Brendan Gleeson: Domnhall Gleeson, a star in his own time

Julian Lennon. Paul Dalglish. Cameron Douglas. It’s never easy following in your father’s footsteps when dad happens to be really, really good at his job. How is it, then, that Domhnall Gleeson, son of Brendan, makes it look so damned easy? The sometime star of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and True Grit, has, aged 30, already been exposed to squillions of movie-going punters. In sheer bums-on-seats terms, he’s a huge star.

“But they’re not going for me,” he shrugs. “It doesn’t count. Even if I signed a Harry Potter thing I don’t think you’d get anything for my autograph on Ebay.”

What if Brendan added a Mad Eye Moody signature?

“Maybe two euro. At most. But by the time you add in postage and packaging. You know.”

He’s being modest. But any film-maker who has been lucky enough to direct Domhnall Gleeson will tell you that he’s as whip-smart as he is gifted. A versatile talent, the actor has effortlessly transitioned between Hollywood gigs and home turf. He’s appeared in sci-fi (Dredd), Tolstoy (Joe Wright’s Anna Karenina), alternate history (Never Let Me Go), political drama (Shadow Dancer) and one Irish sex comedy that we know of (Sensation). He has worked with the Coen Brothers, with Charlie Brooker (for the incoming Black Mirror) and with Lenny Abrahamson (on Frank). He has sidestepped with ease between media: he was nominated for a Tony for his work on the Broadway production of Martin McDonagh’s The Lieutenant of Inishmore and he took home an IFTA for playing Bob Geldof in the TV movie When Harvey Met Bob.

He has, as the varied CV attests, no plans to settle down in Tinseltown.

“I like that home is, erm, home,” he says. “I don’t really want to be too far away. And I hate driving. So LA definitely doesn’t suit me.”

The oldest of the four Gleeson brothers, Domhnall’s fate was sealed when he went to the IFTAs, aged 16, to pick up an award on behalf of his father. An agent, impressed by his amusing speech, came a-calling and, by 19, the youngster was appearing on London’s West End in The Lieutenant of Inishmore.

“I wanted to be a writer in my teens,” he says. “And when I got an agent I thought: ‘Oh great. Extra work. I might make a bit of money’. Then I read Martin McDonagh’s script and that changed everything. It was the funniest thing I had ever read. I thought it was a masterpiece. I still think so.”

Does he remember Brendan’s transition from teaching to professional acting?

“Yes and no. From early on, I remember dad coming home with strange haircuts. I remember him dyeing his hair black. I remember him doing a Garry Hynes play and looking really menacing for about a month. Which was weird. But I don’t remember the transition. And I often think about that now. Because my parents had four kids and it must have been an intensely worrying and anxious time for them. But it was completely hidden from us.”

And was it cool knowing that dad was touched by glitz and glamour?

“That never mattered to us at all. He was always still busy being a good dad and mam was always busy being a good mam. And that’s what I remember most.”

Fittingly, father and son will soon share screen time in Calvary, John Michael McDonagh’s dark good-priest-gone-bad drama.

“I haven’t got a huge amount to do in that,” explains Gleeson the Younger. “That’s my dad’s film. He is the centre of it. There are all these local people who are taking strips off him and we are all in orbit around him. I am only in it for one scene. But it did take us to different level of working together. And it’s another level for John. It feels very, very strong.”

Best Film Releases of 2012 (the Purple Revolver)

by Samantha Maine. Published Mon 26 Dec 2011 14:07

It’s been a year of sequels and prequels and no doubt, 2012 will be full of them too.

We at Purple Revolver take a look at some of the most exciting film releases we can look forward to for 2012.

The Avengers (May 4th)Captain America, Thor, Iron Man and The Hulk have all had their solo glory over the years and 2012 is the year they all come together for the first time on film.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon has taken the directorial reigns, which no doubt means there will be no special effect expense spared.

Starring Robert Downey Jr, Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson, comic-con regulars and film buffs will definitely be excited for this one.

Men in Black 3 (May 25th)More than a decade since the last Men in Black adventure, Will Smith once again throws on that infamous suit.

When the world is threatened by an evil alien, Agent Jay travels back in time to 1969, where he teams up with the younger Agent Kay to stop an evil villain named Boris (Jemaine Clement) from destroying the world in the future.

However cynical you are about sequels, you definitely won’t want to miss out on this one.

The Amazing Spider Man (July 3rd)British actor Andrew Garfield is the latest guy to take on Spidey. Going back to High School, Peter Parker once again struggles with his hormones, his spandex and err, his spidey senses.

Although it’s a little early for a prequel, Andrew has already been praised for his portrayal of the infamous hero and with Emma Stone playing the leading lady, these two will cement themselves as some of the best young actors of the year.

The Dark Knight Rises (July 20th)Christopher Nolan’s adaptations of billionaire Bruce Wayne have won fans and critics over. The Dark Knight Rises takes place eight years after The Dark Knight, and Batman faces new challenges in the form of brutal Bane and Catwoman.

Fans of the original comic are excited to see Bane as the baddy and if Tom Hardy’s portrayal of Bronson is anything to go by, he’s going to make an awesome villain!

Total Recall (August 3rd)1990 saw the first attempt at this Philip K. Dick classic and Arnie didn’t disappoint. It’s no wonder then, that movie fans are sceptical of yet another re-make.

Colin Farrell will be playing Douglas Quaid, which is an interesting and somewhat controversial choice. Jessica Biel will be playing Melina and stars Kate Beckingsale and Ethan Hawke also feature.

Unlike the original, the story all takes place on one planet. Only true sci-fi fans will be able to judge whether this will be a hit or a miss.

Expendables 2 (August 17th)
The plot is still firmly under Stallone’s biceps, but if the first film was anything to go by this’ll be an awesome treat of true 90’s style action.

The original cast of the first film all make an appearance including Arnie, Mickey Rourke and Bruce Willis. Expect explosions, over the top plots and plenty of brilliant one-liners.

Dredd (September 21st)Sylvestor Stallone first took on the role back in 1995 and the film itself was kind of so bad, that it was kind of good. Stallone was the perfect choice for Street judge, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot.

This time, Karl Urban takes on the character, with Pete Travis directing. They’ve got some big boots to fill but not too much to improve on!

The Hobbit (December 4th)J.R.R. Tolkien’s infamous story of how Bilbo Baggins came to find that ring has been screaming out at Hollywood ever since the success of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

It comes as no surprise then that Peter Jackson has taken the reigns once again to showcase this magical story.

British actor Martin Freeman is Bilbo, which has made many movie critics raise an eyebrow or two. This will be the first of two films for the story, so be sure to cement your seat in the front row!
