COLIN FIRTH: Rachel Weisz joins Skinny And Cat (INDEPENDENT)

The Oscar-winning actress has replaced Cate Blanchett - who has apparently left the project - to play famed photographer Margaret Bourke White in the love story, reported Showbiz 411.

Barbra Streisand had also been poised to direct the film, her first in 16 years, but has decided to pass on the job due to scheduling conflicts. Producers are now on the hunt for a new director to take over.

Colin Firth remains attached to play Margaret's husband, novelist Erskine Caldwell.

Skinny And Cat, which focuses on the couple's fiery romance and creative pairing, has been in development since 1982, when producer Linda Yellen wrote her first script.

Exclusive Update: Streisand Not Directing Cate Blanchett, Colin Firth or “Skinny and Cat” (SHOWBIZ 411)

EXCLUSIVE I told you ten months ago that Barbra Streisand would direct her first film in 16 years. It was called “Skinny and Cat.” Colin Firth and Cate Blanchett were all set to star in it. Alas, I am now told that “Skinny and Cat,” a love story about famed photographer Margaret Bourke White and novelist Erskine Caldwell, will proceed without Streisand. Blanchett is also gone, succeeded by Oscar winner Rachel Weisz (who actually resembles Bourke White). The financing is completely in place, and the producers are looking for a new director.
But the back story here is quite amazing, and a real Hollywood saga. This project has been kicking around since 1982, when producer Linda Yellen wrote her first script and spoke to Streisand about acting in the film. For years, sources say, like thirty, no one said a word about it. Then last year Streisand expressed interest in it as a director. Unfortunately, a new draft of “Skinny and Cat” was quite different than the one Streisand had last read.  Still, she was adamant about directing it.

In Hollywood, it’s all about scheduling. Even as Streisand felt committed to the cause, she had other projects like a world tour. (Not many directors are also international superstar performers.) Insiders say Streisand was unable to make meetings about the project last fall. In the meantime, Yellen set the movie up with producers Holly Wiersma and Logan Levy under their Lagniappe Films banner. That trio, not Streisand, owns the rights.
During the fall of 2012, when they were unable to secure Streisand in writing–couldn’t make a deal–the trio of Wiersma, Levy and Yellen brought on indie director Drake Doremus (“Like Crazy”). The producers, I’m told, offered Streisand a chance to be a producer on the film without the hassle of directing. Streisand’s reps said she would only do it if her contract read “producer for life.” She was still smarting, they say, from losing out on directing and producing “The Normal Heart” after being involved with it for 30 years.
The “Skinny” trio declined. I’m told what happened next was the threat of legal action against them from a litigator representing Streisand.

Barbra Streisand to Direct Colin Firth & Cate Blanchett in SKINNY AND CAT (TALK MOVIES WORLD)

Showbiz411 reports that Barbra Streisand is set to direct SKINNY AND CAT, an epic love story starring Colin Firth and Cate Blanchett. The film will mark the singer's first directorial project in 16 years.

SKINNY AND CAT follows the love affair between writer Erskine Caldwell and photojournalist Margaret Bourke White. Linda Yellen is producing from a script she wrote. The film will be independently financed and is scheduled to begin production in January of 2013.

Barbra Streisand to Direct First Film In 16 Years with Colin Firth and Cate Blanchett (SHOWBIZ 411)

Exclusive: Although it’s been alluded to, here’s the real story about Barbra Streisand’s return to directing. She’s agreed to direct “Skinny and Cat,” an epic love story about writer Erskine Caldwell and photojournalist Margaret Bourke White. Colin Firth and Cate Blanchett are officially attached, and Linda Yellen is producing from a script she wrote. Streisand is said to be very excited. Lynn Kressell is casting.

The film will be independently financed, with CAA putting together the package. The film has a go date for January 2013. Streisand last directed “The Mirror Has Two Faces” in 1996. It’s high time she was back behind the camera. There’s a reason Streisand was chosen to give Kathryn Bigelow her directing Oscar for “The Hurt Locker” a couple of years ago.

That’s because Barbra early bucked a system that resisted female directors. But once she caused a stir with “Yentl,” in 1983, the doors opened for Penny Marshall, Amy Heckerling, Nora Ephron, Betty Thomas, Susan Seidelman and all the ladies who followed them. Producer Yellen is a good partner for Streisand: she has a long string of quality credits including the landmark television movie, “Playing for Time.”

Bee Gee’s Robin Gibb Honored at Billboard Awards (THE GUARDIAN EXPRESS)

Robin Gibb of the Bee Gee’s has died at the age of 62 after battling colon and liver cancer. He may not be a Michael Jackson, or Paul Mccartney, however, Robin Gibb will be remembered by millions of fans as having one of the most remarkable soulful voices. Today we are left with his memory and a catalogue of music that is only second to Lennon and McCartney as the most successful songwriting unit in British popular music. The group wrote big hits for Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, Celine Dion, Dionne Warwick, Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross and others, along with their own number one hits.

Born in Manchester, England, in 1949, Gibb’s formed the Bee Gees with his brothers Barry and Maurice in 1958, embarking on a music career that would span six decades. During this period the brothers would release hits that included Stayin’ Alive, How Deep Is Your Love, How Can You Mend A Broken Heart, Massachusetts and Night Fever. Gibb sang lead on his first number one hit “Massachusetts”, when he was 17.

TOLDJA! Universal, Barbra Streisand And Joel Silver Tap Julian Fellowes To Script ‘Gypsy’

Last March, Deadline refuted a litany of web reports that Barbra Streisand’s dream to play the stage mother in Gypsy had died because Arthur Laurents no longer wanted the movie to get made. Deadline reported that Universal was making the deal and that producer Joel Silver was boarding the project. Today, Universal has announced it is moving forward with Oscar winning Gosford Park scribe Julian Fellowes. Here’s the official word:

LOS ANGELES, CA, March 13, 2012—Producers Barbra Streisand and Joel Silver have set Academy Award®-winning writer Julian Fellowes to pen the screenplay adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents’ Tony Award winning musical, Gypsy, which Ms. Streisand and Mr. Silver are currently developing for Universal Pictures. Ms. Streisand will portray “Momma Rose” in the new version, her first musical film since Yentl in which the Oscar®-winning actress and iconic singer starred, produced, co-wrote and directed in 1983.
