Inspired by his new wife, Paul McCartney takes on the Great American Songbook. The result? VINTAGE MACCA

By Adrian Thrills
There's nothing an old Beatle likes more than the warm glow of nostalgia.

When he toured the UK before Christmas, Paul McCartney played no fewer than 26 Fab Four songs in a three-hour show that was a magical celebration of shared memories.

This collection from Sir Paul goes back even further. An intensely personal trip through U.S. classics of the Thirties, Forties and Fifties, it is his first account of what he calls ‘the songs that inspired the songs’.

Before he hooked up with John, George and Ringo, a young McCartney was exposed to American greats such as Harold Arlen and Irving Berlin by his father Jim, a trumpeter who fronted his own jazz combo.

‘My dad used to play the piano at home, so I heard all these songs from him,’ says Sir Paul.

‘On New Year’s Eve, they’d roll back the carpet and all the ladies would sit around, sipping rum and blackcurrant. After half-an-hour, they’d all start singing, so I associate these songs with good times.

'Stevie Wonder Is A Genius', Says Sir Paul McCartney (Steroboard.com)

'Stevie Wonder Is A Genius', Says Sir Paul McCartney

Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney has told of his praise for Stevie Wonder, after the pair recorded a song together – 30 years after they worked together on hit single ‘Ebony and Ivory’.

The pair have bashed out a new track for McCartney’s new album ‘Kisses on the Bottom’, his 15th solo record which is set to hit shelves on February 6th. The new track, entitled ‘Only Our Hearts’, is only of only two tracks actually written by McCartney, but he enlisted the help of legendary singer and pianist Stevie Wonder – who McCartney described as a ‘genius’.

Speaking of the collaboration, Macca said: “Stevie came along to the studio in LA and he listened to the track for about ten minutes and he totally got it. He just went to the mic and within 20 minutes had nailed this dynamite solo. When you listen you just think, 'How do you come up with that?' But it's just because he is a genius, that's why.”

Paul McCartney: Read Highlights from This Morning's Paul McCartney Webcast (Paste Magazine)

By Kristen Blanton

On big events this year:
McCartney: If there is something they want me to do, they tend to dictate it rather than me. I’d like to be doing something, though I won’t know until our meeting tomorrow
.

On the album’s sweet spot:
McCartney: When I came in, I didn’t know how to do it. We’re in Capitol Studios, iconic to Nat King Cole and Sinatra… all these guys recorded here. I found it a little bit intimidating. We chose a song, very organically. Didn’t make it too stiff. I was using a big voice, “Heaven, I’m in heaven” (he starts singing very loudly), it made me feel very uncomfortable.

So what was the key?
McCartney: Channeling Fred Astaire. If you listen careful, you’ll hear Fred Astaire. I decided to use this littler voice. I’m not very good about it. That’s what we wanted to do, get in the room. We’d say, what song do you want to do? We’d pull up chords and lyrics. Tony (producer) sat in the room, usually they’re not in the actual room, but he was. It became more intimate. Also, figure it out. Kick it around and then record it. Then what you get is something really fresh. I think that’s why I had so much fun doing it. It was just made up on the spot. No preconceived ideas. I think we all felt we contributed.

On his favorite song on the new album:
McCartney: I think probably “My Valentine” because it’s kind of the newest for me. I really had a lot of fun with Eric doing the solo on it. Again, he just came up with the solo. (whistles tune) I like that. Of the old songs I also love “Bye Bye Blackbird” because normally you get (begins singing) but Tommy’s idea was to slow it right down, which I was a bit dubious about at first, but I think it works. It was very similar to how The Beatles worked. Bring it in, kick it around, and record it. The fact I was working with great jazz musicians, it’s really cool to just say to the guys, ‘let’s just go from the bass,” and the guy’s an unbelievable player, so he knows exactly what to play, which really worked.

On being an idol
McCartney: It’s very strange indeed. Really, I’m just a kid from Liverpool still. It’s great, you know I supposed you want to be the best you can be in anything. When you get there, you can’t say you don’t want to be that. It’s a reflection of what people think you did well. You have to kind of accept it and thank them.

On becoming one of rock’s elder statesmen
McCartney: That’s the perspective of youth, you know? We thought 30 was really old. Now I think it’s amazingly young. The guys who came out of college at 24, we felt sorry for them. But they’re so young. I must admit, I didn’t expect to be singing and playing at the level I am now. It keeps things interesting. We were in South America last year and the crowds were amazing, the best. You come out to that, and it’s hard to say no to that… even though I am over 30. I always say at the end of all my concerts, “See ya next time.” And I mean it. I’ll do it until they let me.

Paul McCartney will chat with fans live and talk about his new album, Kisses on the Bottom, during a live webcast on his website. (She Knows Entertainment)

Paul McCartney Webcast Thursday

Paul McCartney webcast scheduled for Thursday

Listen up, Paul McCartney fans! The Beatles legend is set to participate in a live web stream on his official website Thursday, Jan. 19 at 11 a.m. EST to celebrate the upcoming release of his new album, Kisses on the Bottom.

What's better? Submit your questions to kissesonthebottom@paulmccartney.com and he just might answer your question during the webcast.

The newly married superstar is set to release his new album on Feb. 7. With guest appearances by Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder, Kisses on the Bottom is a tribute to some of Macca's favorite songs. He also recorded two new songs for the album, including lead single "My Valentine."

"Scores of fans then streamed the new original track "My Valentine," many assuming it would be the new record's title track. While a few Twitter hints have been dropped and rumors have run rampant, Paul puts an end to speculation today, confirming that the album will indeed be titled Kisses On The Bottom," his label said when announcing the new album title.

The new album shows that the legendary singer is still way into music, but he's reportedly thought about switching up his career path recently.

"I would really love to start up a sightseeing business," McCartney told the U.K. Star. Where would he open the business? In The Beatles' hometown of Liverpool, of course.

Paul McCartney’s “Kisses on the Bottom” Not as Gross as it Sounds! (Waleg)

When I read the title of Paul McCartney’s latest album I thought it was gross! Couldn’t he think of any other title than “Kisses on the Bottom?” Yup that is the title. Are you grossed out too? It seems there’s no need to be because the origin of that title is actually wholesome!

McCartney himself explained in his website that it’s from the song made famous by Fats Waller in 1935 “I’m Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Love Letter.” Some of the song’s lines go like this “I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter and make believe it came from you; I'm gonna write words oh so sweet. They're gonna knock me off of my feet. A lot of kisses on the bottom, I'll be glad I got 'em.” Now are you convinced the title’s not gross?
“Kisses on the Bottom” is the first album where McCartney doesn’t play any instrument at all! Instead he’s backed by Diana Krall’s band. Music greats like Stevie Wonder and Eric Clapton also appear in the album. His latest album has been around you know. It was recorded in three cities: Los Angeles, New York and London with producers Tommy LiPuma and Diana Krall backing it up.

Excited to hear what’s inside? “Kisses on the Bottom” contains 14 hits including 2 original songs “My Valentine” and “Only Our Hearts.” If you opt for the deluxe CD you can have two extra cuts and a download of the Capitol Studios show.

Paul McCartney’s new album will be in stores starting February 7. So, are you ready for some “Kisses on the Bottom?”
