HBO's Hit Show

THE CHRISTIAN TIMES
Raianne Fe Aguhar
05 OCTOBER, 2014

The Sunday World has confirmed that Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn are to star the hugely anticipated show, True Detective Season 2.

38-year old Farrell, who has signed up for the series, said in an interview, "I'm doing the second series. I'm so excited."

"I know it will be eight episodes and take around four or five months to shoot. I know very little about it, but we're shooting in the environs of Los Angeles which is great. It means I get to stay at home and see the kids", he added.

The description for Farrell's character (Ray Velcoro) reads, "a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him."

The continuous name dropping has become an Internet circus. The latest rumor is that Elisabeth Moss will be joining the cast as well. This has not been confirmed, but it has sparked excitement among fans — yet again.

Big names being linked to the upcoming show include Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Michael Fassbender, Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin and Christian Bale. However, none of these stars have been confirmed by HBO. In fact, the network has kept mum on the cast rumors.

Until HBO releases an official list of the main cast for True Detective Season 2, it looks like fans will have to play "guessing game" a little longer.

BAFTA Awards: ‘12 Years A Slave’ Wins Best Film But ‘Gravity’ Carries Most Weight With Six Total Nods; Chiwetel Ejiofor & Cate Blanchett Take Actor Wins; ‘American Hustle’ Scores 3 Including For Jennifer Lawrence

The EE British Academy Film Awards: Dinner - Red Carpet ArrivalsEE British Academy Film Awards 2014 - Winners Room

Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave rallied from a slow stat to win the Best Film award tonight at the 62nd BAFTA Film Awards in London. The slave drama from Fox Searchlight had 10 nominations but won just two awards, after Chiwetel Ejiofor took the Leading Actor prize for playing Solomon Northrup. Despite the marquee victory in the last major kudofest before the Oscars, it still seemed as though the night belonged to Warner Bros’ Gravity. The space drama picked up a leading six wins from its 11 overall nominations, including for Outstanding British Film — which will keep the debate going about just how British the pic is. Alfonso Cuaron won Best Director and the pic cleaned up in the craft categories, taking Sound, Cinematography and Special Visual Effects in addition to a nod for Steven Price’s Original Score. The BAFTA crowd at the packed Royal Opera House in Covent Garden exploded with each win for the movie, which had a leading 11 nominations going into the night.

Still, the 12 Years A Slave victory tonight maintains the film’s front-runner status going into the Oscars on March 2; the film also won the Golden Globe for Motion Picture-Drama. Many feel the Academy will lean the same way, honoring Gravity in the craft categories but not for the Best Picture. The two films have been going head to head all awards season, even scrapping to a rare tie in the PGA Awards contest. “It’s very important,” McQueen said backstage after the victory. “The way the public here — but not just here, in the U.S. — by going to see the picture, means a hell of a lot.” Added producer Brad Pitt: “This is an excuse for us to all get to gather and say job well done. We’re very proud of our work here, and it means a lot to us because of the people we got to work with.”

The survey asked 300 women who they'd most like to enjoy a romantic dinner with on February 14th, seeing the British actor beat a long list of Hollywood heartthrobs.

Prince William also joined Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt and Will Smith among the top 10 names, while Danny Dyer stole 7% of the vote thanks to his newfound soap career.

The People Have Spoken: Tom Hiddleston Is The Sexiest Man Alive.

MTV
By Kase Wickman

Our apologies to Adam Levine (and Maroons 1 through 4), but it's time to relinquish the crown of sexiness.

Last month, the musician and "The Voice" judge was deemed the Sexiest Man Alive by People magazine, an honor that has been bestowed upon the likes of Brad Pitt, Channing Tatum and Jude Law in the past. Our readers (who hold the undisputed title of Sexiest Readers Alive, so they know what they're talking about) begged to disagree.

So with all due respect to People, the people have spoken.

The true Sexiest Man Alive is Tom Hiddleston. Bam, you got Loki'd.

Michael Fassbender says he "keeled over" during filming

RTE
 October 30, 2013

The German-Irish actor is tipped for an Oscar for his portrayal of sadistic plantation owner Edwin Epps in the forthcoming film by director Steve McQueen.

Fassbender (36) said that a scene where he had to attack a young slave girl proved too much for him and he "keeled over" in front of the film crew.

“That was a kind of strange one,” he told Express.co.uk. “I just blacked out and came to sort of in the middle of the scene. That has never happened to me.”

In the movie, which has seen film-goers leaving cinemas in tears at the brutal depiction of slavery, Epps delights in abusing slave girl Patsey, who is played by 30-year-old Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o.

“You are doing things that are quite challenging. I guess mentally and physically,” Fassbender said. "The good thing is it’s over in a short period of time, so it’s a very intense focus for a concentrated amount of time.

For Michael Fassbender, meeting and working with Brad Pitt on 2009's Inglourious Basterds was a life-changing experience.

"Brad is a wonderful human being who has a generous soul," Fassbender, 36, told PEOPLE at Wednesday's Cinema Society and Emporio Armani screening of his new film The Counselor in New York. "I have a lot of reasons to thank him. He has always been a real champion for me."

In addition to The Counselor, the Irish-German actor reteams with his Basterds costar in the Oscar-buzzy movie 12 Years a Slave, opening Oct. 18.

"After we first worked together, he was talking to a lot of people in Hollywood about me, and I really thank him for doing that," says the brooding X-Men and Shame star.

"Brad not only supported me, but he also encouraged and helped other young talent. He is one of those guys that we need in the industry."

Fassbender adds, "12 Years a Slave wouldn't have happened without Brad and his company, Plan B. I'm very grateful that he became a part of it."

Why Michael Fassbender’s Sex Scene With Penelope Cruz Was Awkward

CELEBRITY NEWSIE
October 8, 2013

Michael Fassbender and Penelope Cruz participate in a sex scene in Ridley Scott’s new film, “The Counselor,” and in a new interview with E! Online, Fassbender confirms that the pretend intercourse was as uncomfortable as one might imagine.

“It’s always a bit awkward, really. Doing scenes like that, especially cause Javier [Bardem] was sitting at the end of the bed. That was really weird,” Fassbender joked to the network. (Bardem and Cruz are married.) “You just wanna make sure that the other person is comfortable and that the other person doesn’t feel like you’re taking advantage of any situation. And then to just try and feel safe with one another really and then you can really hopefully sell what needs to be sold.”

In the new film, which is based on an original script by Cormac McCarthy, Fassbender plays a lawyer who gets caught up in the drug trade (Cruz, Bardem, Brad Pitt and Cameron Diaz round out the all-star cast). “The Counselor” is out in theaters on Oct. 25, giving Fassbender two high-profile releases in the month of October (the other being “12 Years A Slave”).

Irish dreamboat Michael Fassbender admits that Oscar would be the 'icing on the cake'.

Finally, an actor who is honest enough to admit that receiving an Oscar nod would not be the worst thing in the world. With two major movies coming out this year, our very own Michael Fassbender admitted to Sky News that receiving a nomination would in fact be 'the icing on the cake'.

Fassbender enters dark territory in both movies and it's widely believed that the roles that he has taken on are bona fide Oscar bait. In The Counselor he plays a lawyer who finds himself in the world of organised crime while in 12 Years a Slave, which sees him reunited with Shame director Steve McQueen, he plays an, ahem, morally corrupt slave owner.

Another clip from THE COUNSELOR has been released and although it’s not anything spectacular, it is great to see two heavyweight actors give a little back and forth in a short clip.  The clip features Brad Pitt advising Michael Fassbender to not do what he’s about to do.  This one is pretty high on my radar of movies to see this fall and we’re only a month away from catching it in theaters.  THE COUNSELOR stars: Michael Fassbender, Javier Bardem, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz, Natalie Dormer, Goran Visnjic, Dean Norris, John Leguizamo and Rosie Perez. The Ridley Scott directed film hits theaters on October 25th, 2013.

Michael Fassbender Talks "Difficult" Rape, Whipping Scenes in 12 Years a Slave, Thanks Brad Pitt for Film

Michael Fassbender

E.
by NATALIE FINN

Michael Fassbender probably wouldn't be surprised to learn that audible sobbing has been heard at screenings of 12 Years a Slave, including from the audience at the drama's premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The German-born actor, in his third collaboration with director Steve McQueen, admits that the film is tough to watch—some parts more than others. And it was no picnic to shoot, either.

"For me, the rape scene was most difficult to film and probably the most difficult to watch was the whipping scene," Fassbender, who plays a sadistic plantation owner, told E! News at the film's press junket.

Lucky for everyone involved with the impressively cast ensemble tear-jerker, for which star Chiwetel Ejiofor is already getting Oscar buzz, they had each other.

"There are heavy, intense moments when you're on set and filming. But we had a lot of support within each other, a lot of respect, a lot of love on that crew and amongst the actors," Fassbender said, "so we were looking after each other, you know."

Brad Pitt has a small role in the film as a Canadian carpenter, but Fassbender credits the actor's role behind the scenes as the one that really brought the based-on-a-true-story 12 Years a Slave to life.

OTTAWA—British filmmaker Steve McQueen’s “12 Years a Slave” won the audience prize for best picture at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday.

The film, already generating Oscars buzz, is based on a firsthand account of Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in 1841, recalling the horrors of grueling labor, daily humiliation and families torn apart.

Its premiere in Toronto last week received a standing ovation, as well as sobs, while some in the audience left early over the film’s graphic portrayal of unspeakable torture of slaves during this period in history.

The story is “a gift from the past to open a discussion, not about race, particularly, but about human dignity and our freedoms and what we most require in the world,” said actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, who plays Northup.

“And the only way to really open that discussion is to see all sides of it.”

The film also stars Michael Fassbender as a cruel plantation owner, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano, Garret Dillahunt, Paul Giamatti, Scoot McNairy, Lupita Nyong’o, Adepero Oduye, Sarah Paulson, Brad Pitt, Michael Kenneth Williams and Alfre Woodard.

Toronto: 12 Years a Slave premieres to ecstatic reactions and Oscar lockdown for Michael Fassbender

Catherine Shoard
theguardian.com, Friday 6 September 2013 23.04 EDT

The Oscar race has been pronounced over, six months before the ceremony itself. At the Toronto film festival, the premiere of British director Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave was met on Friday evening with an overwhelming reception: gasps, sobs, a smattering of walk-outs at particularly brutal moments, and finally, a prolonged standing ovation.

The crowds leaving the auditorium were primed to place bets on the film being an unbeatable contender for best picture, as well as McQueen for best director, best actor for Chiwetel Ejiofor, best supporting actor for Michael Fassbender, best supporting actress for Lupita Nyong'o, as well as the full slate of technical nods.

12 Years a Slave met with ecstatic reviews when a sneak preview debuted at the boutique film festival in Telluride last week, but the raves coming out of Toronto are likely the crucial second step in what looks certain to be a triumphant awards campaign.

McQueen's third feature as director, following 2008's Hunger and 2011's Shame, 12 Years a Slave is very faithfully adapted from the memoir by Solomon Northup, a free man living with his family in relative affluence near New York, who in 1841 was duped, drugged, abducted and sold into slavery. John Ridley adapted the book for the big screen, McQueen's partner, Bianca Stigter - who he thanked on stage before the premiere - was the person who originally suggested it as a source.

Benedict Cumberbatch plays Solomon's first, more progressive owner; Michael Fassbender - McQueen's longterm collaborator - his much less benevolent second. Slave shares much of the aesthetic (particularly the unflinching violence) that distinguished McQueen's earlier films, yet here the splashy tech setpieces have been cast aside. This is a film in the service of both its story and a hero who's much more unequivocally sympathetic than those from Hunger and Shame. The odd flash of McQueen's installation-origins remains - a burnt piece of paper in the pitch black night, its embers dying like shrinking larvae - but this is also accessible and immediate; a winning mix of mainstream and arthouse.

Benedict Cumberbatch to head into jungle for 'Lost City Of Z'

Benedict Cumberbatch as John Harrison in 'Star Trek Into Darkness'.

By Jack Klompus

Benedict Cumberbatch has been linked to a role in Lost City Of Z, the upcoming explorer movie directed by We Own The Night's James Gray.

The actor will star in the film based on David Grann's bestselling book. Cumberbatch is thought to have left Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak for this, rather than Star Wars Episode 7 which he has denied involvement in.

Lost City Of Z, adapted by Gray, will feature Cumberbatch as Percy Fawcett, a British Colonel who disappeared into a jungle trying to find a legendary City of Z during the 1920s, Deadline reports.

Brad Pitt's Plan B production company is behind the movie and it was first believed Pitt would be playing the part of Percy.

Cumberbatch can next be seen in WikiLeaks drama The Fifth Estate.

Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Fassbender: 12 Years a Slave: Telluride Review

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
7:04 PM PDT 8/31/2013 by Todd McCarthy

The Bottom Line
A strong, involving, at times overstated telling of an extraordinary life story.

Venue
Telluride Film Festival

Opens
October 18 (Fox Searchlight)

Cast
Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano, Garrett Dillahunt, Paul Giamatti

Director
Steve McQueen

The recent popular revenge fantasy Django Unchained notwithstanding, there have been so few good and strong films about slavery in America that, for this reason alone, 12 Years A Slave stands quite tall. With director Steve McQueen dedicating himself to detailing the “peculiar institution” with as many dreadful particulars as he can, Chiwetel Ejiofor leads a fine cast with a superior performance as the real-life Solomon Northup, a free black man from New York who was kidnapped in 1841 and sold into Southern slavery until being miraculously rescued. Perhaps the nature of the story is such that the film can’t help but be obvious and quite melodramatic at times, but it gets better as it goes along and builds to a moving finish. Despite the upsetting and vivid brutality, Fox Searchlight has a winner here that will generate copious media coverage, rivet the attention of the black public, stir much talk in political and educational circles and appeal to film audiences who crave something serious and different.

Northup published a memoir of his 12-year nightmare in 1853, the year after Uncle Tom’s Cabin came out, and it was so successful that he went on to participate in two stage adaptations. The book dropped from sight in the 20th century, but the movie tie-in will certainly reestablish its virtually unique status as a work by an educated free man who managed to return from slavery. British director McQueen, whose striking first two features, Hunger and Shame, remained restricted to the art film world, paints on a much bigger canvas and with a much broader brush here, befitting a subject that defined the structure of American society before the Civil War. The nature of the outrage, villainy and human suffering on display is entirely genuine if also familiar, but it is never far removed from the direct experiences of Northup, who, near the beginning of his ordeal, decides, “I don’t want to survive, I want to live.”

Michael Fassbender: ‘I like that Magneto’s king of the nerds, because I’m a nerd too’

CELEBITCHY
August 27, 2013

I think I lost consciousness for a moment when I discovered this new Michael Fassbender interview. Aren’t you excited?! I’m excited. We haven’t had any new Fassbender interviews in months and months. Since Prometheus, right? And even then, Michael didn’t do a lot of press for that film. This year he’s got two big movies coming out. The Oscar-bait, awards-circuit Twelve Years a Slave, and the Ridley Scott thriller The Counselor. Fassy is scheduled to appear at the Toronto International Film Festival for 12 Years, and I suspect that The Counselor will have a more traditional marketing campaign, and maybe Fassy will even get a magazine cover of two for some November issue. Probably not American GQ… maybe Details or Interview. I wouldn’t hate it if he finally made the cover of Vanity Fair, but I think VF is all “if they have a pulse, we don’t want ‘em.”

Anyway, that was just a tangent. Because Fassy has already started doing press!! IT’S SO EXCITING. Although I love Benedict Cumberbatch, I’m ready to fly my Fass-loonie Freak Flag once again. Here’s the interview (it’s really cute).

Glamour: You get into drugs in The Counselor and play a slave owner in 12 Years a Slave. Why do you always pick such intense roles?
Michael Fassbender: I like when characters have layers. I’d actually love to do a comedy— characters in romantic comedies can have layers too. But I always try to pick roles that scare me.

Glamour: Is that why you were drawn to playing Magneto in X-Men?
MF: I like that Magneto’s sort of king of the nerds, because I’m a nerd too.

Glamour: You star alongside one of our future-of-Hollywood favorites, Quvenzhané Wallis, in 12 Years a Slave.
MF: Oh my God, I love that girl! I almost gave up acting after I saw Beasts of the Southern Wild, she’s so amazing.
