Peter Jackson responds to 'Hobbit' preview fallout BYBrent Lang (CHICAGO TRIBUNE)
LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Peter Jackson responded to criticism of his preview of "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" at CinemaCon this week, saying that audiences will eventually "settle into" the hyper-realistic look of the film shot at a higher frame rate.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the director acknowledged that some did not care for the look of the film at the rate of 48 frames per second, rather than the standard 24.
"I can't say anything, just like I can't say anything to someone who doesn't like fish," he said. "You can't explain why fish tastes great and why they should enjoy it." "A couple of the more negative commenters from CinemaCon said that in the Gollum and Bilbo scene they didn't mind it and got used to that," Jackson said. "That was the same 48 frames the rest of the reel was. I just wonder if it they were getting into the dialogue, the characters and the story. That's what happens in the movie. You settle into it."
A New Line executive told TheWrap that there had been debate at the studio about whether or not to screen the high frame rate footage in its unfinished form, but Jackson had pushed for the preview and prevailed. The individual said that any problems will likely be fixed once the color is corrected and the special effects are finalized.
Jackson opted to shoot the prequel to his "Lord of the Rings" trilogy at 48 frames per second rather than the standard 24 frames, because he claims it will improve the film's 3D imagery and better immerse audiences in the action. But the 10-minute extended look at the fantasy was easily the most divisive event at the exhibitor trade show, with many theater owners and members of the media complaining that the effect was similar to a telenovela or a filmed stage play.

Smaug In 'The Hobbit' Will Be 'Extraordinary' (MTV)
'It's still a very secret character that is very closely safeguarded, and it's still in the design process,' Andy Serkis says at Golden Globes.
When Serkis took some time to chat with MTV News' Josh Horowitz, he refused to give any clue what the legendary dragon Smaug might look like on the big screen. "I can't give any secrets away, none of those trade secrets," Serkis said. "I can't say that because actually it's still under wraps."
In "The Hobbit," Serkis reprises the role that made him a capture-performance all-star: Gollum. Additionally, he will step behind the camera as the director of the films' second unit.
An iconic character in J.R.R. Tolkien's mythological world, Smaug is the impetus for all of the action in Peter Jackson's upcoming "Lord of the Rings" prequel, "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey." Such a revered character is bound to come with a high level of security.
Serkis suggested that there might be more to his own secrecy than just avoiding spoilers. According to the actor, Weta Workshop is still working on the creature's look. "It's still a very secret character that is very closely safeguarded, and it's still in the design process," he said.
The little we do know about Smaug is more than enough to get us excited. Benedict Cumberbatch will voice Smaug in "The Hobbit" before going where no man has gone before as the villain in J.J. Abrams' next "Star Trek."
Serkis said that with Cumberbatch as Smaug, audiences certainly have something to look forward to. "With an actor like Benedict Cumberbatch playing him, it will be extraordinary," he said.

Motion-capture wizard Andy Serkis took some time off from filming "The Hobbit" to hit the red carpet at the 2012 Golden Globes, but it seems like he left all of his precious Middle-earth secrets back in New Zealand.
When Serkis took some time to chat with MTV News' Josh Horowitz, he refused to give any clue what the legendary dragon Smaug might look like on the big screen. "I can't give any secrets away, none of those trade secrets," Serkis said. "I can't say that because actually it's still under wraps."

Andy Serkis (Gollum) gives clues about his precious Hobbit
Hopefully by now you've all seen The Hobbit production diaries. If you haven't, suffice to say Peter Jackson's adaptation looks to be shaping up quite nicely. The latest one (available via Peter Jackson's Facebook page) describes the film's innovative cameras, the Red One Epic, which shoots in 5K resolution at 48 frames a second -- in 3D no less. What does that mean for cinema as a whole? Who knows. But it could be a serious game changer, even more so than James Cameron's Avatar was back in 2009.
With all this anticipation for The Hobbit, surely a teaser trailer should be dropping soon. After all, it was about one year ahead of Fellowship that we got that first teaser, and it was a doozy. IGN recently got to chat with Gollum himself, actor/motion-capture performer Andy Serkis, and we asked him that very question. His response? "There will be a trailer fairly soon, actually. Around Christmas time, I believe."
If that's the case, there are two likely candidates for where that teaser might run– Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, opening December 16th, almost one year to the day from The Hobbit's first release. Or -- the more likely scenario -- it will appear in front of Steven Spielberg's The Adventures of Tintin, a film produced by Peter Jackson that co-stars Andy Serkis and opens December 21st. While the decorated actor, who's hoping to nab an Oscar nod for his work on this year's Rise of the Planet of the Apes, was not sure of which film it would be attached to, he was confident we'd see one very, very soon. "It's just around the corner," he gleefully noted with a laugh.
We also got to ask him about is work as Second Unit Director on The Hobbit, a gig he hopes will lead to future directing work in the future. "It's quite fascinating," he said. "I'm having a ball. It's a huge operation, really. We're on the road at the moment, at various different locations on South Island in New Zealand. There are some truly remarkable landscapes that we're filming in. It's just stunning."
Serkis also added a bit about shooting in 5K at 48 frames. "It's unlike anything I have ever seen before," he explained. "The brain has become so attuned to watching films at 24 frames a second. This is something completely different. It's incredible. You feel inside it and surrounded by it. It's really great. People will not be disappointed."
Somehow, I doubt they will be. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey arrives December 14th, 2012.
