Top five movie characters from 2011 (Joe ie.)

From sweary Gardai to incredibly intelligent apes, 2011 has given us some of the best movie characters that we can recall in many a year. Here are our favourites.
5. Megan (Melissa McCarthy - Bridesmaids)

Despite being lazily labelled as the 'female Hangover', Bridesmaids was actually a lot funnier than The Hangover's disappointing sequel, mostly down to Melissa McCarthy's show-stealing turn.
Whether she's hitting on what might be an air marshal, saying of a tall partygoer that she would "climb him like a tree' or relieving herself in a sink, Melissa evidently had no problems debasing herself to whatever level the film required.

For that alone, she gets more laughs than the rest of the film's comediennes put together
.
4. "Rooster" Cogburn (Jeff Bridges - True Grit)

Not many people can fill the shoes left behind by Western legend John Wayne but Jeff Bridges had no qualms in taking on the role that gave 'The Duke' an Oscar. As "Rooster" Cogburn, Bridges gets to be heroic, drunk and even wear an eye patch - what's not to love?

3. Justin Bieber (Justin Bieber - Justin Bieber: Never Say Never 3D)

In a hilarious satire of teenage girls' preoccupation with saccharine-sweet role models and androgynous, hairless boys, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never 3D casts what appears to be a young Hilary Swank lookalike for its title star.

Much like Swank's role in Boys Don't Cry, the film's fictional pop star is actually a somewhat well-concealed female in disguise. Wait... what? We're being told that Justin Bieber is an actual person?!

2. Caesar (Andy Serkis - Rise of the Planet of the Apes)

There are motion capture performances, and there is Andy Serkis' motion capture performance of Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, with Serkis hotly-tipped for a possible Oscar nomination on the back of it.

With a tragic and ultimately uplifting story arc, it's a spellblinding mix of actor and CGI creation, making you wonder where Serkis ends and Caesar begins. Not to mention that the character has possibly the best first words ever uttered by any species.

1. Sergeant Gerry Boyle (Brendan Gleeson - The Guard)

A lot smarter and braver than he lets on, Brendan Gleeson's titular character from The Guard elevates the entire film, with some classic lines and a worthy reluctance to indulge in broad laughs.

There's a keen intelligence behind the eyes of Sergeant Gerry Boyle and the film leaves plenty of motivations and reactions open to interpretation, so repeat viewings are a must. Though Gleeson could retire tomorrow and leave behind an incredible legacy, we'd wager that it is this role for which he will be best remembered.
