Hugh Bonneville and his secret life (article from May that I found and thought was interesting) (Daily Mail)

Downton Abbey fans were mystified yesterday by an interview with actor Hugh Bonneville – tantalisingly titled My Secret Life – which appeared to reveal no secrets.

In it, Hugh, who plays the Earl of Grantham in the hit ITV1 period drama, chose to detail banal aspects of his life: how he wanted to be a town planner when he was young and the fact that his grey cashmere hoodie is his favourite item of clothing.

But those expecting him to unburden his soul or to deliver a juicy revelation were left sorely disappointed. ‘Doesn’t seem to give much away!’ wrote one fan on Twitter.
Normally Hugh, 47, never misses an opportunity to compliment his wife Lulu Evans, an artist, whom he met 14 years ago.

For instance he once told a newspaper that he hadn’t believed in ‘true love’ until they met. And elsewhere he has said: ‘I had girlfriends, but settling down was the last thing on my mind. Then you meet someone and think, “This is the person I want to be with”.

And praising Lulu again he said recently: ‘Oh, she’s got her head firmly screwed on.’
But in his latest interview he mentions only that Lulu drives a Volvo.
Hugh also says that his life was changed by the children’s book, Stig Of The Dump. ‘I identified with Barney, the boy who befriends a caveman he discovers in a quarry. It captured my imagination and I started writing plays based on their adventures.

‘Really terrible plays which I made my friends act in – they only had supporting parts, obviously.’

If he could change one thing about himself it would, he says, be to stop himself impulse-buying.

Judging by the response on Twitter, many of his fans, noting the title of the interview, were clearly expecting more.

Last night Hugh guest-starred in Doctor Who, playing a pirate captain whose ship is in peril from a beautiful siren – an event that made the gossip columns. ‘Where can they have drawn inspiration for such a role?’ asked one writer.

But then Hugh’s devotion to wife Lulu is so strong it is understood he is known to fellow thespians as the Ryan Giggs of the showbusiness world, after the famously family-orientated footballer.
