Ringo Starr turns 72 in Nashville with peace, love Updated at 08:22 AM today (ABC)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The 1960s mop top is gone, but Ringo Starr is still flashing a peace sign.

The former Beatle marked his 72nd birthday in Nashville Saturday by holding a "peace and love" moment at noon. He asked people worldwide to do the same at 12 o'clock in their time zones.

The idea came to him in 2008 when an interviewer asked him what he wanted for his birthday. Since then, he has held events each year in cities such as New York, Chicago and Hamburg, Germany.

"It's sort of catching on more and more, the more we do," Starr said before the festivities. "We got lots of blogs from Japan and China and all over the world saying, `We did peace and love.' So it's working."

Hundreds of fans joined Starr at Hard Rock CafΘ, shouting "peace and love" at the magic hour and holding two fingers in the air. The crowd sang "happy birthday" and the chorus of "Give Peace A Chance." One fan held up a sign declaring the last time she saw Starr in person. He pointed to her and joked, "I hugged this woman in 1964, and she still can't get over it."

Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band superlative for sold out Ruth Eckerd audience (EXAMINER) Ray Shasho Bradenton Classic Rock Music Examiner

Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band performed a magnificent show on Sunday evening at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, Florida. Every classic tune on the band’s setlist was played to its perfection and accompanied by a rousing standing ovation. The band appeared and sounded like a finely tuned racing machine, with engines revved and in immaculate condition. The 2012 All-Star lineup may be the best group of correlated musicians yet.

The band began to play and the crowd rose to its feet while Ringo Starr glided on stage to take his spot behind the microphone for the opening number, “Matchbox” (#17 Billboard Hit in 1964) a rockabilly Carl Perkins penned tune covered by The Beatles.

Throughout the evening well-wishers acknowledged Ringo’s upcoming birthday on July 7th. Ringo will be turning 72 but looked remarkably fit and ageless on stage. Starr taunted the Ruth Eckerd audience by telling them not to wish him a happy birthday unless they were going to give him a gift. Near the end of the evening someone actually did give him a gift, and he ran backstage with it after the show.

On That Note: Ringo Starr, ‘a distinctive musician,’ embarking on 13th tour By Ed Condran Special to The Mercury

When Ringo Starr’s publicist noted that the former Beatles drummer was up for a one-on-one interview, it was a little surprising. In the past, Starr has opted for press conferences.

It was understandable since no matter what anyone would say about Starr, he was a Beatle, arguably (it’s not a difficult argument) the greatest rock and roll band in pop music history. There were only four Beatles and just two are alive.

Paul McCartney has more rules than hits. He’s about as approachable as a super model. Forget interviews. And there is kind, easy-going humorous Ringo, who doesn’t receive the respect he deserves.

About a decade ago, during an interview with the fifth Beatle (apologies to Billy Preston), Fabs producer George Martin, was asked whether he felt guilty not cultivating the songwriting talent of George Harrison and Starr. “No, I was too busy working with the two greatest songwriters of the century,” Martin said.
